When, in March of 1989 the village celebrated its centennial
the theme of “Proud of the Past– Poised for the Future” was
adopted for the year-long celebration. That theme remains as an
important priority among village leaders to this day.
It wasn’t until winter
sports came to the High
Country that Blowing Rock
went from a summer resort to
a year-round destination for
visitors– even then, it didn’t
happen overnight. Those
coming to Blowing Rock to
enjoy winter sports found
many store windows boarded
up, limited accommodations, only a couple of restaurants, a gas
station, pharmacy and a soda shop open. The season for the
great majority of downtown shops, restaurants and overnight
accommodations was from June to August.
As the popularity of
winter sports grew and with tremendous advancements in
snowmaking capability, the addition of snowboarding, ice skating,
and special promotions geared to generate interest in coming to
the mountains between Labor Day and Memorial Day, the
atmosphere of the village changed dramatically. No longer
considered a summer resort, Blowing Rock became a destination
for thousands, and in short order, shops, restaurants and motels,
hotels and inns remained open year-round, and the atmosphere
of Main Street changed from only a spotting of cars from out of
town, to a scene as busy as summer or autumn. From the first
snowfall of winter to the blooming of flowers during the spring,
Blowing Rock today is alive and vibrant, and the definition of
Blowing Rock as only a summer resort is gone forever, replaced
with an international reputation as a year-round vacation
destination.
