If you remember Civil War history lessons, the abolitionists were passionate antislavery activists who started with a peaceful movement that became a violent struggle. The PBS production got legs four years ago and started production in April 2011. It brings to life the rich histories of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown, and famous actors take the lead roles in this unique three-part presentation that traces history from 1820 to 1854 and beyond. “To me, this is really a story of the first civil rights movement,” she says. “These are incredibly brave people who jeopardized their reputations to change history.” “The abolitionists were often looked at as a fanatical movement, but they started as people who were very optimistic at first,” she says. “The characters allow you to see the larger story. At left, a photograph of William Lloyd Garrison. far left: Richard Brooks as escaped slave and abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass. involved and historical diaries, but the story is character driven, and the cast embraced the dramatic sequences. “We learned that it was a lifelong dream for Richard Hooks to play Frederick Douglass,” she says. American history would be very different without abolitionists, Grimberg says. “This has a tremendous impact on history, and I’m very proud that we could bring it to people’s attention.” Some of the most memorable moments in the production represent real historical accounts that come to life with emotional impact. One such moment that was particularly memorable to Grimberg was the wedding in which Frederick Douglass does as much for women’s rights as civil rights. “He refuses to take his legal rights over his wife. It was very progressive,” Grimberg says. The film also details the lives of slave women who were separated from their children — a heartbreaking habit. Another exchange that Grimberg found memorable was a meeting between Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison. “The actors did a really good job of humanizing these two men. “They were reaching out to each other, and they realized they had the same concerns and very real understanding of abandonment,” she says. Who’s who in “The Abolitionists”: Angelina Grimké, daughter of a wealthy plantation family, moves north and becomes involved in the movement. Jeanine Serralles, who has appeared in The Good Wife and Sex and the City, plays Grimké. William Lloyd Garrison, a peaceful activist, who founded the newspaper The Liberator, became a powerful and vocal anti-slavery leader. Neal Huff, who starred in numerous films, plays Garrison. Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave becomes a powerful speaker against slavery. Douglass escaped to England and later returned to the U.S. as a free man, who started his own antislavery paper, angering Garrison. Richard Brooks, who played Assistant District Attorney Paul Robinette on NBC’s Law & Order, plays Douglass. Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of “UncleTom’s Cabin,” witnessed the cruelty of slavery and put her horror into words that open the eyes of thousands of readers. Kate Lyn Sheil, who starred in Somebody Up There Likes Me and other films, plays Stowe. John Brown takes the peaceful abolitionist movement to a more violent level to free the slaves. T. Ryder Smith, a veteran of Blue Bloods and Law & Order: SVU. plays Brown. On the 18th, Independent Lens will present The Powerbroker: Whitney Young’s Fight for Civil Rights. Young may have been this nation’s most significant advocate for civil rights, and this biopic gives new insight into the turbulent 1960s. On the 11th, it will present Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. This film visits ten countries, examining sex trafficking and gender-based violence and their solutions. We know you’ll love American Experience’s line up this month.
