<strong>Rock</strong> has always been a<br />
favorite pastime because <strong>of</strong><br />
the unique make up <strong>of</strong> is<br />
business district. During the<br />
fifties, when Montaldos,<br />
Kairallahs and Razooks were<br />
among the most famous<br />
fashion houses in America,<br />
the people who came to<br />
<strong>Blowing</strong> <strong>Rock</strong> wanted to experience shopping in one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
south’s great resort communities and were just as intent on saving<br />
the bag with the store name to share with their friends back home<br />
as they were with the items they purchased. During the 1950s<br />
and well into the 1970s a popular part <strong>of</strong> the downtown shopping<br />
area were the auction houses, famous for their live “shows” both<br />
in the mornings and every night. Diamonds, paintings from the<br />
great masters, estate items, oriental carpets, fine china, silver and<br />
gold objects <strong>of</strong> art, bronzes, and more drew full houses every<br />
night. Seldom were the occasions when a police <strong>of</strong>ficer didn’t have<br />
to remind observers that they were impeding traffic, blocking the<br />
Main Street right-<strong>of</strong>-way. Shopping in <strong>Blowing</strong> <strong>Rock</strong> was and<br />
continues to this day to be very special.<br />
