THE HISTORY OF 

BLOWING ROCK 

N O R T H C A R O L I N A 

“This is a most treacherous 

place, with very few assets 

to boast. Steep cliffs, heavy 

growth that is almost 

impossible to penetrate, 

temperatures so cold it 

freezes to every limb and 

stalk, and the wind, oh, that 

treacherous wind. To call 

this a rugged place would 

truly be an understatement 

for it is fit for no man. 

It does, however, have a 

magnificent view, and while 

enchanting to see, brings 

nothing from which to 

make a living.” 

- Bishop August Spangenberg - 

December 3, 1752

This is the impression Bishop Spangenberg had as 

he and a team of explorers set out from Bethlehem, 

Pennsylvania to Edenton, North Carolina to locate lands 

bought the year before from the Earl of Granville for a 

Moravian settlement. The good Bishop left Bethlehem in 

September accompanied by Henry Antes, John Merk, 

Herman Lash and Timothy Horsefield. Joining their party 

were Henry Day and Andrew Lambert and John Rhodes, 

all employed as guides. Lash and Lambert had lived in 

the foothills of North Carolina and were familiar with this 

section of North Carolina. 

However, after they crossed the Virginia line and 

made their way into North Carolina, they missed the trail 

that would follow an eastern route in the direction of 

Edenton. 

Instead, the explorers headed west, into the Blue 

Ridge Mountains and before they realized their mistake, 

winter had set in and there was only one alternative– 

keep moving west until shelter could be found. 

It was while the party was camped in the Globe Valley 

that Bishop Spangenberg made the notation in his diary.

The next day, and with 

the winter pounding the 

mountains even fiercer than 

the day before, the explorers 

moved on up the mountainside, 

again camping just south 

of Blowing Rock where a large 

mountain blocked the wind 

from their camp site. Again 

that evening, Bishop 

Spangenburg made another entry into his diary... 

“Our guide we hired to show us the way to the Yadkin, 

missed the right path, and we came into a region from 

which there was no outlet, except by climbing up an 

indescribably steep mountain. Part of the way we had to 

crawl on hands and feet; sometimes we had to take the 

baggage and saddles and the horses and drag them up the 

mountain (for the horses were in danger of falling down 

backward– as we had once had an experience), and 

sometimes we had to pull the horses up while they trembled 

and quivered like leaves. 

Arrived at the top at last, we see hundreds of mountain 

peaks all around us, presenting a spectacle like ocean waves 

in a storm. We refreshed ourselves a little on the mountain 

top, and then began the descent, which was neither so steep 

nor as deep as before, and then we came to a stream of 

water. Oh, how refreshing this water was to us.” 

It wasn’t until he reached what is now the village of Blowing 

Rock, that his thoughts began to change what he had earlier 

described as “a rugged land not fit for man.” 

The next entry in his diary read... 

“Here on the mountain the Lord brought us to a 

delicious spring and good pasture on a chestnut ridge. 

He sent us, also, at this juncture two deer, which were most 

acceptable additions to our larder. Since arriving on the 

summit of the mountain we have found an enchanting 

place, rich in potential for farming, logging and hunting. 

There is suitable land for raising wheat, corn, oats, barley 

and hemp, and excellent opportunities for milling and for 

collecting building materials from giant chestnut trees that 

dominate the woodlands.”

Blowing Rock is now North 

Carolina’s premiere resort vacation destination. Farms have 

yielded to beautiful mountain homes– some seasonal, some the 

year-round. Stables and blacksmithing have yielded to quaint 

unique shops, and gardens of vegetables have been replaced by 

motels, inns and resort hotels. 

Yet, the village is surrounded with gardens and farms and 

while the chestnut trees have fallen victim to the blight, the 

woodlands are rich in wildlife, protected by national and state 

forestry rules and regulations. 

Today our visitors don’t 

have to experience the same 

traveling obstacles that Bishop 

Spangenberg did back in 

1752. The village is accessible 

by modern highways that are 

continuing to be improved to 

accommodate the growing 

traffic. The conversion of the 

“Land of the Cherokee” to 

the “North Carolina High 

Country” has taken place and 

few will disagree that Blowing 

Rock is the crown jewel of the 

North Carolina High Country. 

The fact that Blowing 

Rock is a very special place is 

confirmed by the thousands 

who come to the mountains 

to enjoy a lifestyle far removed from the glitter, bright lights and 

chaotic atmospheres of city life. For the last century Blowing Rock 

has accommodated those seeking a respite and a quality of life

that many resort communities 

have lost due to uncontrolled 

growth. 

So valued are our visitors 

and seasonal residents that 

the town’s economy is 100% 

tourism, and it is the passion 

for keeping the village charm 

and character that drives the 

engine that keeps Blowing 

Rock one of the south’s greatest vacation destinations. 

The charm and lifestyle of Blowing Rock has remained a 

priority for the partnership between those who live here, those 

that come for the season, or those that come for just a day or two 

or a weekend. All have proven to be very protective of the town 

that many feel is the closest thing to a Norman Rockwell’s 

painting to be found in America. 

Prior to Bishop Spangenberg’s visit in 1752, this was the land 

of the mighty Cherokee and as they moved west, the white man 

arrived to take their place. These were rough and rugged people 

who experienced hardships that ranged from getting to the 

summit of the mountain to 

surviving on what they could 

grow and harvest. 

No doubt the legendary 

Dan’l Boone hunted and 

explored in and around what 

is now Blowing Rock, and 

that fact is confirmed by a 

historic marker that is in place 

on Main Street in the heart of 

the village. 

Prior to incorporation in 1889, the community was a village 

of farms with only a few general stores and a blacksmith’s shop to 

provide the needs of the settlers. The village people had to deal 

with chickens, hogs, cows, goats, sheep and horses– all of which 

had the run of the town. It wasn’t until a young physician came 

to visit that the people living amid all the squalor learned about 

diseases that would destroy the settlement unless they dealt with 

more sanitary methods. The doctor convinced them that livestock

should be fenced, and outhouses 

needed to be built in 

locations where runoff would 

not infect gardens and lawns. 

As it became more and 

more evident that North 

Carolina was going to be 

caught up in the War Between 

the States, those who could 

afford it dispatched their 

loved ones to the safest place 

they could think of– the 

rugged mountains of Western 

North Carolina, an area not 

affected by the battles and 

violence taking place from the 

foothills to the coast. 

It certainly can be said of 

Blowing Rock that the Civil 

War indeed did pit brother against brother, and friend against 

friend in many instances, but for the most part any violence in the 

mountains here were classified as skirmishes instead of battles. It 

wasn’t until the war was nearly over that the Northern army, as 

part of Stoneman’s raid through the South, was dealt its most 

significant damage. A commander under General Stoneman led a 

band of raiders that passed through what is now Blowing Rock, 

threatening anyone in their path, and actually burning a local 

home to the ground because 

they felt the owner was not 

loyal to the North. 

Prior to the War Between 

the States, the Blowing Rock 

area consisted of mostly farms 

separated by creeks and 

mountain ridges where small 

pockets of families lived on 

what they produced from the 

land. It wasn’t until the Civil War that Blowing Rock became a 

destination for those that were looking for a safe refuge from the 

skirmishes in the lowlands, or as a respite from the heat in the 

lower elevations of the Piedmont.

Joined by others who 

came from as far away as 

Florida to beat the heat, it 

soon became apparent that to 

accommodate these visitors, 

some changes must be made. 

Gradually farm land became 

boarding houses, the 

settlement’s two general 

stores began adding items 

that one would expect to find only in larger cities, and for the first 

time the vocabulary of the mountain folk began including such 

terms as tourist, real estate, and horseless carriages. 

The conversion went into high gear when a group of 

influential citizens asked the General Assembly in Raleigh to 

award a charter to the growing settlement that would be included 

on the maps as Blowing Rock. That happened on March 11, 1889. 

After the war, many 

families continued coming 

to Blowing Rock during the 

summer months, escaping 

the sweltering heat off the 

mountain. Hundreds built 

seasonal homes here, and 

by the time Blowing Rock 

received its charter those 

“summer” homes were 

sharing the landscape with a number of boarding houses, inns 

and hotels. By the turn of the century most every farm had 

disappeared to make room for the elements that would define 

and provide the resources of a prospering village. 

Those that directed and 

guided the development of 

the town during those first 

years of its life were special 

people who understood that 

to destroy the landscape 

would be to destroy the 

livelihood of an economy that 

was driven by tourism and 

seasonal home owners.

When, in March of 1989 the village celebrated its centennial 

the theme of “Proud of the Past– Poised for the Future” was 

adopted for the year-long celebration. That theme remains as an 

important priority among village leaders to this day. 

It wasn’t until winter 

sports came to the High 

Country that Blowing Rock 

went from a summer resort to 

a year-round destination for 

visitors– even then, it didn’t 

happen overnight. Those 

coming to Blowing Rock to 

enjoy winter sports found 

many store windows boarded 

up, limited accommodations, only a couple of restaurants, a gas 

station, pharmacy and a soda shop open. The season for the 

great majority of downtown shops, restaurants and overnight 

accommodations was from June to August. 

As the popularity of 

winter sports grew and with tremendous advancements in 

snowmaking capability, the addition of snowboarding, ice skating, 

and special promotions geared to generate interest in coming to 

the mountains between Labor Day and Memorial Day, the 

atmosphere of the village changed dramatically. No longer 

considered a summer resort, Blowing Rock became a destination 

for thousands, and in short order, shops, restaurants and motels, 

hotels and inns remained open year-round, and the atmosphere 

of Main Street changed from only a spotting of cars from out of 

town, to a scene as busy as summer or autumn. From the first 

snowfall of winter to the blooming of flowers during the spring, 

Blowing Rock today is alive and vibrant, and the definition of 

Blowing Rock as only a summer resort is gone forever, replaced 

with an international reputation as a year-round vacation 

destination.

THINGS TO DO 

A ribbon of pavement that snaked its way from the 

Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smokies, 

the Blue Ridge Parkway opened vistas and landscape previously 

inaccessible to locals and visitors. The June through August 

“season” became a May through October “season,” as the 

opportunity to drive directly through some of the most beautiful 

backdrops for autumn color in the world made the “color season” 

a prime economic force that kept shops and stores, 

as well as tourist accommodations busy 

for two additional months. 

With a creative imagination and 

a daring challenge, skiing also came 

to the south in the 1960s and with its 

success came another extension of the 

season and an opportunity to further 

improve Blowing Rock’s only economy– 

a tourism-driven economy.

As the “tourism season” 

expanded, so did Blowing 

Rock’s lifestyle. Instead of 

boarded up store fronts and 

sidewalks that were rolled up 

by Labor Day, more and more 

of the businesses stayed open 

year-round. With the area 

becoming a primary destination 

with year-round recreation and 

vacation facilities, it wasn’t long 

before the village expanded with 

new businesses and services. 

Joining the landscape and 

attractions was a rich inventory 

of cultural resources, from 

masterpieces in art to world premieres in theatre, and from 

New York Times Best Selling authors to training facilities for 

world class athletes. 

Across the nation the theme most heard among vacationers is 

“heritage tourism”– identifying historic and cultural resources that 

expose the traveler to the rich culture that is our heritage. While 

most resort destinations can offer private recreational facilities, 

beaches and other amenities, how many vacation destinations can 

offer the historical attractions that have been enhanced for the 

visitor experience– all in the 

immediate Blowing Rock 

area. From million year old 

Grandfather Mountain’s 

Mile-High Swinging Bridge, 

nature preserve, museum, 

animal habitat and a nonprofit 

international biosphere 

to Tweetsie Railroad, a

estored narrow 

gauge steam 

locomotive that was 

a vital working part of 

the region’s early lifestyle. 

An amazing rock formation, 

from which the town takes 

its name and where the lore 

of Indian legend is rooted 

deep in the culture of the 

mountains to the first federal 

scenic highway in the world– 

the beautiful Blue Ridge 

Parkway, few areas in the 

world can compare to what 

Blowing Rock can offer in the 

area of heritage tourism. 

Compliment that with a world class performing art 

center and the resources at nearby Appalachian State 

University and its innovative Appalachian Summer 

month-long cultural presentations all provide a host 

of other opportunities in and around the village. 

While Blowing Rock has an abundance of 

attractions, its longest running draw for the vacationer may 

be found in the elements that have been here since the first 

vacationer ever set foot on mountain soil. Fishing, hiking, 

camping, picnicking, biking, rafting, sightseeing, shopping– 

Blowing Rock is in the center of it all. Add to that an impressive 

list of sports, from the first ski facility in the entire south at 

Appalachian Ski Mountain, to the oldest continuous horse show 

in the United States.

tiny Norman Rockwell village of Blowing Rock that eating and 

sleeping is just a way to rest between events and activities.

Shopping in Blowing 

Rock has two very important 

ingredients in its makeup. 

You can buy a diamond or an 

oriental rug for thousands or 

you can buy a handcrafted 

toy, art object, or souvenir 

for mere dollars. Another 

feature is the availability of 

both worlds– world class 

shops downtown or outlet 

shops at an equally world 

class customer friendly

mall. Shopping in Blowing 

Rock has always been a 

favorite pastime because of 

the unique make up of is 

business district. During the 

fifties, when Montaldos, 

Kairallahs and Razooks were 

among the most famous 

fashion houses in America, 

the people who came to 

Blowing Rock wanted to experience shopping in one of the 

south’s great resort communities and were just as intent on saving 

the bag with the store name to share with their friends back home 

as they were with the items they purchased. During the 1950s 

and well into the 1970s a popular part of the downtown shopping 

area were the auction houses, famous for their live “shows” both 

in the mornings and every night. Diamonds, paintings from the 

great masters, estate items, oriental carpets, fine china, silver and 

gold objects of art, bronzes, and more drew full houses every 

night. Seldom were the occasions when a police officer didn’t have 

to remind observers that they were impeding traffic, blocking the 

Main Street right-of-way. Shopping in Blowing Rock was and 

continues to this day to be very special.

• Renowned artist Elliott Daingerfield discovered Blowing Rock and began to 

summer here. Before he built his first home, he stayed at The Fair View House 

operated by Mrs. Brady, near the Blowing Rock Hotel. Here he offered art 

classes to the summer population until he built his first home/studio across 

from the Episcopal Church. 

• Dr. Mary Cabell Warfield was Blowing Rock’s only doctor from 1930-1946. 

Dr. Warfield often took ailing children into her home to heal them since no 

hospital existed at the time. Dr. Warfield was a cousin to Wallis Warfield 

Simpson, Duchess of Windsor. 

• The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, which began in 1923, is the oldest 

continuously running horse show in the country. While many sporting events 

were suspended during the war years, the Horse Show continued. 

• Elliott Daingerfield’s “Westglow,” now an elegant spa, was completed in 1917 

by architect and contractor J. Lee Hayes. 

• “Little Miss Sure Shot”, better known as the legendary Annie Oakley, a famous 

marks-woman from Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, taught marksmanship at the 

Mayview Manor Gun Club in the 1920 and 30s. 

• Blowing Rock has been the destination for many famous people looking for a 

quiet and inspirational home to do their work. Margaret Mitchell wrote much of 

Gone With The Wind in Blowing Rock, and Pearl S. Buck was a long-time summer 

resident who did most of her writing at a home on Buxton Road. Hotels and 

summer homes have also hosted presidents, actors, authors, artists and other 

famous folks from Franklin Roosevelt to Tom Hanks. 

• The Blowing Rock, North Carolina’s oldest travel attraction, has drawn visitors 

since the late 1800’s. By the mid-30’s a gift shop and soda fountain were added 

and in 1938 the stone gift shop was constructed. Ripley’s “Believe It or Not” 

notes that the Blowing Rock is the only location “where it snows upside-down.”

Throughout the year, a trip to Blowing Rock and the High Country can keep

events. Ski the slopes, bike the mountain roads, tee off on golf courses where

FUN FACTS TO KNOW 

ABOUT BLOWING ROCK 

• In 1914 Mr. and Mrs. Stringfellow of Chetola brought a new species of 

rhododendron to the area from Holland. It was called “laurel” and featured 

prominently in Chetola’s landscaping. 

• The area known as Green Park was once a larger community than Blowing 

Rock. It was the first major settlement at the top of the mountain. Green Park 

had its own post office, stores and hotel. 

• Before the turn of the 20th Century, textile magnate Moses Cone visited 

Blowing Rock often. In the process of acquiring land for his “Flat Top Manor,” 

Mr. Cone met most everyone in Blowing Rock. He stayed at the Grand View 

House, a home overlooking the John’s River Gorge. It had been turned into a 

boarding house by Mrs. H.W. Weedon. 

• The oldest river in America, The New River, has its beginnings on the Blowing 

Rock Country Club golf course. 

• The Martin House, constructed in 1870, has been a boarding house, a private 

residence, and retail shops through the years. At one time it boasted fourteen 

bedrooms and four living rooms. 

• Dr. Morris Lazaron, a summer resident, was one of four chaplains selected to 

officiate at the burial of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery on 

November 11, 1921. Dr. Lazaron often spoke at Blowing Rock Methodist 

Church and drew overflowing crowds to his services. 

• J. Luther Snyder, the “Coca Cola King,” controlled three corporations, operating 

100 bottling plants in the Carolinas. He acquired the 36-acre Chetola Estate in 

1924 and increased the property to 196 acres. 

• In 1934 John D. Rockefeller, Jr. visited Blowing Rock. Mr. Rockefeller was taken 

to Wiseman’s View, a site with spectacular vistas of the Linville River and the 

Blue Ridge Mountains. He was so enthralled with Wiseman’s View that he 

purchased this vast acreage and donated it to the federal government.
