Janine Webber
Janine was born in Lvov, Poland in 1932. All of her immediate
family died in separate, horrifying circumstances during the
Holocaust, leaving Janine traumatised, alone and unsure of her
identity. After remaining in hiding for a year, where she only
had enough room to sit or lie, Janine lost the use of her legs.
She was subsequently sent to a convent where she understood
that in order to survive she would need to hide her Jewish
identity. Janine continues to tell her inspirational story of
survival to school children.
Zlata Filipovic
As a child, Zlata was caught up in the Bosnian war of the early
1990s. Zlata became known for her diary which she started
writing aged 11. What started out as an every day account of
a young girl in Sarajevo, changed when the war spread. Zlata
wrote of her fear during bombing, hiding in a cellar, the gradual
disintegration of life in a city without food, electricity or water
and worst of all, the death of her best friend in a bomb attack.
News agencies and media outlets labelled her the “Anne Frank
of Sarajevo” although unlike Anne Frank, Zlata and her family
survived the war and were evacuated to Paris in 1993. Zlata
has spoken extensively at schools and universities around the
world about her experiences and has collaborated with many
organisations including the Anne Frank House.
Grace Idowu
Grace’s son David was just 14 years old when he was murdered in
June 2008. He was viciously stabbed by 16 year old Elijah Dayoni,
while playing football in a park close to his home in Southwark,
south London. A few days after he was stabbed, David had been
due to speak at a public debating competition against knife and
gun culture. Since his death, Grace has visited schools, prisons
and young offenders’ institutions to raise awareness of the
consequences of violent crime and hostility. Grace has said “we
will never recover from the loss and from witnessing the pain our
son endured”.
