BIOGRAPHY OF RUSSELL M. MAGNAGHI
Born (1943) and raised in San Francisco, California, I attended the University of San Francisco
where I received the B.A. in 1965. I went onto the St. Louis University and received the M.A.
(1967) and the Ph.D. (1970). I came to Marquette on a visit and later was hired and joined the
faculty at Northern Michigan University in 1969. Beginning in 1974 I began to focus on regional
history and in the early 1980s began to study the Italians in the Upper Peninsula. I have also
found time to develop one of the first courses on the history of Native Americans in a state
university. My interest and passion has been the comparative history of the Americas as well. I
have also found time to research and write over 200 articles and monographs and present a
similar number of papers and radio programs. In recent years I have been appointed University
Historian (1994) and Director of the Center for Upper Peninsula Studies (1996 and 2006). Since
2002 I have been interim head of the Departments of History and Philosophy. I have also
worked with the community in a number of capacities using my historical expertise and people
skills. I have co-edited the Discovering the Peoples of Michigan Series of Michigan State
University Press since 2003. It has been a great 30 years working at Northern Michigan
University.
