Annual Reports 2009 - 2010
Empowering children and youth with special
needs to realize their full potential
Report from the Board Chair and CEO of KidsAbility
The KidsAbility story is being re-written in fundamental ways and a new story is evolving. For example:
We are aggressively pursuing four new strategic directions: Supporting the Life Journey, Nurturing
a Knowledge Organization, Enhancing Service Delivery, and Identifying and Mobilizing Talent;
We widened our lens on the breadth of services that are financially supported by our Foundation; and
We are developing a client classification system to ensure we utilize our resources in the most effective
manner to benefit clients and families.
In February, the Board of Directors made an important decision to expand the
number and type of services we provide to children in our communities and
to increase our financial sustainability. They conducted a rigorous due diligence
process and received the support of many stakeholders including parents and
government officials. Through a social enterprise model, we will provide fee-based
rehabilitation services to children who are not eligible for government-funded
services. We look forward to this initiative providing more services and enhanced
financial sustainability in our future.
We are equally committed to strengthening the successful partnerships
we established to support our strategic directions including:
Partnership with the McMaster University Medical School in
Kitchener whereby medical students are now receiving training
at all four KidsAbility sites;
Our efforts with leaders of the University of Waterloo School
of Pharmacy;
The KidsAbility Centre of Excellence, which is leading our efforts
to position us as a recognized leader in applied research and best
practices; and
Our support for the Waterloo Region Family Network as an
integral support for parents, a source of education/mentoring
and a “system navigator” for families.
Our most significant benchmark of success is that
we provided services to 4,425 children last year, more
clients than we’ve ever served in one year. Thanks to the
extraordinary efforts of our staff, volunteers, supporters
and partners, we continue to improve the “life journey”
of children with special needs and their families.
Highlights from Client Services
In providing service to over 4,400 children during the past year, KidsAbility Client Services focused on:
1) Enhancing Service Delivery by:
Exploring links with McMaster University Developmental Pediatricians to provide on-site consultations
and follow-up for children at the Waterloo site;
Examining who our clients are, what types of services they need, when they need these services and what
volume of services are needed for a given outcome. This is called the CLASS project;
Expanding the model of family-centered care by extending hours of operation, addressing language
barriers for families, and enhancing our website to provide more information to families; and
Reviewing our service provision by completing a successful accreditation process.
2) Nurturing a Knowledge Organization through:
Our Autism Forum in June co-sponsored by the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy which will
be followed by a second Forum this June featuring both leading researchers and local experts;
Our link with the McMaster Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine with medical students and family
medicine residents in Guelph, Fergus, Cambridge and Waterloo; and
Continuing work with our Centre of Excellence exploring best practices, knowledge sharing, transitions
to school and to the adult environment.
3) Supporting the Life Journey by:
Supporting and then celebrating the Waterloo Family Network as it launched in the community
as an independent entity; and
Partnering with other community organizations to improve services through examples such as the
“Growing Great Kids” in Guelph.
We continue to work towards building a $10 million Endowment, aimed
at providing a necessary source of annual income that will contribute to the longterm
financial stability of KidsAbility. Over $5 million has been pledged
to the Endowment as an investment in our community that will help KidsAbility
meet the needs of local children and their families today and tomorrow.
The KidsAbility Foundation Board of Directors moved forward with some
strategic initiatives that included engaging our current and prospective donors to
seek their valuable insight into the work of the Foundation. The results
of these focus groups will help shape our future fundraising initiatives and
will ensure we are meeting the needs of our donors. Special thanks to all
of the participants and to Paula Stanghetta for donating her time and talents
to facilitate and shape these sessions.
Our annual President’s Reception in December provided us with the opportunity
to honour Elaine Ormston with our prestigious Outstanding Supporter Butterfly
Award for her dedication and support of the Foundation. This award has been
aptly renamed the “Elaine Ormston Outstanding Supporter Butterfly Award” in
recognition of her passion and dedication to our kids.
To the Board of Directors who have served our community over the past year, we
thank you for your leadership and commitment to our mission.
From all of us and especially the kids, we thank each and every one of our donors
for making a difference in the lives of the children and youth who
receive services at KidsAbility.
On to new beginnings
& new successes!...
One of the most memorable times in a teenagers life
is graduation, after such hard work and perseverance you are
ready to move on to bigger and better things! That time is
nearly here for 18 year old Philip Metzger as he approaches his
graduating day at KidsAbility Centre for Child Development.
At birth Philip was diagnosed with hydrocephalus (People with
hydrocephalus have an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal
fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain.)
Philip has made tremendous progress over the last 18 years;
now a full time student at Cameron Heights Collegiate he
is also an enthusiastic participant in the annual Mudpuppy
Chase, enjoys weightlifting, bowling, track 3 skiing and much
more. Philip attributes many of his successes to KidsAbility
including his vastly improved speech and mobility.
“This community needs KidsAbility to give a sense of confidence
and encouragement for kids. You can trust the therapists and
know that they will always be there for you”, Philip comments.
Now that Philip is nearing graduation we can only hope
he will continue to be such a positive advocate for KidsAbility,
and wish him luck in the future!
