Ask the Maestro!
What is the correct way to polish an instrument?
Excellent question! Most importantly, start with one small section at a time,
not a large section or the entire back, for example. I have seen more than
a few players, even seasoned professionals, create quite a mess by trying
to clean too large an area at a time. Whenever using a new brand of cleaner
or polish for the first time, be sure to test it first on a small, inconsipuous
spot. The directions you see below, which are found on the Professional
Luthier Polish, detail an excellent technique for cleaning and polishing...
Directions:
Place appoximately 10-15 drops of polish on a clean, soft, folded cotton or
microfiber cloth or clean soft folded paper towel. Using moderate pressure, rub polish
onto varnish in a circular motion in 1” or larger circles. Wipe off polish before it has
dried with another clean soft cloth or soft paper towel. Use light to moderate pressure
either in a circular motion or in the direction of the grain.
Professional Luthier Polish
We highly recommend this German made Professional Luthier
Polish for use on fine instruments that are older and/or highly
valued. This polish is the original formula used for decades by
the world’s finest violin shops including the SHAR Repair &
Restoration Shop. The reason that the Professional Luthier
Polish is the choice of fine restoration shops is because of it’s
effectiveness as a polish and cleaner while at the same time being
mild enough to not cause damage to soft and/or delicate varnish.
IMPORTANT: Some varnish is so delicate that even a very
damp cloth will remove varnish, so we strongly advise players to
follow the directions listed on this page regarding “How to polish
an instrument”.
