However, accord<strong>in</strong>g to the testim<strong>on</strong>y of other <strong>in</strong>forrnante , it seems<br />
that the quarry is not <strong>on</strong> the island, but opposite <strong>on</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong>land <strong>on</strong><br />
a little cape called Nuvugutuk, Father Mascaret hopes that he will<br />
be able to visit the quarry.<br />
Richnees and antiquity of the archaeological sites_of the arg1. <strong>The</strong><br />
past occupati<strong>on</strong> of the regi<strong>on</strong> was obviously of some importance.<br />
<strong>The</strong> worked artifacts I brought back have been deposited with the<br />
Nat;<strong>on</strong>al Museurn of Canada and it ig hoped that these will give some<br />
idea of the date of the sites.I On a boat <strong>trip</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer I<br />
have pers<strong>on</strong>ally surveyed the follow<strong>in</strong>g sites:<br />
Ipiutaq -Okiiyik:. At leaet 50 old st<strong>on</strong>e hous es , quantitiee of whale -<br />
b<strong>on</strong>e, a large number of st<strong>on</strong>e artifacts which have been collected<br />
by the Eskirnos. <strong>The</strong> altitude of the sites varied, but sorrre are at<br />
least 100 feet above the present sea level,<br />
Tuperpvikacilak: I counted at least 7 st<strong>on</strong>e houses and quantities<br />
of st<strong>on</strong>e artifacts.<br />
Ipiutaq.i Here I counted at least 10 st<strong>on</strong>e hous es and rnany artifacts .<br />
Near Wakeham Bay I surveyed 3 st<strong>on</strong>e housesl these were<br />
betterpr*".',,ffie1sewhereandapParent1yofmore<br />
recent date. <strong>The</strong> Eskirnos told rne that there are 6 st<strong>on</strong>e houses<br />
at Niaq<strong>on</strong>gut, and about LZ at Igluluardjuk. <strong>The</strong> existence of other<br />
sites <strong>on</strong> several little islands ly<strong>in</strong>g between Niaq<strong>on</strong>gut and Okiivik<br />
was menti<strong>on</strong>ed.<br />
This whole regi<strong>on</strong> is very rich <strong>in</strong> game, certa<strong>in</strong>ly it is the<br />
richest area <strong>on</strong> the south shore of Huds<strong>on</strong> Strait. For at least the<br />
past ten years the present camps, whether the temporary seas<strong>on</strong>al<br />
or the more permanent w<strong>in</strong>ter camps, have all been adjacent to<br />
ancient sites and appear <strong>on</strong> the map as follows:<br />
