was absent in 3 1.4% and 74.8% respectively (Table 8).
2. Localized peripheral visual field defects: In Group II, the most common
peripheral field defects were the inferior altitudinal and inferior nasal -
frequently the former was a relative defect and the latter an absolute defect
in the same eye. In Group I, the commonest defect was the inability to plot
any visual fields because of either complete blindness or extremely poor
visual acuity (Table 9). The various types of localized peripheral visual
field defects at first visit and at the end of follow-up are shown in Table 9.
Some of the eyes had more than one localized peripheral visual field defect.
3. Localized scotomata: In AION the commonest form of scotoma was
the central scotoma. Some of the eyes had more than one scotoma. The
various types of scotomata and their incidence in both Groups is shown in
Table 10.
RESPONSE TO TREATMENT WITH SYSTEMIC
CORTICOSTEROIDS:
GROUP I: Every patient with temporal arteritis was treated with large
doses of systemic corticosteroids to prevent further loss of vision. The re-
sponse of these eyes to the treatment is given in Tables 5, 8, 9 and lo.
GROUP II: Some of the patients of Group II, if seen with an appreciable
optic disc edema at first visit, were treated with systemic corticosteroids.
The effects on visual acuity and visual field defects were evaluated to find
out if systemic corticosteroids in adequate doses have a beneficial effect on
the visual loss.
Visual acuity: The results are shown in Table 11. In the treated group, a
&i-square test established that a significant number of eyes showed im-
provement in visual acuity, (p = 0.004). (Table 11)
