So what happened?<br />

When the match head is held<br />

at the focal po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> the lamp<br />

it smoulders then bursts <strong>in</strong>to<br />

flame. <strong>The</strong> bulb at the focal<br />

po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> one mirror produces<br />

visible light and <strong>in</strong>frared<br />

radiation, which are reflected<br />

<strong>of</strong>f the mirror <strong>in</strong> a parallel<br />

beam to the other mirror.<br />

Here they are reflected <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the focal po<strong>in</strong>t, where the<br />

match head is.<br />

This is the pr<strong>in</strong>ciple beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

some types <strong>of</strong> solar power<br />

stations. <strong>The</strong> copper sulphate<br />

solution absorbs <strong>in</strong>frared but<br />

only a little <strong>of</strong> the visible<br />

light. <strong>The</strong> light is reflected to<br />

the focal po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> the mirror<br />

but the match doesn’t ignite.<br />

<strong>The</strong> iod<strong>in</strong>e absorbs most <strong>of</strong><br />

the visible light but not the<br />

<strong>in</strong>frared. Only a little light<br />

passes through to be<br />

reflected <strong>of</strong>f the mirror but<br />

the match still lights, show<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that the <strong>in</strong>frared passes<br />

through the solution and is<br />

reflected <strong>in</strong>to the focal po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

After a few “ignitions” the<br />

second mirror can get very<br />

sooty and doesn’t work as<br />

well, so clean both mirrors<br />

periodically with a s<strong>of</strong>t cloth.<br />

What next?<br />

This can lead on to solar<br />

power, the visible spectrum<br />

and <strong>in</strong>frared radiation.<br />
