SEASONAL VEG IN DECEMBER
The Christmas cover is always
quite a challenge. In
our first year, before Neil
Gower came on board, we
commissioned Amy Williams
to paint a portrait of
a turkey, looking atcha. Last
year we asked Neil to design
us up some Lewes wrapping
paper, and we created a
torn-off bit in the corner, to
make it look like the magazine
was a present which had
just come through your letterbox.
This time we’ve gone
for a more romantic view of
the festive season: a view up
early-morning Keere Street,
LEWES STREET NAMES #5
as the postman goes about
his rounds. Don’t forget
that, until December 17th,
Neil’s wonderful artwork
will be on display in Pelham
House: not just his previous
covers for Viva Lewes, but
also commissions he’s had
from the likes of Conde Nast
and Faber & Faber, too. You
can also buy replica A4-plus
prints of Neil’s previous Viva
Lewes covers on canvas, for
as little as £30 each. Neil has
a website, www.neilgower.
co.uk, which is well worth
checking out.
LS Davey, in his excellent book ‘The Street Names of Lewes’
dispels the myth that Fisher Street was so named because it
was the site of the market for the fish brought over by the
‘Juggs’ (fisherwomen) from Brighton in early medieval days.
It is much more likely to have been named after William
Fyssher, a local landowner in the 14th century – the name
was recorded in deeds as early as 1383.
Brussels sprouts; red, green, white and savoy cabbages; cauliflower; celeriac; celery; Jerusalem artichokes; leeks; parsn
Cook of the Farmers’ Market and to the producers who help her compile this list. There are two markets in Decemb
pick it up at the second.
