Manufactured in Switzerland, RALI handplanes are a market
force in Europe however here in Australia they have a
confused image. In more traditional circles they are viewed
as a DIY gimmick due to their European styling and double
sided quick-change blade design. However these planes are
proven tools that are simple, easy to use and a cinch to setup.
When looking at RALI planes consider the purpose of the plane your looking to purchase. They have an excellent
selection to suit a variety of applications. R
The Jack style plane (225mm long 60mm wide with a 48mm blade) with chip breaker adjustment is a general
all rounder hence the term ‘Jack of all trades’.
The Block plane (120mm long 55mm wide with a 48mm blade) is most suited to small scale stock removal
usually when fitting cupboards, drawers and other minor adjustments to oversized material.
The Rebate plane (130mm long 30mm wide with a 31mm blade) is as the title states, for removing material
up to a shoulder. The fence allows this to be easily and accurately achieved.
The Apron plane (115mm long 35mm wide with a 31mm blade) is perfect for arrising of both timber and laminates
and also incorporates a spare blade clip.
The PRO series is an extended range that includes all the previously mentioned planes except the apron. The improvement
in the pro series is that they have laminated steel soles giving the weight sought after when dealing
with more dense or “cranky” timbers.
The PRO rebate, large rebate and bullnose planes all have an attractive nickel plating on the plane body which
gives extreme resistance to corrosion. RALI also have specialist planes like the glue trimmer, which is designed
with panel glue lines in mind. This plane has a centre recess running the length of the plane with a blade that
can extend to the surface leaving perfect glue free finishes.
Consider the RALI when you’re weighing up your next plane purchase. What work do you hope to do, how will
you sharpen your tools, frequency with which planes will be used, how time effects
your work?
These tools are often overlooked due to their European styling and nontraditional
blade mechanism but don’t discount these wonderful tools
based on those factors. RALI are certainly durable, reliable and accurate

Just Scraping By
Cabinet scrapers, their maintenance & use.
Cabinet scrapers are one of the most effective tools in your
workshop, when tuned properly, they are capable of producing
a lustrous finish on most timbers. It is hard to imagine how such a
simple and inexpensive tool can make such an impact on the quality
of your woodworking.
A cabinet scraper is a piece of flat steel, that when sharpened
correctly will produce fine shavings. It may also be used to
smooth hard timber with difficult grain that is subject to tearout or
has fiddleback. It will remove machining marks and even out marks
left by the sweep of a hand plane. For a scraper to be truly effective, it
must be sharpened with a hook or burr. This is achieved using a burnisher
but before the hook you need to prepare the edge.

Biscuit joinery has revolutionised the woodworking industry.

You have just unpacked your latest purchase... a beautiful
Carba−Tec® 15" thicknesser... cast aside the unread manual

The Classic
Footstool
In the last issue of FOCUS, Stuart Lees
introduced you to the Kreg K4 Pocket Hole Jig, and sang the praises of
pocket hole joinery. Its simplicity and strength are two (of the many) advantges
over any other non-integral joint.
Our project this month, is a
handy little footstool, which is a
great addition to any home. In
the kitchen (for gaining access to that
‘scary’ back of the pantry), in the
laundry, bathroom or even...the workshop.
The design is such that it can be
modified to form many other furniture
pieces, by changing the dimensions.
It could just as easily make
a coffee table, or if you get adventurous,
think BIG and make a dining
table. Remember, it is just a
matter of joining the thinner panels
together to make wider panels,
for wider jobs.
We will be producing all our
joints with the Kreg K4 pocket
hole jig, but there are many other pocket hole
jigs in the Kreg range, that all could work just
as effectively, but may require a few extra
steps.
