colleges; there are also many items on the governance <strong>of</strong>
the university, including several poll books for the various
<strong>of</strong>ficers during the 19th century.
The University <strong>of</strong> Melbourne Library contains
important publications listing the matriculation <strong>of</strong> students
by name, college and year. In addition, there are
biographical lists <strong>of</strong> all known students, graduates and
holders <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fices at the university from earliest times
onwards.
During the last two centuries, considerable changes in
modes <strong>of</strong> public transport involving Cambridge took
place. There is material on stage coaches to and from
various large cities; cargo transport using barges and even
smaller ships from the sea up the rivers to Cambridge;
early railway linkages to and from Cambridge which were
initially serviced by various companies, many <strong>of</strong> which
eventually collapsed or were forced to merge; the
spectacular traffic increase arising from electrification <strong>of</strong>
rail tracks to King’s Cross and Liverpool Street stations in
London and also elsewhere during the last quarter <strong>of</strong> this
century. There is also material on the city’s internal
transportation system — horse coaches, electric trams, and
buses; as well as the motor coach/bus systems linking
Cambridge with nearby villages and more distant towns.
As would be expected, books form a very prominent
feature in terms <strong>of</strong> manuscripts and published books held
inside both university and college libraries. The University
<strong>of</strong> Melbourne Library possesses an extensive range <strong>of</strong>
published catalogues <strong>of</strong> manuscripts and printed books.
Though some <strong>of</strong> these published catalogues have become,
or are gradually becoming, obsolete with the introduction
<strong>of</strong> computerised catalogues, a study <strong>of</strong> their contents
clearly indicates the richness and specialisation <strong>of</strong> these
collections <strong>of</strong> the university and colleges.
The evolution, editorial, and business activities as well
as the housing <strong>of</strong> the Cambridge University Press, the
internationally known publishing firm, are described in a
number <strong>of</strong> important publications.
An outstanding feature <strong>of</strong> the Cambridge collection is
the exceptionally fine range and quality <strong>of</strong> illustrated
material on the topography <strong>of</strong> the town and county, as
drawings, engravings, aquatints, coloured lithographs,
particularly before 1920.There are important black and
white or colour illustrations in various sizes by notable
artists including Loggan, the Harradens, the Storers,
Mason, Dyer, among many others. Plans are in hand for a
special catalogue to list under various headings these
illustrations, particularly those pre-1920, to be published by
the University <strong>of</strong> Melbourne Library in 1999.
The University <strong>of</strong> Melbourne Library is the only
Australian library to possess the rare Loggan 1st edition
(1690) and the even rarer 2nd edition (1715), both <strong>of</strong>
which have fine contemporary tooled leather covers.
Academic attire, an extremely important feature <strong>of</strong>
university life during the last 300 years, is displayed in
woodcuts, engravings, and lithographs from 1690 onwards,
some in colour. These pictures show how some colleges
created distinctive styles <strong>of</strong> gowns which their
undergraduate members were expected to wear.
Many items, both descriptive and pictorial, cover the
built environment. The depiction <strong>of</strong> various architectural
styles within the city provide a vivid picture <strong>of</strong> past,
