Brooklyn has the reputation of being the
cheaper version of Manhattan with a trendy
crowd complete with hipsters and for the
most part this would be true, especially if
you plan on exploring the area of
Williamsburg. The L subway train would
be your most direct route to this area.
The first stop Brooklyn bound on the L
train is Bedford Avenue and Williamsburg
in particular extends out to the Lorimer and
Graham Ave stops. It is here that you can
find some interesting bars and places to
meet unique individuals. Make sure to be
21 however because few bars will admit
you if you are underage.
Most nights in a Brooklyn bar will consist
of the basic essentials that one might
find right here in Poughkeepsie, however,
the trip to the city is well worth it if your
interested in up and coming bands, later
closing times, and an eclectic mix of people.
The streets of Williamsburg are often
crowded with vendors selling used records,
vintage clothing and various other odds and
ends and most people will stop to talk to
you if you are willing to let them. The art-
work in this area flows from the walls of
the building to the very sidewalks you venture
down. It is something to be experienced.
In many ways the live music is the best
part of the bar scene. I recently went to
go see a friend’s band (Predator Rawcheck
them out!) at a small bar located in
Bushwick. Bushwick is an up and coming
neighborhood in Brooklyn located just outside
Williamsburg. Some locals to the area
have said Williamsburg is merging into
Bushwick in many ways such as music/
art culture.
The room was dimly lit and decorated
by home made art in the form of mannequins,
sketches and oddly shaped paintings.
The air reeked of cigarette smoke
and other odd aromas and there was a
small bar manned by a guy in white crocodile
shoes and a bow tie. Although it took
half the night for the bands to get on stage
it was well worth the wait.
One bar that I have enjoyed going to
that is well know for hosting local city
bands is The Charleston located at 174
By Melissa Amarianos
Bedford Ave. A unique feature of this bar
is that it offers free bar pizzas with the purchase
of a drink (21 and older). This bar is
unique because it has a good amount of
open space. They have shows in the basement
mostly supporting local artists and the
crowd is usually young depending on who
is playing on a particular night.
Another bar which is probably the most
famous in the area is the Brooklyn Brewery
-79 North 11th Street, which has a happy
hour from 6-11pm. The Brewery is unique
because as you may have guessed they
brew their own beer! Brews like Monster
Ale and Brooklyn Brown are made there
and they offer free hourly tours on Saturdays
from 12-5pm.
After a long night out if you didn’t fill
up on bar pizza you can swing over to
Kellogg’s Diner located at 514 Metropolitan
Ave. This spot offers great food at relatively
inexpensive prices and the best part
is its open late! There are so many bars in
Brooklyn that it is impossible to write about
them all but hopefully you will take a trip
soon.
