American Fraternal Alliance Mission Statement
The American Fraternal Alliance’s mission is to strengthen and
support its members and the fraternal benefit system by
providing advocacy, information and public policy development.
Advocacy: Deliver proactive and results-oriented advocacy of
members’ interests on key legislative and regulatory initiatives.
Information: Enable members to better manage their
societies by creating meaningful education programs, sharing
benchmarking data on best practices, enabling networking
opportunities and knowledge sharing.
Public Policy: Develop and promote positions on emerging
issues, and consistently and clearly communicate the benefits
of fraternal benefit societies.
Shared Values Statement
The Alliance values the fraternal model: Fraternal insurers
provide a successful, stable, and member-focused organizational
structure that provides valuable benefits to members; cost
effective financial and volunteer support to individuals,
organizations, and communities who need it most; and a
distinct and important alternative to the commercial life
insurance marketplace.
The Alliance values member involvement and interaction:
The fraternal industry and this Alliance cannot achieve their
potential without the active involvement of competent and
committed volunteers. The Alliance is committed to providing its
member society staff and volunteer leadership with opportunities
to build mutually beneficial long-term relationships through
knowledge sharing and common experiences.
The Alliance values collaboration with industry, public
policymakers, and non-profit community service
organizations: Whenever possible, the Alliance seeks to work
with organizations representing the financial services industry,
state and federal public policymakers, and non-profit
community service organizations to achieve common goals.
The Alliance values highly effective and efficient operations:
The Alliance strives to make membership in the organization
cost-effective and valuable to all sizes of fraternal societies by
combining a high quality staff, proven technology, and a
focused and issue-oriented approach to advocacy and public
policy initiatives, with a funding philosophy that relies on dues
and non-dues sources of revenue.
The Alliance values fairness and opportunity in governance:
The Alliance Board and its committees are open to and
composed of individuals from societies that accurately
represent the diversity of the Alliance. Every Board and
committee member has an equal voice.
Alliance Chair of the Board’s Message
LAISSEZ LES BONS
TEMPS ROULER!
It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you
to the 2012 American Fraternal Alliance
Annual Meeting in the remarkable city of
New Orleans. This combination of
educational content and location will make
this one of the most memorable meetings
in our organization’s 126-year history.
We are thrilled to be able to have Mary Matalin and James
Carville address our group, especially in this election year. They
have roots in New Orleans, so we will benefit from both the timely
and balanced political observations as well as some local flavor.
And we can hardly believe that we were able to secure Jim
Collins as a keynote speaker. The ideas on management,
technology and organization of this best-selling author of Built to
Last, Good to Great and How the Mighty Fall will continue to have a
large impact on 21 st Century American business, and will no
doubt help your society as well. The take-aways from his
presentation will be invaluable in all your future decision-making
and strategic planning.
And if these three speakers weren’t enough, the workshops
will be outstanding. They were designed to anticipate the
changing requirements in governance, advocacy, marketing,
technology and much more. Of course, there will be ample time
to socialize with colleagues and enjoy fine dining and the standup
comedy of Jimmy Travis on Saturday night.
But there is another star of the show! The City of New Orleans
is unique, described as not being a Southern city but a Caribbean
city. Remnants of its historical European, Creole, African and
Haitian heritage still influence its culture today. We have a prime
location here at the beautiful Ritz Carlton to allow you to explore
it all.
Stuart B. Buchanan
2011-2012 American Fraternal Alliance Chair of the Board
Stuart B. Buchanan serves as Catholic Order of Foresters' (COF) high secretarytreasurer
and CFO. Since assuming these roles, he has participated in negotiations
that led to two successful mergers and helped develop and initiate COF's general
expense reduction initiative resulting in one of the fraternal system’s lowest cost per
certificate.He directed COF's underwriting procedures re-engineering that
significantly reduced application processing time and underwriting costs. Most
recently, he led the Order through an administrative system conversion.
Prior to his 2006 appointment as high secretary-treasurer, Buchanan was senior
vice president of insurance operations, directing product development, leading the
development and introduction of three long-term care plans and initiating the
Order's first marketing alliance with another society. His responsibilities also
included oversight of underwriting, administration, policy service, and information
systems departments.
Buchanan, a graduate of the University of Illinois, with a B.A. in economics, is
Past President of the Illinois Fraternal Alliance. A member of the FINRA dealers, he
holds Series 7 and 63 licenses. Buchanan earned the insurance industry Fellow Life
Management Institute with distinction designation.
•> Jim Collins, Great by Choice: Uncertainty,
Chaos, and Luck—Why Some Thrive
Despite Them All > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Thanks to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and
the Presidents Section Advisory Council for their
sponsorship of Jim Collins..
Jim Collins is a student and teacher of enduring great
companies — how they grow, how they attain superior
performance, and how good companies can become great
companies. Having invested nearly a quarter of a century of
research into the topic, Jim has authored or co-authored six
books that have sold in total more than ten million copies
worldwide. They include: Built To Last, on the Business Week
best seller list for more than six years; the bestseller Good to
Great, translated into 35 languages; and How the Mighty Fall, a
New York Times bestseller that examines how great companies
can self-destruct.
His most recent book is GREAT BY CHOICE: Uncertainty,
Chaos, and Luck—Why Some Thrive Despite Them All, coauthored
with Morten Hansen. Based on nine years of
research, it answers the question: Why do some companies
thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not? Great by
Choice distinguishes itself from Jim’s prior books by its focus
not just on performance, but also on the type of unstable
environments faced by leaders today.
Doug has worked at Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans since 2001 where he currently serves as Thrivent’s
Director of Capital and Model Management. He also served in the
various officer roles of the Alliance Actuaries Section from
2003- 2005. Prior to joining the fraternal world at Thrivent,
Doug spent 1 2 years as a valuation and modeling actuary in the
commercial insurance world at Fortis Financial Group in St.
Paul, MN.
Doug has been the key actuarial contact for the Alliance
regarding Risk Based Capital (RBC) for fraternals. Initially, he
worked with the Alliance in 2002 to begin discussions with the
NAIC. He participated with the Fraternal Capital Adequacy
Task Force during 2008-201 0 to address solvency issues for
fraternals raised by New York and Minnesota. The work of this
group eventually led to a recommendation to apply statutory
RBC principles to fraternals. The suggestion for a separate
Fraternal RBC Model Act has helped forestall more onerous,
state-by-state regulation.
Since 2002, Doug has assisted both fraternal and state
WORKSHOP SESSION I 1:30PM
#1 - Governance Roadmap: Change Starts at Your
Convention
Grand Ballroom
Societies whose conventions act as the supreme governing
body are faced with a variety of challenges that restrict their
ability to grow and modernize. Educated delegates are critical
to conventions making decisions – some of which can take
their power away for the good of the long term survival of a
society. Learn from two society leaders how they made major
changes to their governance structure through committed
communication and educational efforts. Attendees also will
learn how one fraternal saw opportunity at its 201 2
convention to provide training to delegates on how to
effectively plan an outreach event, how to attract more
volunteers and how to grow chapter membership.
make sound business decisions even on a modest budget. Learn
what tweaks carriers are making to existing products in lieu of low
interest rates. Big carriers have learned how to capitalize on social
stay compliant? What new insurance products are being offered
to consumers and how are they being marketed? Others are
#7 – Protecting Your Society from Cyber Liability
Grand Ballroom
In the early days of the fraternal system, the biggest risk to a
society’s financial health was a pandemic. In today’s ever-changing
world, there are much larger and unpredictable risks that face
financial services providers, including a breach of sensitive
membership information. Our panel of experts will demonstrate
not only how to assess your society’s risk to these external
environmental factors, but how to protect yourself, your board,
and your members from the potential fallout from these risks.
how his society engaged a nationally recognized measurement
system to gain some enlightening insights into its members’
experience. Attendees will also learn how other financial services
organizations are able to benchmark their customers’
satisfaction, drive organizational strategy and use the results in
fresh marketing and communications campaigns.
steering overlooked campaigns to unexpected landslide victories
and for re-making political underdogs into upset winners.
His winning streak began in 1 986, when he managed the
gubernatorial victory of Robert Casey in Pennsylvania. In 1 987,
Carville helped guide Wallace Wilkinson to the governor's seat
in Kentucky. Carville continued his winning streak with wins in
New Jersey with Frank Lautenberg elected to the US Senate.
He next managed the successful 1 990 gubernatorial campaign
of Georgia's Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller, and in 1 991 ,
Carville— who had already become prominent in political
circles— drew national attention when he led Senator Harris
Wofford from 40 points behind in the polls to an upset
landslide victory over former Pennsylvania Governor and U.S.
Attorney General Richard Thornburgh. But his most prominent
victory was in 1 992 when he helped William Jefferson Clinton
win the Presidency.
In recent years, Carville has been focusing on campaigns in
more than 20 countries around the globe, including leading
Ehud Barak to victory in his campaign to become the Prime
Minister of Israel in 1 999.
Along with pollster Stanley Greenberg, Carville founded
Democracy Corps, an independent, non-profit polling
organization dedicated to making government more responsive
to the American people. Democracy Corps has conducted over
200 national, congressional and local surveys, interviewing over
220,000 American voters during the past 1 0 years.
Carville is a frequent political commentator and contributor
on CNN. He also serves as a Professor of Practice at Tulane
University in New Orleans.
Mary Matalin is a celebrated conservative voice and political
contributor for CNN. Matalin formerly served as assistant to
President George W. Bush and counselor to Vice President
Dick Cheney, and was the first White House official to hold
that double title.
Before joining the Bush/Cheney White House, Matalin hosted
CNN’s critically acclaimed debate show, Crossfire. Matalin is the
former founding co-host of the Washington-based political
weeknight talk show, Equal Time, which premiered in May 1 993
on CNBC. She served as co-host until shortly after the 1 996
national political conventions. Matalin also co-authored the bestselling
political campaign book All’s Fair: Love, War and Running
for President with her husband, James Carville. Her most recent
book, Letters to My Daughters (April 2004), was named a Book of
the Month Club selection as well as made The New York Times
and The Washington Post best-seller lists.
Matalin took her sharp wit and free-spirited political repartee
to the airwaves during her own three-hour afternoon radio
program on the CBS Talk Radio Network. The Mary Matalin
Show highlighted current events, featured distinguished guests
and listener calls. In addition, Talk Daily recognized The Mary
#2012FratAllianceMeeting 2012 Annual Meeting 63
Alliance Information
AMERICAN FRATERNAL ALLIANCE
ANTITRUST GUIDELINES
The American Fraternal Alliance is an association of fraternal
benefit societies organized to promote the general welfare of the
fraternal benefit system and its individual members by uniting
societies in matters of mutual concern and interest. Its aim is to
promote unity and understanding among member-societies.
The Alliance is not intended to, and may not, play any role in
business decisions of its member societies. No agreements,
express or implied, will be authorized, sanctioned or permitted
which restrict the individual member-society’s freedom to make
independent business decisions.
Through its annual meetings, sections meetings, committee
meetings and other activities, Alliance brings together officers
and employees of societies which may in a broad sense
occasionally be in competition for members. While Alliance
activities are principally educational, the Alliance Board of
Directors recognizes the possibility that the association and its
activities could be seen by some as an opportunity for
anticompetitive conduct. The Board unequivocally opposes any
act, omission or communication which has a tendency to
restrict competition within the fraternal benefit system. The
Board further states its uncompromising support for the
principles of competition and freedom of economic decisionmaking
embodied in the antitrust laws of the United States.
It is the responsibility of every participant in Alliance
activities to avoid the appearance of anticompetitive conduct
and otherwise act in strict compliance with the antitrust laws of
the United States and its individual states. Problems and issues
may be discussed; statistics and information designed to inform
members may be shared. However, no polls should be taken and
no agreements should be reached, express or implied,
suggesting a particular course of action regarding the day-to-day
business affairs of individual fraternal benefit societies.
Premium formulas, agent commissions and coverage exclusions
are subjects that must be approached with particular sensitivity
and caution. In general, every effort should be made to promote
individual decision-making on all matters involving the business
affairs of individual member-societies.
On May 5, 201 2, thousands of individuals came together in
communities across America for the eleventh annual JOIN
HANDS DAY. Youths and adults, seniors and children —
fraternal benefit society members and non-members —
mobilized in their own neighborhoods to solve problems and
build new relationships. People of all ages began to understand
the value in youths and adults working together. Many heard
about fraternal benefit societies for the first time because of
JOIN HANDS DAY and they were impressed. Remember the
first Saturday in May as the day when generations unite to
improve their communities.
