White limestone (<strong>the</strong> lower quarry)<br />

At <strong>the</strong> western end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> quarry <strong>the</strong> last-named bed is traversed<br />

by a fault <strong>of</strong> uncertain throw, <strong>and</strong> at a few yards distance by <strong>the</strong><br />

North Hendre Vein, so that <strong>the</strong> measurements are interrupted.<br />

<strong>The</strong> shale <strong>and</strong> limestone with corals, previously alluded to, occur<br />

on <strong>the</strong> western side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se breaks at about 200 yards distance<br />

from <strong>the</strong> quarry, probably between 300 <strong>and</strong> 400 feet below <strong>the</strong><br />

second s<strong>and</strong>stone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above section. <strong>The</strong> middle white <strong>and</strong><br />

massive limestones crop out fur<strong>the</strong>r west, but are almost entirely<br />

hidden in this valley by Drift-s<strong>and</strong>. Rising rapidly on <strong>the</strong> south<br />

side <strong>the</strong>y run through <strong>the</strong> Owt Coed <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> Garreg-boeth<br />

above Coed-du to <strong>the</strong> gorge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Alyn above Rhydymwyn, where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are finely exposed in a number <strong>of</strong> bold cliffs on both sides<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river. In crossing <strong>the</strong>se hills, little can be seen but terrace<br />

after terrace <strong>of</strong> massive grey or white limestone, with but a few<br />

thin b<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> shale proved here <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re in <strong>the</strong> shafts. A powerful<br />

cross-course runs from Ffynnon Lleinw by Mwyn-bwll to Hesp<br />
