MEASURE 6 RESTRICTED USE OF PESTICIDES AND FERTILISERS This measure will protect water resources and habitats for flora and fauna, by restricting the use of pesticides and fertilisers near field boundaries, ponds, streams and wells. You must do the following things and any other works your planner includes in your plan. ● Apply fertilisers and manures in accordance with Measure 1. ● Do not apply pesticides— ✍ within 1.5 metres of field boundaries and hedgerows on both grassland and tillage. ✍ within 1.5 metres of watercourses and waterbodies on grassland. ✍ within 3 metres of watercourses and waterbodies on tillage area. ✍ within 2 metres of wells and boreholes on both grassland and tillage. ● Adopt spraying techniques to prevent drift. ● Spot-treat noxious weeds with a suitable herbicide if it is specified in your plan. ● Selective herbicides may be used to control weeds when establishing hedgerows or planting trees and shrubs if it is specified in your plan. ● Precautions in the use of Pesticides: ✍ Pesticides must be applied as recommended. Mixing must always be carefully done away from wells and watercourses. Account must be taken of wind speed and direction at the time of spraying, to ensure that surface waters are not contaminated. ✍ Field margins are important wildlife habitats and they must not be contaminated either by direct application or from spray drifting. ✍ Take care that only the amount of chemical required is mixed. If there is some left over, it must be disposed of as directed by the manufacturer. ✍ Chemical containers must be washed in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations and disposed of in accordance with the requirements of the Local Authority Waste Management Plan. FARMER’S HANDBOOK FOR REPS 4 24 MEASURE 7 ESTABLISH BIODIVERSITY BUFFER STRIPS SURROUNDING FEATURES OF HISTORICAL & ARCHAEOLOGICAL INTEREST The landscape of Ireland contains an important record of Irish history — a rich heritage of historical and archaeological monuments. Mechanised farming practices and changes in land use are threats to this ancient landscape. This measure will provide biodiversity buffer strips around features of historical and archaeological interest which will contribute to the conservation of these sites. All sites recorded on the Register of Monuments & Places even where not visable must be protected by buffer strips. You must do the following things and any other works your planner includes in your plan. ● Retain all monuments and archaeological features identified in your plan. ● Do not damage monuments by using heavy machinery in their vicinity. ● In grassland, establish a 20 metre buffer strip around the feature. ● In tillage fields, establish an uncultivated and unsown margin of 5 metres around the feature. ● Activities such as ground disturbance, excavation, building, afforestation or storage are not permitted within the buffer strip. ● If the feature requires protection, light temporary fencing or marker posts can be used. ● Continuous movement of animals over earthwork features or the overwintering of animals must not be allowed in these areas. ● Materials of any type cannot be burned or dumped on such sites. MEASURE 7 OPTIONS Option 7A – Increased Buffer Margins for Archaeological and Historical Features This option will further enhance biodiversity surrounding these features and increase the protection of these features. You must maintain a minimum biodiversity buffer strip of 30 metres in grassland and 7.5 metres in tillage land from all sites and features identified in your plan. The conditions of Measure 7 apply on the increased biodiversity buffer strip.
