Certainly we praise <strong>the</strong> acquisition <strong>of</strong> friendship; but good<br />

friends should be admitted into one's company; not obtaining<br />

such friends, let one, subsisting on pure food, walk alone like<br />

Noticing how even two glittering armlets <strong>of</strong> gold, though<br />

well made by a goldsmith, strike against each o<strong>the</strong>r, let one<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are cold, heat, hunger, thirst, wind, sun, gadflies,<br />

snakes; having overcome all <strong>the</strong>se various things, let a man<br />

As <strong>the</strong> huge-bodied, white-spotted, noble elephant w<strong>and</strong>ers<br />

in <strong>the</strong> forest, whi<strong>the</strong>rsoever he will, deserting his herd, so also<br />
