stimulating and fulfilling as well as being academically<br />

successful. He retained from his years there an enormous<br />

affecti<strong>on</strong> for and interest in the <strong>University</strong> and his own<br />

college, Corpus Christi in particular, affecti<strong>on</strong> and interest<br />

which led him to build a collecti<strong>on</strong>, which, when<br />

combined with the pre-existing holdings <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>University</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Melbourne</strong> <strong>Library</strong>, form a resource unparalleled in this<br />

country. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Books</str<strong>on</strong>g> and pictures had always been important to<br />

him and in his collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> material relating to<br />

<strong>Cambridge</strong> he dem<strong>on</strong>strates a real discernment, coupled<br />

with the tenacity, not to say obsessi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the true collector.<br />

Although this paper is c<strong>on</strong>cerned mainly with the<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> printed material bought from Pierre Gorman,<br />

the collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pictorial representati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Cambridge</strong>,<br />

which he gave to the <strong>University</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Melbourne</strong> <strong>Library</strong> 12<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths after we had bought his books, is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> equal<br />

importance. It includes engravings, prints, maps and other<br />

representati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the county, town and <strong>University</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Cambridge</strong>, but its special and excepti<strong>on</strong>al strength is in<br />

depicti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dr Gorman’s beloved Corpus Christi<br />

College. Indeed, Pierre Gorman went so far as to<br />

commissi<strong>on</strong> a series <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> watercolours by Derek Abel <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> parts<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the College which he believed had either never been<br />

painted or not depicted satisfactorily.The collecti<strong>on</strong> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

enormous interest to students <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> architecture, art history<br />

and printing history as well as to any<strong>on</strong>e simply seeking a<br />

picture <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a particular aspect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the built envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<strong>Cambridge</strong>.<br />

As neither the <strong>University</strong> <strong>Library</strong> nor the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

Museum <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Art had the space to display so many art works<br />

it is a special pleasure that over 65 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> them are now<br />

displayed in the Graduate Centre <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the <strong>University</strong>, in the<br />

1888 building <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the former <strong>Melbourne</strong> Teachers’ College.<br />

Some are in the recently dedicated Pierre Gorman Room,<br />

others in various parts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the building.<br />

Dr Gorman had already listed his book collecti<strong>on</strong><br />

when he <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered it to the <strong>Library</strong>. Once we agreed to<br />

purchase the 600 or so titles, he set about creating a<br />

complete bibliographical listing which would encompass<br />

the <strong>Library</strong>’s total resources <strong>on</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>.The 4th editi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Books</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> was published in 1997, in time for<br />

the meeting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Australasian Modern British Historians<br />

Associati<strong>on</strong> in Perth. It is an impressive document — an<br />

author listing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> about 1,500 titles, giving the locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

each within the <strong>Library</strong>’s many collecti<strong>on</strong>s. Compilati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

the catalogue has involved checking all the <strong>Library</strong>’s<br />

various catalogues, both machine-based and <strong>on</strong> cards and<br />

Dr Gorman has pers<strong>on</strong>ally inspected almost every item,<br />

which in turn has involved trips to 20–odd locati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Dr Gorman is manipulating this listing to produce a<br />

versi<strong>on</strong> arranged by year <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> publicati<strong>on</strong>. An earlier versi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this proved very useful to people wishing to discover<br />

quickly which editi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a work are held, or, more<br />

generally, the chr<strong>on</strong>ological spread <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the collecti<strong>on</strong>.A<br />

third versi<strong>on</strong>, by subject, is also in course <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

And there’s more.The <strong>University</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>Melbourne</strong><br />

<strong>Library</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> course, c<strong>on</strong>tinues to buy new books <strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>Cambridge</strong> and Dr Gorman, having sold us the original<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong> at a price which could <strong>on</strong>ly be described as<br />

advantageous to the purchaser, has c<strong>on</strong>tinued to present<br />

scarce, valuable and interesting items to us. In additi<strong>on</strong>, we<br />

have discovered, in an extensive private library <strong>on</strong> geology<br />
