Stephen paused again, and in the silence of<br />

the ship he heard Martin playing his viola in<br />

his cabin opening off the gunroom: an ascending<br />

scale, true enough, then coming<br />

down, slower, more hesitant and ending in a<br />

prolonged, slightly false, B flat, infinitely sad.
