East Indian recipes take a long, long time
There wasn't a grain of
curry powder.
An East Indian meal of
Chicken Curry, Chappati,
Beans and Potatoes, Rayata
and Gulah Zamuns, as prepared
by Swarn Lata Bhangu,
was hot enough to curl one's
toenails, but not a drop of
curry was included in the
recipes.
Swarn Bhangu first came to
Quesnel in 1969, after marrying
Romesh Bhangu in India.
They have two daughters
Indra, 8, and Suman, 7, as well
as a year-bid son Aman.
Romesh has lived in Quesnel
since 1965. He met Swarn
while visiting India. Both are
well-educated; Romesh with a
Bachelor of Education and a
Master's degree in English
while Swarn has a Bachelor of
Education degree.
Education was so important
in Swarn's home that she
almost didn't learn to cook.
Her father was a doctor and
every time Swarn or one of
the other children offered to
help in the kitchen they were
told to go and read a book,
Swarn explained.
She lived at home until she
was married when she suddenly
found herself responsible
for preparing meals. But
she says she had few problems
as she'd watched her
mother enough to pick up the
basics.
"There are no recipes," she
explained. 'These are family
recipes. We have made the
recipes by ourselves out of
experience. If you go somewhere
else they will give you
a different recipe."
Swarn doesn't use a recipe
book at all to cook East Indian -
food and only wrote the
recipes out to help her students
when she taught a
course in East Indian Cooking ,
for Continuing Education.
Most of her students wanted
to learn how to make
Chicken Curry and Chappati,
a type of bread, so Swarn
decided to demonstrate those
two recipes.
Most East Indian recipes
require a fair amount of
preparation, Swarn notes.
"Especially back home. We
need one servant or helper for
the house lady. The woman
spends so much time in the
kitchen she can't do other
duties."
In Canada appliances help
cut down the work, but it
still takes close to three hours
to prepare a meal. Usually
Swarn makes East Indian
food for the family's main
meal and Canadian food for
the other two meals.
Her two daughters like
East Indian food at home but
don't like to take it to school
Quesnel were present, with 38
attending.
The meeting was called to
discuss the business of the
Northern Interior zone, and to
exchange ideas on fund-raising
and community services.
The meeting was at the
home of Marg Harding and a
delicious lunch was served.
The theme was "Hard Times"
Williams Lake Club won the
zone interclub trophy, while
the Quesnel Club walked
away with the expansion
fully prepared Chicken Curry.
When transplanting the recipes
from India to Canada,
Swarn finds herself making
;:some changes. In India they
have slightly different vegetables
and no broccoli of
asparagus, Swarn said. Many
vegetables or similar versions
of them are common to both
India and Canada although in
India they are always available.
"We get all those things
throughout the year in India!
Fresh," Swarn commented.
One thing she can't get in
Canada is Corriander leaves,
which are used to flavor
curries. Parsley can be used
as a substitute but Swarn
prefers to grow Corriander
leaves in the summer and
freeze them for use during the
winter.
At times Swarn had trouble
finding the hot green peppers
used in East Indian recipes
but usually she is able to get
them at a local Italian import
store.
Onions are available in both
countries and are used extensively
in Swarn's dishes. "You
can't avoid them, especially in
East Indian cooking," she
explained.
When she made the chicken
curry she ground the onions in
the blender. Usually she cooks
the diced onions with a half a
cup of water in a pressure
cooker at low heat. In India
the onions are placed in a
heavy stone pot and crushed
with a heavy wooden stick
four inches in diameter. "That
is the best way," Swarn said,
adding that East Indian women
often make enough
ground onions to last for a
week at a time.
Much of the spice in East
Indian foods comes from Garamn
Masala, a spice mixture
used in many dishes. Swarn
usually buys it already mixed
but for anyone who would like
Too much Garamn Masala
can make a dish that would
give a dragon indigestion but
Swarn's recipes are mild for
East Indian food. Swarn explained
that her family never
had their food very hot as her
doctor father didn't think it
was healthy. She agreed that
East Indian food is hot by
Canadian standards.
"This hot food helps keep
the body cool in the hot
country. It's traditional,"
Swarn commented.
As well as the Chicken
Curry and the Beans and
Potatoes, both hot dishes,
Swarn made Rayata, Chappatis
and Gulah Zan uns.
Rayata is a cool mixture of
sour cream and milk or yogurt
which contrasts the hot spicy
main dish. Chappatis are a
type of bread. There are
several different types, each
using the same basic recipe
but varying in how they are
prepared. Swarn noted that
both her daughters are very
fond of stuffed chappatis
which are called Prathans.
The Gulah Zamus are a
sweet pastry, a favorite with
Swarn's children and especially
of her year-old son.
A typical East Indian dinner
includes a curried dish
made with meat, a cool
Rayata combination, a vegetable
dish and Chappatis.
Romesh pointed out that few
families in India eat much
meat.
February was a busy month
at Quesnel Detachment with
21 cases of break and enter
and 23 cases of wilful damage
being reported.
The wilful damage remained
approximately the same as
Mandrake is pleased that
magic and live entertainers in
all fields are becoming more
popular. The live entertainers
are working on the streets for
Mandrake said. More people
The logical question to ask a
magician is "what is magic?"
To Mandrake, the term means
more than the stage magic of
rabbits popping out of hats
and flowers out of handkerchiefs.
For him those things
are ordinary, part of his
"Everybody is a magician,"
he explains. "Everybody can
Area resident
dies suddenly
By Ellen Rogers
992-6928
Members of the community
were shocked and saddened
with the sudden untimely
death of Les Leonard and the
hospitalization of his wife
Hannah.
Les was raised on his
member of the Canadian Navy
met his Irish wife Hannah and
150 Mile, Quesnel and Wells.
ment was the Cottonwood
team which won second place
by taking their first four to
get to the finals against
Stromville. Experience then
ELECTION HELD
On March 2, an election was
held for officers of the Wells
Improvement District. The
following people were voted
to fill the three vacant posi
tions: Frank Nestel, Richard
Parker and John Campbell.
The Quesnel Billy Barker
Days Society has come forth
with a plea for new represen
tation in its organization from
different segments of the
community.
According to society presi
dent Ron Paull, there is a
serious need for "the infusion
of some new blood" into the
organization.
"Without some different
volunteers coming forth to
serve on the Board of Direc
tors, this Society is destined
for the same ill fate as many of
its forerunners — good exam
ple — winter frolics," Paull
reminded.
Nominee
declares
Squamish trainman L.C.
Minchin has formally an
nounced that he will be
competing against Harry 01-
aussen for the federal New
Democratic Party Cariboo-
Chilcotin riding nomination.
Minchin, a long time Squa
mish resident, is a founding
member of the NDP and party
activist, and says he is run
ning because of a concern with
the Canadian economy.
He has dismissed national
unity as the key issue of the
pending federal election, say
ing that "regardless of back
ground—Canadians are much
more concerned with the
condition of the Canadian
economy, and the inability of
the Trudeau government to
deal effectively with the prob
lem."
In a statement issued by
the Society, Paull noted that
the present core of the
organization is "a very good
one." "However, any organiz
ation needs new ideas and
new enthusiasm on a contin
uing basis in order to develop
effectively," he concluded.
The comments came in
a newsletter announcing the
society's annual general meet
ing March 9.
Although new blood may be
heeded it looks as though the
society is currently in healthy
financial shape, and indica
tions are that the 1978 Billy
Barker Days Festival will be
more impressive than its
predecessors.
The society's financial situ
ation was released last week.
"You will note that we
realized a profit of almost
$3,000," Paull commented.
The society's current balance
now stands at exactly
$2,991.74.
The 1977 profit will be
mostly invested in acquiring a
special birthday present for
the town's fiftieth year.
"We are intending to have a
stature of Billy Barker carved
from a large log which would
be erected in LeBourdais
Park near the tourist bureau,
Paull announced.
Apparently, the Quesnel
Kinsmen's Club has indicated
an interest in participating in
the venture. •""
The clubs and organizations
which do participate financial
ly in the Billy Barker Days
Festival this year are being
provided with the chance to
earn more money for their
own projects.
In previous years the festi
val's profits were divided on a
50-50 basis between the soci
ety and the participating
organizations.
This year, however, the
split will be 60-40, with the
lesser amount going to the
society. '
, "This arrangement," said
Paull, "has been established in
order to help the clubs in
dealing with their own vari
ous projects in our anniver
sary year.
Speakers address group
By Vickie Nelson
249-5300
Eleven members came out
to the Bouchie Lake Recrea
tion Committee meeting on
Feb. 27 to hear two guests
speak.
Nancy Demers, Bouchie
Lake's candidate for the Miss
Quesnel title, gave a resume
of her past, present and
future activities during the
competition period. I outlined
this for my readers a couple of
weeks ago.
This afternoon Nancy was
to have her radio interview on
the Coffee Break program.
Miss Quesnel will be selected
March 16 and the crowning
will take place at the Grand
Ball on March 18.
A second guest speaker was
Const. Stu Deeks of the
Quesnel RCMP detachment.
He spoke to the group about
liquor regulations in connec
tion with cabarets held in the
hall.
Police will pay periodic
visits, during the evening, to
any group that takes out a
Liquor Licence. They can also
challenge anyone they consid
er to be under legal age (19
yrs) who is consuming alcohol.
Remember, these functions
are for adults, not teen-agers.
REGULAR MARKET
The Recreation Commission
decided to hold Flea Markets
on a regular basis on the first
Sunday of every month.
The first one for 1978 was
held last Sunday. For more
information, or to reserve a
space, interested persons
should contact Louise Kania
at 249-5168.
Some things of interest are
planned for the future. A
Progressive Dinner is to be
held for commission members
and friends on Saturday,
April 8.
"Danny's Barbecue", which
is becoming an annual event,
is planned for mid-June. A
float, is hopefully, going to be
entered in the Billy Barker
Days parade.
Right now the commission
is on the look-out for someone
to volunteer as chairperson,
whose job will be to collect
and organize ideas for the
float.
THE NUMBER IS...
I sometimes get calls from
persons wanting to use the
Bouchie Lake Hall for some
function. The person who
looks after hall use and rental
is FJnora Joaquin, who can be
reached at 249-5252.
SADDLECLUB
Next meeting of the Bou
chie Lake Saddle club is
March 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the
home of Gus and Nita Camer
on. Everyone interested is
welcome to come.
CHILDREN'S PLAY
Marion Gillard, who lives in
this area, has written and is
currently directing a musical
chfldren's play, which is to be
put on at the school sometime
in the near future.
This is a Little Theatre
production, and cast members
are also Little Threatre mem
bers.
BIRTHDAYS
Two birthdays are coming
up, and this time I'll get you
on time. Erick Demers is 11
on March 8, and Robert
Kolody is 11 on March 11.
Con tinning Education course
Psychic phen
A tempest in a teapot is
brewing over one of Continuing
Education's courses.
On February 8 the Observer
published a letter from
\[ittdrio and Elke Tommasini
of Bouchie Lake which stated
"We would like to make your
readers aware that astrology,
palmistry, trances etc. are
Satanworship and a horror
before God. These things are
promoted by Continuing Education
in Quesnel."
Contacted by the Observer,
EBce Tommasini explained the
course to which she was
referring was taught by Sylvia
Muschik. Muschik's
course, "Psychic Exploration,
The New Frontier," is described
in Continuing Education's
spring calendar as "paranormal
phenomena, telepathy,
trances, hypnosis, the
aura, astrology, palmistry and
numerology will be discussed."
The course started
January 31 and is being held
in Bouchie Lake Elementary
School library.
"Palm-reading, astrology,
looking into the future is none
of our business," Tommasini
said, referring to the Biblical
story of King Saul who lost his
kingdom after consulting an
oracle. That was God's punishment
for Saul's efforts" to see
into the future, Tommasini
explained.
Tommasini said she is familiar
with the Bible and teaches
Sunday School for the Evangelical
Free Church. "God's
White
So Convenient
Each . . .
1
first command is, I am your
God."
There are two powers, God
and Satan, Tommasini noted.
God doesn't want people to
probe into the occult so Satan
encourages people to try it.
The Bible forbids palm-reading
and astrology. "If it
doesn't come from God, this
power, it comes from Satan."
Tommasini believes occult
powers come from Satan even
if the people practicing them
don't know it. "Sometimes
they don't even know who
gives them the power. If
something happens, if it's not
from God, it's from Satan.
Mrs. Muschik should read the
Bible and find there what she
is doing."
Tommasini commented that
the occult was now becoming
openly popular. 'These things
are just at the moment on top.
The churches are empty and
the occult moves in."
Evangelical Free church
Pastor Nick Pasechnik did not
want to comment on the
controversy in an interview,
but said he would be preparing
a written statement in the
next few weeks.
Muschik found the whole
situation confusing, especially
as she has been teaching the
course for seven years and
no-one has ever complained
before.
She said Continuing Education's
description of the
course was slightly misleading.
she said, is a beginner's
course in parapsychology.
"Parapsychology is the study
of the mind's potential.
-This includes the psychic
abilities such as clairvoyance,
telepathy and psychokineses,"
Muschik explained. She also
covers related areas such as
astrology and palmology for
which,some scientists and
doctors have found some
validation.
Muschik added some doc-,
tors have found that studying
the hand can reveal indicatons
of heart disease and certain
types of congenital illness.
"The type of study we do is
not used as a basis of
fortunetelling but a3 a scienti :
fie inquiry into how they
(psychic abilities) work and
why. Everyone has them to
some degree and they can be
developed, just like any other
talent."
A study at Duke University
showed that people have two
different types of extra-sensory
perception, negative and
positive. Negative ESP is a
below-average sensitivity to
psychic communication.
"People appear to have
abilities that are extensions of
our senses. Animals seem to
have a. heightened sense of
awareness as well and have
often rescued people in dangerous
situations, apparently
relying on this heightened
awareness."
Any experiments done in
that class are done to help
people realize their potential,
by sales of Norman Anderson's butcher cows from Salmon Arm
selling to 34.90.
Feeder cattle closed firm on a small volume with sales of
Darrell comozzetto's 735 lb. steers to 48 cents followed by sales
of Edward Oddy's 505 lb. heifers to 50.25.
Stock S/C and H/C traded up to 2 dollars stronger on the
better quality kinds with sales of Bruce Bolton's 505 lb. S/C to
55.50 followed by sales of Dennis Sam's light S/C to 55 cents
and his light H/C to 50 cents.
Bred cows and bred heifers were not too plentiful but traded
generally active on the younger earlier calving kinds. One lot of
the Barnes Lake Cattle Co.'s bred heifers sold to a top of
$350.00.
A total of 420 head of bred cows and heifer calves were sold
QUESNEL MILLIONAIRES' Doug Festerling starts to mix it up with Fort St. John Golden Hawk defender in front of
goaltender Leroy Krueger, who seems to have other things, like where the puck is, on his mind. Another Hawk defenceman, Ron
Payou, also looks to be concentrating on the approaching frozen chunk of rubber.
All Fort St. John Golden
with relatively easy 6-2
evening and Sunday afternoon.
Wik, visibly upset over the
Darrell Leahy hit Quesnel
goaltender Larry Brunt while
he was out of his crease and
was consequently a target for
Quesnel from then on in the
second period.
Leahy created the mixup
when he took Brunt out and
Essentially, the game was
Overtime
with
\L„- MikeReimer
Some say winning isn't everything but ask the
Quesnel Kangaroos and they'll show you different.
They've had but one thing on their bounding minds
all season. Beat the Prince George Mohawks! It's a
wonder a Third World War hasn't already broken
out between the two clubs after they played each
other 24 times during the regular season and five
times now in the Cariboo Hockey League playoff
finals.
Both teams have endured an incredibly horrendous
season league-wise with the suspended operations
of the Williams Lake Stampeders. Because
they did, and because the new Kamloops Cowboys
and the Stamps are back in the fold, there's a
four-team CHL afoot and things look even rosier in
the 1978-79 campaign.
The roots of success in Quesnel can only be
attributed to the hard work of management, general
manager Hugh Readman in particular, and the
Roo booster club, which has helped keep the club
above the dregs of financial debt.
Some said that Readman contracted cauliflower
ear (or topmuchis telephonis) after the long hours
he spent on the phone negotiating, arguing and
asking hockey players if they like Quesnel.
Some of the new talent that has arrived, and is
just now beginning to blossom, is the all-import line
of Bill Roach, Wayne Holmes and Len Chalmers,
who, when playing their game, can best anything
the Mohawks throw at them. ,
Then there's always the CHL's high-scoring trio
of John Price, Jack Marsh and Don Gook who ended
up the top three points getters in the league
starting with Gook and ending with Price.
Of late, coach Glen Richards has been able to put
' together a "third line" of equal importance in other
aspects. Although perhaps not as proficent as the
first two in scoring, the likes of Dave Oakford,
Howie Parks, Ken Price, Don Festerling and Brad
Wiles checked and gave the others a rest. A vital
point to consider, says Richards.
The defence has been plagued with injuries and
defections this season with veteran Dick Marsh out
for much of the year and Glen Connor now playing
hurt. Still, considering the circumstances, Gary
Criss, Rob Lattman, Ken Reid and Neil Muir have
done a creditable job.
And to think what might have been had a player
like Glen Wylie decided to stay can only be left to
the imagination. It certainly couldn't have been any
worse.
Whoa! I'm not forgetting the goaltenders, with
Jerry Thomas coming up with a good season and
backup Cliff 'Jed' Clampitt filling in adequately
Like a well-known Prince George sports figure
said last week: "This is the best Quesnel team I've
seen here in seven years. It'd use to be they had
only desire to beat Prince George. Now they've got
talent and desire."
Bowron scenery
greets skiers
By Magnus Vinje
On February 25, about 25
members of the Cariboo Ski-
Touring Club went on an overnight
ski trip to Bowron
Lakes Park.
Shortly after arrival at Mc-
Kitrick's Cabins at Bowron
Lake, we waxed our skis and
set out for Indian Point Lake.
The temperature was about
-7°C, bright sunshine, and the
snow was icy. Under these
conditions most applied purple
klister wax for the afternoon
trip. Because of the icy
conditions, the klister started
wearing off fairly quickly.
An application of jackrabbit
johannsen meant snow klister
over the purple klister worked
very well for grip and as
well for glide.
We enjoyed the fabulous
scenery in Bowron Lakes
Park, and wondered about the
significance of the cracking of
ice on Indian Point Lake. The
ice cracked with a terrific
sound, similar to gun shots, as
we skied across the lake.
The next day the weather
was still the same, bright sunshine
on a cloudless day. Since
we were going on a full day's
trip under icy snow conditions,
we first applied blue
klister over the special green
base coat before applying purple
klister.
With the blue klister as a
binder, the purple klister worked
well all day.
We drove to Indian Lake,
north of the park. This road is
now in good condition all the
way to the lake. The scenery
at this lake is also impressive
and we skied across the lake,
up an enormous meadow, and
through the bush towards a
burn on a hillside northeast of
the lake.
The trek through the bush
proved trickier than we had
anticipated, and by the time
we reached McKitrick Creek,
we decided to turn around.
The snowpack in the mountains
around Barkerville-Bowron
Lakes Park is not quite
firm, and the ski-touring conditions
are very good.They
should be good until the end of
April.
When you go skiing keep
the following in mind:
• Tell someone where you
are going.
• Turn back in time to
reach home before darkness.
• Be prepared for stormy
weather even if it is a beautiful
sunny morning when you
start. Mountain weather can
change very quickly.
Bantams challenge Peace
The Quesnel Bantam Reps
are just one step away from
competing in the provincial
finals after they defeated
Prince George Kings 7-6 and
10-7 to win the Cariboo Minor
Hockey League between bestof-three
final playoff last
weekend.
The Bantams trailed 6-3
going into the third period in
the first game at Prince
George but stormed back with
three goals to force the game
into overtime.
Then Alan Abercrombie
scored the winner in the
10-minute straight overtime
period at 6:14 from Steve
Chow. Chow was the star of
the game when he scored four
times including the tying goal,
and added two assists.
Coach Bob Taylor said it
was a tight-checking game for
the first two periods hence
the reason for the 6-3 score.
Once Quesnel was allowed to
open up, the game became a
fast-skating affair and that
allowed the Reps to make
their comeback.
" Saturday's game was
"really wide open hockey"
according to Taylor. Dave
ATTEI\iTIG
Purmal led Quesnel's scorers
with three goals.
"We had a bang-up weekend,"
Taylor said. "We upset
everything in Prince George.
We went in there with the
idea that we had to play real
hard hockey.
"I felt that was the game
that broke their back," he
said.
The Bantams now will play
a team from the Peace division,
probably Fort St. John,
in a best-of-three series here
this weekend. Times haven't
been confirmed yet, Taylor
said.
The Pee Wee Reps, perhaps
the team most expected to go
on to the provincials, were cut
short by some sharp goaltending
as Prince George Spruce
Kings came up with 9-6 and
7-4 wins to take the series in
two straight.
The Pee Wees led 5-3 going
into the thrid period in the
first game but Prince George
scored early, shifted the momentum,
and went on to win.
The next game Prince George
led 5-4 with five minutes to
play but Quesnel was frustrated
time and time again by
Pee Wee coach Craig Chambers
said goaltending was the
