Obviously, college histories are a strength <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
collecti<strong>on</strong>, as are general histories <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>University</strong>.There<br />
are also str<strong>on</strong>g holdings relating specifically to the<br />
governance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>University</strong>, including poll books for the<br />
electi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> various <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers during the 19th century.The<br />
Calendar is held almost complete from 1797 to 1865 and<br />
it was a special joy to discover the 1808 editi<strong>on</strong> in the<br />
large geology collecti<strong>on</strong> menti<strong>on</strong>ed earlier, as this is <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
the three issues lacking from Dr Gorman’s set.<br />
There are over two dozen histories <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> various clubs<br />
and societies, with a heavy c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the rowing<br />
clubs, nine or ten books <strong>on</strong> the <strong>Cambridge</strong> spies and half a<br />
dozen <strong>on</strong> academic dress.<br />
The built envir<strong>on</strong>ment is extremely well-covered, with<br />
books <strong>on</strong> the architecture <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> specific buildings and<br />
colleges, as well as others <strong>on</strong> specific architectural features<br />
displayed over a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sites within the <strong>University</strong> and<br />
the town.This aspect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the collecti<strong>on</strong> is enhanced by the<br />
presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> reports <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> local government instrumentalities,<br />
inquiries into various aspects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> planning and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong><br />
and reports from the <strong>Cambridge</strong> Preservati<strong>on</strong> Society.<br />
There are several flora <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Cambridge</strong>shire as well as general<br />
and specific histories and descripti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Cambridge</strong><br />
gardens. Histories and detailed descripti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> churches<br />
and chapels abound, as do works <strong>on</strong> the antiquities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<strong>Cambridge</strong>shire, including archaeological reports.<br />
The college histories and various registers provide a<br />
rich biographical resource, which is expanded by large<br />
numbers <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> books <strong>on</strong>, for example physics and physicists at<br />
<strong>Cambridge</strong>, the <strong>Cambridge</strong> apostles and several works <strong>on</strong><br />
publishing and bookselling in <strong>Cambridge</strong>, dealing not <strong>on</strong>ly<br />
with the <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>University</strong> Press, but also with Heffers<br />
and Gustave David. And, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> course, there are several dozen<br />
general pictorial books and maps as well as a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
directories such as Kelly’s Directory <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Cambridge</strong>shire.<br />
The questi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> what for want <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a better term we call<br />
‘creative literature’ — poems, plays and novels, has been<br />
the subject <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> much discussi<strong>on</strong> between Dr Gorman and<br />
myself. In general, the collecti<strong>on</strong> includes such material if<br />
<strong>Cambridge</strong> is an integral part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the work but not if the<br />
author just happens to be a <strong>Cambridge</strong> man or woman. As<br />
an example, C.P. Snow’s The masters,The light and the dark<br />
and The affair are all included, while his L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong> novels are<br />
not; Elizabeth George’s For the sake <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Elena is included; the<br />
rest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her books are not.<br />
Finding novels set in <strong>Cambridge</strong> has proved interesting<br />
and I was fortunate while I was <strong>on</strong> leave to go into Heffers<br />
bookshop last October when they had mounted a display<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ‘<strong>Cambridge</strong> Crime’. I was able to pick up almost a<br />
dozen titles not previously held in the <strong>Cambridge</strong><br />
Collecti<strong>on</strong> and since the <strong>University</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Melbourne</strong> (unlike<br />
Sydney) does not specialise in crime novels, they were not<br />
already held in the general collecti<strong>on</strong>.These nicely<br />
supplement the half dozen or so already in the <strong>Cambridge</strong><br />
Collecti<strong>on</strong> and give a pleasingly circular illustrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its possible uses. Presumably any<strong>on</strong>e wishing to write a<br />
<strong>Cambridge</strong> mystery would find valuable factual<br />
informati<strong>on</strong> there.<br />
Let us finish with a descripti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a couple <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
more unusual items in the <strong>Cambridge</strong> Collecti<strong>on</strong>.They are<br />
both manuscripts. We are, incidentally, not trying to build a<br />
collecti<strong>on</strong> in competiti<strong>on</strong> with the <strong>Cambridge</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
