Welcome to the UCDS Auction 2012: The 100 Years Tour. 

What we can see this evening is the result of many 

months of dazzling vision, intense collaboration and 

clever procurement. I am inspired by so many of you in our 

community who have contributed your precious time and 

talent, thank you! We are fortunate once again this year 

to have the exceptional leadership of Auction Chair Dina 

Wampold. My sincere gratitude goes to Dina and to each of 

our committee chairs. 

Each year, proceeds from the auction support major 

initiatives that directly benefit our students, our 

professional culture for faculty, and access for our families. 

Auction proceeds are responsible for the recent addition 

of whiteboards and technology carts you see in every 

classroom. Prior auctions have also ensured the success 

of our long-range strategy to fund the people who enrich 

our community, our teachers and families. 

Last year, we rolled out a new two-year objective: the 

re-imagination of our playground. A group of our most 

experienced teachers investigated the role of play in 

development and learning, and they facilitated lively 

discussions with the entire faculty. Together, we have 

determined how to amp up our outdoor space to ensure 

that recess continues to play a truly meaningful role in 

our curriculum. The first part of this major playground 

transformation was completed last summer with the 

addition of our new sport court and giant sandbox. The 

largest part of the project that still remains includes a turf 

field, a new water feature, and large trees interspersed 

throughout. By raising your bid card this evening, you will 

also have an opportunity to continue our commitment to 

fund teacher excellence and access for families through 

financial aid. 

We are privileged all of you were able to join us tonight. 

To everyone who volunteered and generously donated, we 

are enormously thankful. Together we can continue to 

create the electrifying learning spaces and inspiring 

challenges our children enjoy everyday.

Welcome to the UCDS 2012 Auction: 

The 100 Years Tour! 

Funding Playgrounds and Teacher Excellence 

March 10, 2012 is an evening to celebrate UCDS’s 

great community of students, faculty, administrators 

and parents. We will also be raising money to 

complete our two year funding initiative for 

Playgrounds and Teacher Excellence. 

A close look at the two funding initiatives shows how 

intertwined they are. The Teacher Excellence Fund 

provides educational opportunities for all of our 

teachers. One of the many opportunities this fund 

provides for our teachers is the annual Experienced 

Teacher Cohort. The funds from Teacher Excellence 

allow this group to be inspired by a topic, research 

the topic and use the results of the research to 

improve the education of our children. A recent topic 

explored by the group was the question “What are the 

developmental milestones and stages of children’s 

play?” The Experienced Teacher Cohort’s embarked 

on a research adventure that resulted in unexpected 

findings about how kids actually play and how their 

development is enhanced (or not) by our current 

playground. Those findings were put to use in the 

Playground re-design and construction. Now instead 

of a parking lot where students play on, UCDS will 

have one-of-a-kind playground that allows students 

to explore life through play. 

In the end, our kids benefit from both initiatives. Not 

only do they get a cutting-edge playground they also 

get teachers who feel inspired, challenged and valued. 

Putting together a fundraising event of this 

magnitude takes the support and dedication from 

everyone in the school. Whether you chaired a 

committee, volunteered on a committee, donated an 

item or plan to attend the auction, this evening could 

not happen without your participation. Thank you to 

everyone who contributed to support the vision for 

this endeavor. 

Finally, March 10th is also an evening to acknowledge 

a very important milestone for UCDS, it’s 100 year 

birthday! So let’s raise a glass-and a paddle-in 

celebration!

funding initiatiVes: 

Your generosity at the 2011 Auction funded the first 

elements of the bold and exciting redesign of the 

school’s playgrounds, with the installation of the 

sandbox and basketball court—both of which have 

been huge hits! With funds from the 2012 Auction, 

we will be able to continue our quest: to turn the 

parking lot kids play on into a play park cars park on 

twice a day. By the fall of the 2012-2013 school year, 

we will be greeted by a large turf-covered area and 

equipment for climbing and building. Areas that were 

previously “off limits” are being reclaimed and turned 

into places for socializing and creative play. Trees 

will be added that will make the playground feel more 

like a park. 

The vision for the playground was made possible by 

our teachers’ thoughtful assessment and research 

on how kids play. This is just one of the ways the 

Teacher Excellence Fund has a direct effect on our 

children. The fund supports teachers, students and 

the community as a whole by giving our teachers 

the right tools and opportunities to ask important 

questions and make bold changes. The Auction 

will support the Teacher Excellence Fund and help 

sustain the qualities that have made UCDS so unique 

and amazing for the past 100 years!

Exit to the left. At the stop light take a right onto Edgar 

Martinez Drive. Entrance to the parking garage is on the 

left. To continue onto Showbox SODO, turn left onto 1st 

Avenue South. Showbox SODO will be on your left at 1st and 

Massachusetts – brick building on the left side of the street. 

From i-5 souThBounD: 

Take the Edgar Martinez Drive (164B exit). Turn right at the 

stoplight onto Edgar Martinez Drive. Entrance to the parking

From i-90: 

Take exit 2B on the left for I-5 South/4th Ave South toward

Parking 

From 1st Avenue South, turn onto Edgar Marinez Drive South 

heading East. Entrance to the garage is on the right, just past 

Occidental Avenue South. Parking is $5.00 for the evening 

and is paid by credit card upon entering the lot. 

* Please note that this garage has an entrance off South 

Massachusetts Street just behind the Showbox, however, this 

entrance will not be open during our event. If you come to this 

entrance, please head North on Occidental Avenue South, then turn 

right on Edgar Martinez Drive South to the entrance to the lot. 

BY Bus: 

There is a bus stop at 1st Avenue South and South Atlantic 

Street which is .10 of a mile from the Showbox SoDo.

general rules 

1. Each bidder number is given a Bidpal automated 

bidding device. To bid in the Silent Auction, enter 

your bid using your Bidpal automated bidding 

device. The bidder with the highest bid at the 

end of the Silent Auction wins that item. In the 

Silent Auction, if your bid number is declared 

the highest bid by the Auction official, you must 

purchase that item. In some cases, if you would 

like to guarantee you are the top bidder, you may 

do so buy entering the ‘buy it now’ price so that 

you are declared the automatic winner. 

2. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card 

with the number facing the auctioneer. A bid 

acknowledged by the auctioneer is a legal 

contract to purchase the item. Top bidders 

must pay for their items at the cashier. It is 

not necessary to pay for each item after its 

purchase. Please pay for all your purchases at 

the end of the auction. Bidders who have their 

credit card swiped at registration do not have 

to stand in line at the end of the auction to pay 

for their purchases. Instead, these guests will 

have paid receipts for their purchases delivered 

to them during the course of the auction. Please 

have your credit card swiped when registering. 

3. All purchases are final. There are no exchanges 

or refunds. 

4. Auction items will be awarded to one purchaser 

only. A purchaser who wishes to split the 

payment for an auction item with others must 

collect each payment from the other bidders 

and present full payment to the auction cashier. 

One invoice will be sent to the purchaser. It is up 

to the purchaser to make copies for the other 

bidders who split the payment. 

5. We prefer payment by check payable to UCDS. 

We will also gladly accept Visa, MasterCard, or 

American Express. UCDS is a 501(c)(3) charitable 

organization. Your payments may be tax 

deductible. Check with your financial advisor. 

6. All items not removed from the venue 

immediately after the auction will be stored 

at the Parent Association office. Contact Dina 

Wampold, dinawampold@gmail.com to arrange 

for pickup. 

7. Reservations for trips and vacation 

accommodations must be mutually arranged 

with the donor unless noted. Refunds will not 

be given for travel packages if the purchaser 

cancels the tickets or accommodations. 

8. The auction committee has attempted to 

describe and catalog all items correctly, but all 

items are offered as is. The Parent Association 

neither warrants nor represents, and in no 

event shall be responsible for, the correctness 

of descriptions, genuineness, authorship, 

provenance, or condition of the items. No 

statement made in this catalog or made orally at 

the auction or elsewhere shall be deemed such 

a warranty, representation, or assumption of 

liability. The values listed are estimates only and 

are not warranted for tax purposes or fair market 

value. Items have not been appraised unless 

so noted. 

9. Each person issued a bid number assumes all 

risks and hazards related to the auction and 

items obtained at the auction. Each bidder 

agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising 

therefrom University Child Development School, 

its elected and appointed officials, members 

and employees, and the auctioneer. 

10. After paying the cashier or receiving your 

receipts delivered to your table, the purchaser 

must locate and remove purchases from the 

auction premises. You will be asked to show your 

paid receipt for tangible items at the door at 

departure. 

11. All items expire one year from the date of the

great St.-Emilion and Pomerol. Chocolaty 

cassis notes intermixed with incense, 

licorice, and a hint of black olive are 

present in this wine. When it hits the 

palate, it comes across as very Pomerollike, 

with lushness, full body, and 

opulence. The tannins are sweet, the pH 

high, and the wine gorgeously full, pure, 

dense, and long. It’s a terrific example 

of non-interventionalist winemaking that 

has turned out a beautiful, silky-textured 

wine that should age effortlessly for 

15+ years.

Board of Trustees are committed to 

extending broad access to a UCDS 

education. This includes a need 

blind admissions process, which 

ensures that qualified students have 

the ability to enroll at and continue 

to attend UCDS, regardless of their 

family’s ability to pay tuition. By 

raising your bid card for Financial 

Aid, you join generations of parents 

who have rallied around this goal. 

This year, 66 students and 21% of 

student body are receiving financial 

aid. These funds go beyond tuition 

and often help defray the expense 

of field trips, afterschool clubs, EDP,

student full access to UCDS’s unique

This year you are moving on and in all seriousness we 

can say your time at UCDS has been EPIC. 

You walked in as an enthusiastic half day preschooler. 

Excited to learn, but a little bit afraid of such a big 

space and of loud noises. In Kindergarten you learned 

to ride a bike on the Rainbow Road and finally had 

enough nerve to go down the playground slide! 

It has been so much fun to watch you grow and learn. 

You have successfully become part of the loud noise 

and have not only conquered going down the slide, 

but are jumping off vaults and performing other 

breathtaking feats with your Parkour. 

Axel, you are always curious, optimistic and ready to 

learn, on top of being just a cool guy and a wonderful 

friend to those who know you. Little did we know 

you would not only grow into a big 5th grader we are 

proud of and love like crazy, but also someone we 

admire. 

You are a voracious reader who loves technology, 

ukulele, guitar, and any music. What’s next? We can’t
