WORLD’S STEEPEST COGWHEEL RAILWAY
For many people engineer Eduard Locher was crazy when he
put forward the idea of building a railway up to Mount Pilatus
in the 19th century. But the 4618 m long stretch of railway was
opened in 1889 (steam operation until 1937) and with its 48 %
gradient is still the steepest cogwheel railway in the world.
This was achieved by the brilliantly innovative construction
of two horizontally revolving cogwheels.
GOLDEN ROUND TRIP
From May to October experience the assorted delights of
Lucerne’s landmark mountain courtesy of the Golden Round
Trip – a half-day or whole-day excursion involving a boat trip,
gondolas.
FUN & ACTION
the great outdoors – all year round. Experience being part of
a roping party in Central Switzerland’s biggest rope park,
or enjoy the thrills of Switzerland’s longest summer toboggan
run.
WALKING/HIKING
Embark on a breathtaking voyage of discovery: put your best
foot forward on trails offering everything from easy to alpine.
MYTHS & LEGENDS
From time immemorial, the rugged cliffs high above Lucerne
have been shrouded in mysterious myths and legends. People
in the Middle Ages believed that a dragon with healing
powers and spirits inhabited the rocky crevices. It was
also said that the ancient Lake Pilatus harbored the restless
soul of none other than the Roman Prefect, Pontius Pilate –
now at peace. That explains why ascents of the Pilatus were
forbidden for a very long time. Cursed be they, it was thought,
who disturb the Pilatus!
FAUNA & FLORA
The alpine ibex on Mount Pilatus are popular tourist attractions.
There have been ibexes on the Pilatus for more than
40 years. The waymarked flower trail between Pilatus Kulm
and Tomlishorn takes you past upwards of 100 flowers, all
labeled.
The entirely renovated Hotel Pilatus-Kulm
offers a blend of historical ambience and contemporary
comfort.
Mount Pilatus offers spectacular views of
Lucerne Bay.
A trip on Mount Pilatus involving the cogwheel
railway or various cableways is an experience
not to be missed.
