Letter from the Rector:
Dear friends,
What a year this is turning out to be. The Queen celebrating a Diamond Jubilee (the
only monarch who will do so in most of our lifetimes), and now we have the Olympics
in the UK to look forward to and the torch coming to Woodstock, we have had one of
the warmest Marchs on record and the wettest April, the worlds finances are a disaster
and the Arab spring continues. Not bad given we have only just arrived in July!
We have already, this year, experienced some happy events, some sad, some difficult,
some frustrating.
But I wonder what this year will be remembered for? Perhaps it is too early to say, but
for us in the UK I wouldn't be surprised if the thing we remember most in years to
come is the Olympics. I may be wrong - for some of you who will do anything to avoid
sport - I probably will be wrong.
But love it or hate it the Olympics is a very special event for our country to host.
I was surprised to learn the other day what the values of the Olympics are. They are:
Respect
Excellence
Friendship
I was pleasantly surprised to learn about these values. If you had asked me before if I
knew what the values were, I might have guessed excellence, but I don't think I would
have guessed respect or friendship. I've never really thought that there is much more to
the Olympics than sport, but now I know respect and friendship are also very
important.
I almost think that such values would be good for us to have - I would of course also
want to include something about God!, but what great values for life.
FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL - POINTS FROM THE
MEETING HELD ON 11th JUNE 2012
Pye Homes’ proposal for Affordable Housing in Freeland
The Parish Council has recently been made aware of plans that Pye Homes are working
on proposals to build a small development containing some affordable and some
commercial housing behind Wroslyn Road with an access through the wood at the end
of Church View/The Blowings. As part of the proposal, Pye Homes also indicated that
they would give the Parish Council £200,000 for village infrastructure (such as building
the CRF or other purposes) besides that required under section 106 of the Town and
Country Planning Act 1990.
The proposals, which are still at a very early and fluid stage, were presented on behalf
of Pye Homes to the Council at the June meeting. Over 30 residents also attended the
presentation, and questions were put to Pye Homes and their agents. Some of the
main concerns raised at the meeting were about the access road through the woods
and the increased traffic through Church View, as well as pressure on other services
such as the school.
A public exhibition on behalf of Pye Homes will be taking place in Freeland Hall on
Saturday 7 th July between 8.30am and 12.30pm. All residents are invited to attend
and inspect the proposals. There will also be an opportunity to ask any questions,
complete questionnaires and feedback their views to WODC planners who will
ultimately make the decision as to whether or not this development can go ahead.
Jubilee Fun Day
The Parish Council would like to pass on their sincere thanks and appreciation to
Ria Lay and the Jubilee team who led the organisation of the Freeland Jubilee Fun Day.
The day was a huge success, a fantastic event with activities and interests for a wide age
range. There was a superb atmosphere and it was a shining example of a village really
coming together as a team to organise what was a most enjoyable afternoon.
Play Park
The Council are pleased to advise that the current play park equipment has now been
installed and, as I write this, the installation of the wet pour safety surface has begun. It
is hoped that by the time this article is printed the play park will be open and available
for use, with on-going work to improve the surrounding area being undertaken later in
the year.
OxOnline – Broadband survey
OxOnline, a leading partnership supported by all six local authorities in Oxfordshire,
is a driving force behind bringing better, faster broadband to Oxfordshire, with
anticipated speeds of up to 24Mb by 2015. They are launching a new broadband
community toolkit and want to obtain views from local residents and businesses
by asking them to complete a new broadband survey online that will only take a few
minutes to complete at
http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/content/have-your-say-broadband-plan
The survey can also be accessed via the Freeland Village Website at
contact either Hugh Dalton (881742) orRev.DavidTyler(881270). Many thanks.
FREELAND GARDENING CLUB
What changeable weather our gardens have had to cope with this year. First it was
drought and then copious rain!. At least everywhere looks lush and green.
The meeting on 28 th May was given by Philip Aubury on the subject of ‘Garden Ponds
and Water Features’. He explained the full process of constructing a pond in great
detail and showed a few slides to illustrate his work. He is an excellent speaker, very
knowledgeable and interesting to listen to.
A familiar and amusing speaker is with us on Monday 25 th June at 7.30pm in Freeland
Hall. Bob Brown who runs Cotswold Garden Flowers, a Nursery near Evesham has
been to our Gardening Club on many occasions and usually brings an array of
interesting plants for sale. His subject this time is one which many gardeners find a
problem – namely ‘So Many Plants, so Little Space!’. Many gardeners cannot resist
buying one more tempting specimen where plants are concerned, but somehow find a
home for them! There are sure to be a few plants we simply must have amongst the
ones that Bob will bring!
Bob Brown also writes very informative articles monthly in the Which? Gardening
magazine.
We hope the weather will have improved for the summer day visit to Loseley Park in
Surrey on Sunday 24 th June. This is a lovely garden and should at this time of year be
full of colour.
The Plant Sale and children’s competitions at the Jubilee celebrations on 4 th June were a
great success. Thank you to everyone who provided plants to sell. The Gardening
Club would like to congratulate all the Jubilee Committee for organising such a superb
afternoon with something for everyone. What a great village occasion it was.
The Gardening Club meets on the 4 th Monday of each month (unless there is a Bank
Holiday) at 7:30pm in Freeland Hall. The next meeting is on the 23rd July. There is a
Bring and Buy Plant Sale at each meeting. Visitors at £3 a meeting and new members
are very welcome.
For any further information about the Gardening Club please contact Ray and Jill Evans
at 99 Wroslyn Rd or ring 881420. Janet Dalton
freeland diamond jubilee
fun day
The general consensus seems to be that Freeland
Jubilee Fun Day was a great success it certainly
went way beyond our expectations. Many people
contributed to the success of the event and we
would like to express OUR HEARTFELT THANKS to
everyone who helped with setting up and taking
down of marquees and exhibitions, putting on
events, donating, sponsoring, making and selling
items and contributing to the tombola.
Above all we would like to thank everyone who
came and joined in with all that was on offer. After
all without you there would not have been a FUN
DAY! The weather also had an important part to
play and it was great that the sun came out for us!
It is events like this that bring out the true
community spirit. Long may it last and we hope
there will be many more ideas and events to make
use of our wonderful new Village Hall.
Although the day was not organised as a fund
raising event, we have raised £3655.85 for the CRF!
FREELAND ORCHESTRA & WOW CONCERT - Friday 6th July
All villagers are invited to our Summer concert. Freeland Orchestra will be playing a
variety of mostly well-known pieces by Schubert, Bizet, Holst, Tchaikovsky and others.
West Oxfordshire Winds will round off the concert with music from the Wizard of
Oz and some summer-themed favourites. The concert will be at Eynsham Village Hall,
Back Lane at 7.30pm on 6th July and admission is FREE!
During July we continue with the theme ‘Splish Splash’. The
children will be exploring lots of water related activities. We will
be discussing holidays and the sea side and combining this with
some music and singing. In addition to this we will be enjoying
some ever popular cooking activities.
To celebrate the Olympics the pre-school and F1 class will be
organising some joint activities in the garden.
This is the last term at Pre-school for some of the children as they will be moving on
into F1 in September. To celebrate their time with us at pre-school we will be holding a
leaver’s party and graduation ceremony at the end of term.
Forest School continues on a Friday and the children will be continuing the theme of
water in the woods in addition to, climbing, den building and bug hunting.
We no longer have any vacancies for this academic year. However, if you would like
your child to attend in September 2012, or beyond, please ring us (between 8.45am and
3.15pm) on 882945, oremailfreelandpg@hotmail.co.uk to give us your details and
help us to plan ahead. Our admissions policy sets out the criteria by which places are
allocated and is available to read on our website: www.freelandpreschool.org
ST MARY’S CHURCH BELL RINGING REPORT
The Oxford Diocesan Guild of Bellringers successfully completed a full peal of 5,040
changes to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This took 2 hours and 10
minutes with no breaks! The last and only other full peal on St Mary’s bells was in
1900. The Jubilee Commemoration Peal rang out around the village and was a
wonderful contribution to the Fun Day. A plaque will be commissioned and displayed
in the tower to record this event. Thank you to all concerned.
Freeland Ringers thoroughly enjoyed welcoming villagers and visitors to the “Have a
Go” session on the 12th May. Hand bells were also generously loaned to us for the
session. A camera was rigged up in the tower to show the bells in action and relayed
onto a laptop. Thank you for the support we received from surrounding bands. We
hope to hold another session in the future – this will be announced in The Grapevine.
In the meantime all those who enjoyed the session (and other interested villagers who
were not able to make the session) and would like to join us on a practice night you
will be most welcome. We hold our practice night on a Monday - 7.30pm until 9pm.
Please ring Melanie McGregor beforehand on 881241.
A quarter peal will be rung on Sunday 1 st July before the Flower Festival Service at
6pm. This will commence at 5pm.
On Saturday 21 st July the bells will be rung at the wedding of Fiona Roberts and Alberto
Cortina-Molina, who are getting married at 1pm.
Finally please note you can see more about Freeland Bell Ringers under the “Special
Interests” section on the village website www.freelandoxon.com
put in by them. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all who came and it was great to see
A big “THANK YOU” to Ria Lay, her committee and all the organisations and people
FREELAND FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS
200 Club Winners - June 2012
1st Prize £25 No. 100 E. Panting
2nd Prize £15 No. 48 C. Taylor
3rd Prize £10 No. 40 D. Claridge
4th Prize £5 No. 159 L. Leach
Another season has finally been completed and the club can be very happy with their
efforts.
Thoughts have now turned to the 2012/13 season which will see the Firsts continue in
the Senior League Premier Division, the Reserves will defend the Clarendon Cup, the
A’s will be playing Witney & District Division 1 football after their title and resulting
promotion, the B’s will look to go one better than this season and achieve a promotion
from their league and the same applies to the Yeoman.
The season finished on a high with the recent news that the Parish Council has secured
a grant for £50,000 for work on the CRF, there is more work to be done, but hopefully
this will open the floodgates for more money to come in.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in the
Diamond Jubilee Fun Run, we were very pleased with the amount of people who
turned up – although the Freeland players were outshone on the day and may be called
into training earlier this coming season!!
A big thank you to Ria and the gang for arranging the whole Diamond Jubilee Fun Day,
it was a great day and nice to see the weather hold out for us. We would also like to
thank everyone for the kind CRF donations that were made on the day.
Finally, it is nearly time again for the Freeland 6-a-side, this will be held down the
playing field on the 4 th August 2012. After the great success of the Diamond Jubilee
Fun Day it would be great to see as many people turn up as possible for a festival of
football. If you are interested in entering a team please check out our website which
will have further information for you – www.freelandfc.co.uk.
Thank you for your support again this season!! One love!!
WEST OXFORDSHIRE CITIZENS ADVICE
BUREAU LAUNCHES ‘Friends of WOCAB’
WOCAB is a local charity, with offices in Witney and Chipping Norton,
which carries out a vital role in providing free financial, benefit and debt
advice to local people.
Last year they helped local people in need realise more than £1m additional income –
money which gets ploughed back into the local economy. WOCAB’s work doesn’t just
help individuals, there’s a business benefit as well. But in the current financial climate
much of what they do is at risk.
By becoming a Friend of WOCAB you can support us to help people in our area
reduce their worries and get their lives back on track. Your gift will help us keep on
doing this – for example, while it costs more than £1,000 to train a new volunteer
advisor, even a gift of £25 will help us to visit a housebound client, or represent
someone in court.
If you want to become a Friend of WOCAB you can contact the Bureau by emailing
bureau@wocab.org.uk, downloading our Friends of WOCAB brochure from
www.caox.org.uk, calling us on 08444 111 444, or by popping into our offices at
The Old Print House, Marlborough Lane, Witney, OX28 6DY
or 31 High Street, Chipping Norton, OX7 5AD.
WOCAB’s registered charity number is 1092539, and they are entirely self-supporting.
