✔ a glass <strong>of</strong> water<br />

✔ a piece <strong>of</strong> card with an<br />

arrow drawn on it<br />

Background<br />

This demonstration shows the<br />

<strong>in</strong>version <strong>of</strong> images and also<br />

that lenses can me made<br />

from several materials other<br />

than glass.<br />

Follow these steps<br />

1 Place the card beh<strong>in</strong>d the<br />

glass <strong>of</strong> water.<br />

2 View the arrow through the<br />

water.<br />

So what happened?<br />

<strong>The</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> the arrow is<br />

reversed when viewed<br />

through the water. This is a<br />

simple way to <strong>in</strong>troduce the<br />

way <strong>in</strong> which lenses work.<br />

What next?<br />

Further work can be done by<br />

produc<strong>in</strong>g ray diagrams for<br />

the water lens.<br />
