Alliance Chair of the Board’s Message LAISSEZ LES BONS TEMPS ROULER! It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 American Fraternal Alliance Annual Meeting in the remarkable city of New Orleans. This combination of educational content and location will make this one of the most memorable meetings in our organization’s 126-year history. We are thrilled to be able to have Mary Matalin and James Carville address our group, especially in this election year. They have roots in New Orleans, so we will benefit from both the timely and balanced political observations as well as some local flavor. And we can hardly believe that we were able to secure Jim Collins as a keynote speaker. The ideas on management, technology and organization of this best-selling author of Built to Last, Good to Great and How the Mighty Fall will continue to have a large impact on 21 st Century American business, and will no doubt help your society as well. The take-aways from his presentation will be invaluable in all your future decision-making and strategic planning. And if these three speakers weren’t enough, the workshops will be outstanding. They were designed to anticipate the changing requirements in governance, advocacy, marketing, technology and much more. Of course, there will be ample time to socialize with colleagues and enjoy fine dining and the standup comedy of Jimmy Travis on Saturday night. But there is another star of the show! The City of New Orleans is unique, described as not being a Southern city but a Caribbean city. Remnants of its historical European, Creole, African and Haitian heritage still influence its culture today. We have a prime location here at the beautiful Ritz Carlton to allow you to explore it all. Stuart B. Buchanan 2011-2012 American Fraternal Alliance Chair of the Board Stuart B. Buchanan serves as Catholic Order of Foresters' (COF) high secretarytreasurer and CFO. Since assuming these roles, he has participated in negotiations that led to two successful mergers and helped develop and initiate COF's general expense reduction initiative resulting in one of the fraternal system’s lowest cost per certificate.He directed COF's underwriting procedures re-engineering that significantly reduced application processing time and underwriting costs. Most recently, he led the Order through an administrative system conversion. Prior to his 2006 appointment as high secretary-treasurer, Buchanan was senior vice president of insurance operations, directing product development, leading the development and introduction of three long-term care plans and initiating the Order's first marketing alliance with another society. His responsibilities also included oversight of underwriting, administration, policy service, and information systems departments. Buchanan, a graduate of the University of Illinois, with a B.A. in economics, is Past President of the Illinois Fraternal Alliance. A member of the FINRA dealers, he holds Series 7 and 63 licenses.
