The USOC and <strong>the</strong> administration at <strong>the</strong> USOEC would like to<br />

welcome you to <strong>the</strong> United States Olympic Education Center<br />

and our 27th year of operation and service to <strong>the</strong> Olympic<br />

ideals.<br />

The many rules and regulations stated in this <strong>handbook</strong> are<br />

designed to make your stay with us as productive as possible.<br />

The USOEC staff is here to ensure that your athletic and educational goals are met. We<br />

encourage you to become acquainted and maintain an open line of communication with us.<br />

USOEC’s Mission Statement<br />

The United States Olympic Education Center uses all available resources at NMU to challenge its<br />

student athletes to think independently, develop a lifelong appreciation for learning, acquire career<br />

skills, and become productive citizens and ambassadors for our country, while also providing <strong>the</strong> worldclass<br />

facilities and support services that <strong>the</strong>se athletes need in order to become Olympic Champions.<br />

RESIDENCY STANDARDS &<br />

THE ROLES OF ORGANIZATIONS<br />

Residency in <strong>the</strong> U.S. Olympic Education Center program is designed for athletes who have both <strong>the</strong> ability<br />

and desire to be Olympic champions and successful students. To ensure adherence to stringent athletic and<br />

academic performance standards, periodic evaluations will be made by NMU and your NGB.<br />

RESIDENT STUDENT-ATHLETE STANDARDS<br />

Definition:<br />

A USOEC resident student-athlete is defined as a student-athlete who has been approved by <strong>the</strong>ir NGB and<br />

NMU to train at <strong>the</strong> United States Olympic Education Center for any one semester. He or she must also be<br />

accepted and/or eligible to continue enrollment at NMU as a student and should be a full-time student each<br />

semester in an official NMU Academic Program, preferably a baccalaureate (full-time =12 credits or more)<br />

or graduate level degree program (full-time = 6 or more credits) to receive full room and board aid in any<br />

semester.<br />

Residency Qualifications:<br />

� Be a United States citizen and old enough to be accepted into NMU<br />

� Be eligible to compete in your sport’s next Olympic games<br />

� Complete <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athlete Application each year<br />

� Be accepted into and enrolled as a full-time student at NMU<br />

� Be enrolled in and maintain at least 12 or more credit hours each semester<br />

� Complete a health profile with <strong>the</strong> Sports Medicine staff as soon as possible upon arriving<br />

� Complete all medical, consent, conduct, MGH patient consent, and waiver forms annually<br />

� On-Campus Housing - All single undergraduate students shall live in <strong>University</strong> residence halls<br />

while enrolled at NMU. Residents may be allowed to move off-campus provided you meet one of<br />

<strong>the</strong> following criteria:<br />

o Have reached junior status (56 or more credit hours), or<br />

o Have resided four or more semesters in residence halls while enrolled in college, or<br />

o Are 21 years of age or older on or before <strong>the</strong> last official day of registration, or<br />

o Residing at home with <strong>the</strong> parent or legal guardian, or<br />

o Are veterans who qualify for veteran benefits, or<br />

o Are legally married, with a valid marriage certificate<br />

Monitoring or Evaluation Standards:<br />

� New residents will be placed on a 90-day probation period<br />

� After 60 days <strong>the</strong> resident coach will review <strong>the</strong> new athlete’s progress and initiation<br />

� Each athlete needs to achieve a 2.0 gpa each semester (see page 10 for more info)<br />

� Each athlete needs to demonstrate progress in training and competition, including reaching<br />

performance goals established by <strong>the</strong> athlete and his/her coach<br />

Each resident athlete is required to complete <strong>the</strong> following forms as a condition of enrollment in <strong>the</strong><br />

USOEC resident program each year. Forms A through E are mandatory.<br />

ROLES OF ORGANIZATIONS IN THE<br />

OLYMPIC EDUCATION CENTER PROGRAMS<br />

� National Governing Bodies’ Roles<br />

National Governing Bodies (NGBs) are responsible for <strong>the</strong> resident athlete selection process for <strong>the</strong><br />

USOEC program. They are also responsible for selecting <strong>the</strong> coach who will lead <strong>the</strong> USOEC program.<br />

NGBs may defer athlete selection to <strong>the</strong> resident coach.<br />

NGBs are responsible for establishing and conducting programs at <strong>the</strong> USOEC. When doing so, NGBs<br />

pay particular attention to <strong>the</strong> objectives of <strong>the</strong> USOEC and, based upon those objectives, develop<br />

training plans for <strong>the</strong> athletes.<br />

NGBs are responsible for <strong>the</strong> continued monitoring of program quality. The programs are conducted with<br />

<strong>the</strong> realistic expectations that Olympic, World and Pan American Games Champions will be produced.<br />

Any expectation that falls short of <strong>the</strong> goal of developing Olympic, World and Pan Am Games<br />

Champions is not consistent with <strong>the</strong> philosophy of <strong>the</strong> USOEC.<br />

NGBs support <strong>the</strong> USOEC resident programs by providing sports specific equipment, financial support,<br />

expert coaching, and competition opportunities both at <strong>the</strong> USOEC and throughout <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

� United States Olympic Committee’s Role<br />

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) authorizes <strong>the</strong> USOEC to promote resident athlete<br />

programs and to establish a model for athlete development in a university setting. Any program that<br />

carries <strong>the</strong> USOC endorsement must contribute to <strong>the</strong> primary mission of <strong>the</strong> Olympic Committee.<br />

Athletes accepted into <strong>the</strong> program must strive to represent <strong>the</strong> highest ideals of <strong>the</strong> Olympic movement<br />

and commit <strong>the</strong>mselves to a program of athletic preparation that will enable <strong>the</strong>m to become <strong>the</strong> “best<br />

<strong>the</strong>y can be”.<br />

� Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Role<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong> provides resident student-athletes with <strong>the</strong> facilities and educational<br />

programs necessary to maintain a balance between training and education. NMU and USOEC staffs<br />

assist athletes in <strong>the</strong>ir pursuit of a meaningful athletic and educational experience. NMU monitors <strong>the</strong><br />

living environment regarding adherence to USOEC and NMU rules and policies, while maintaining a<br />

high quality of life for Olympic resident athletes. In compliance with <strong>the</strong> National Clery Act, NMU’s<br />

� Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Role Cont.<br />

The administrative staff of <strong>the</strong> USOEC are employees of NMU who coordinate <strong>the</strong> program with <strong>the</strong><br />

USOC, <strong>the</strong> NGBs and NMU’s administration. The USOEC staff are responsible for <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

� Providing <strong>the</strong> facilities and services necessary to produce Olympic champions (housing, food service,<br />

secretarial, transportation, etc.).<br />

� Providing <strong>the</strong> support services necessary to assist in <strong>the</strong> academic success of current student-athletes<br />

through regularly scheduled classes at NMU, and distance learning, and to encourage and support <strong>the</strong><br />

development of lifelong learning skills.<br />

� Coordinating a variety of regional, national, and international training camps, competitions, and<br />

coach’s education programs.<br />

� Fostering <strong>the</strong> development and maintenance of world class athletic facilities for use by athletes and<br />

assisting in making existing athletic facilities available to all qualified persons.<br />

� Providing exposure for <strong>the</strong> USOC, NMU, and <strong>the</strong> State of <strong>Michigan</strong> by promoting <strong>the</strong> Olympic<br />

movement and <strong>the</strong> Olympic ideals.<br />

� Working with o<strong>the</strong>r agencies to provide sports medicine and sports science services to resident<br />

athletes.<br />

� Assisting athletes with problems as needed (registration, advising, tutoring, etc.).<br />

� Monitoring <strong>the</strong> adherence to USOEC policies regarding <strong>the</strong> living environment (maintaining quiet<br />

hours, adhering to facility usage requirements, etc.).<br />

ATHLETE & PROGRAM SERVICES<br />

The following services are provided for all eligible student-athletes:<br />

1. Room and board scholarships for college student-athletes who reside on <strong>the</strong> USOEC’s designated<br />

floor of Meyland Hall<br />

2. One comforter if needed<br />

3. Cable TV and refrigerator in each room (Meyland Hall 3 rd floor rooms only)<br />

4. Venue usage for scheduled, supervised training sessions<br />

5. A waiver of out-of-state tuition costs<br />

6. Medical care for athletic injuries that are sustained while training at <strong>the</strong> USOEC to <strong>the</strong> extent that<br />

<strong>the</strong> injury can be managed by <strong>the</strong> athletic trainer. Visits with <strong>the</strong> Team Physician will be billed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> athletes’ insurance carrier.<br />

7. All <strong>University</strong> services such as library usage and counseling, except where a student fee is<br />

assessed to NMU students<br />

8. Laundry room facilities for those officially assigned to Meyland Hall<br />

ATHLETE & PROGRAM SERVICES<br />

The following are <strong>the</strong> student-athlete’s responsibilities:<br />

1. The cost of room and board (eligible student-athletes’ scholarships may cover all or part)<br />

2. Personal training equipment and equipment repair<br />

3. Health insurance<br />

Note: All resident athletes should be covered by <strong>the</strong>ir own personal health insurance. Some<br />

athletes may be eligible for <strong>the</strong> USOC’s Elite Athlete Health Insurance. If not covered by family<br />

insurance, athletes should check with <strong>the</strong>ir NGB or NMU’s Health Center to purchase insurance<br />

coverage.<br />

4. The cost of attending competitions unless covered by <strong>the</strong> NGB (including transportation)<br />

5. The cost of in-state tuition<br />

6. Damages incurred in your room or o<strong>the</strong>r areas of <strong>the</strong> residence hall<br />

7. Transportation from your home to Marquette<br />

8. Books and materials needed for school<br />

9. Lab fees required for school<br />

10. Laundry supplies (detergent, bleach, etc.)<br />

11. <strong>University</strong> parking permit ($140/year for resident or commuter)<br />

12. <strong>University</strong> recreational pass. Cost is $70/semester or $130 for fall & winter semesters.<br />

�The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) is dedicated to eliminating <strong>the</strong> practice of doping in<br />

sport, and to preserving <strong>the</strong> well being of sport and ensuring <strong>the</strong> health of athletes through research<br />

initiatives and educational programs.<br />

Call <strong>the</strong> USADA Drug Reference Line with any Questions<br />

The USADA Drug Reference Line is answered live between 8 a.m.<br />

and 4 p.m. (Mountain time). In addition, <strong>the</strong> USADA Drug Reference<br />

Line provides additional information on medical notification forms. For more information and<br />

clarification on any of <strong>the</strong> prohibited classes of substances or prohibited methods, please call USADA's<br />

Drug Reference Line at 1-800-233-0393 (within <strong>the</strong> U.S.), or 1-719-785-2020 (outside <strong>the</strong> United States),<br />

or email your inquiry to drugreference@usantidoping.org.<br />

EXPECTATIONS<br />

For Programs & Athletes<br />

�Academic Expectations:<br />

All resident athletes are expected to achieve a 2.0 grade point average each semester.<br />

Any athlete that does not achieve <strong>the</strong> minimum 2.0 gpa in any semester will be placed<br />

on “academic probation”.<br />

If an athlete does not achieve a 2.0 gpa for two consecutive semesters, he/she will be<br />

suspended by <strong>the</strong> USOEC for a period of one year. Athletes may appeal <strong>the</strong>ir suspension by providing a<br />

written reason(s) why he or she should be allowed to continue. A review panel will review all appeals and<br />

render a decision. NMU may impose independent conditions, probations, or suspensions for poor academic<br />

performances. You can find NMU’s standards by searching NMU’s web for “Academic Proficiency<br />

Standards”.<br />

There are several academic assistance programs (tutoring, study halls, etc.) that we can help arrange for those<br />

athletes who desire additional help.<br />

All athletes are expected to be students at NMU. Only under unique circumstances and approved of in<br />

advance by <strong>the</strong> USOEC Director will this requirement be waived.<br />

�Athletic Expectations:<br />

All athletes are expected to meet <strong>the</strong> performance goals set for <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong>ir coach at <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning of <strong>the</strong> year. The progress made toward <strong>the</strong>se goals will be evaluated annually.<br />

Any athlete not achieving his/her athletic goals may not be accepted for residency <strong>the</strong><br />

following program year unless <strong>the</strong>re are extenuating circumstances.<br />

�Behavioral Expectations:<br />

Each student-athlete’s conduct in and out of competition or <strong>the</strong> classroom must adhere to <strong>the</strong> following<br />

codes of conducts set out by <strong>the</strong> NGB, <strong>the</strong> USOC and NMU. The following describes each<br />

organization’s code of conduct in more detail:<br />

NGB’s Code of Conduct<br />

All student athletes are expected to adhere to <strong>the</strong>ir NGB’s code of conduct, which governs<br />

participation in Olympic resident programs. Any violation of this code of conduct will be<br />

reported to your NGB’s national office and <strong>the</strong> USOC and <strong>the</strong> NGB will be required to take<br />

appropriate action. If, in <strong>the</strong> opinion of <strong>the</strong> USOC or NMU, <strong>the</strong> action is deemed inadequate for<br />

<strong>the</strong> seriousness of <strong>the</strong> violation, your NGB’s entire program may be jeopardized.<br />

NMU’s Athletic Code of Conduct<br />

Student-athletes training at <strong>the</strong> USOEC are guests of NMU. The <strong>University</strong> provides assistance<br />

to you in <strong>the</strong> form of a room and board scholarships, waiver of out-of-state tuition fees, use of<br />

athletic training facilities, and o<strong>the</strong>r academic and athletic support services. In exchange for <strong>the</strong>se<br />

privileges, you are expected to reflect high standards on all levels: social, academic, and athletic.<br />

NMU’s Athletic Code of Conduct Cont.<br />

A complete USOEC Athletic Code is printed in Appendix B in <strong>the</strong> back of this <strong>handbook</strong>. Each<br />

USOEC student athlete is required to sign this document to acknowledge an understanding and<br />

acceptance of <strong>the</strong> conditions of this code. All USOEC student athletes are also required to adhere<br />

to <strong>the</strong> NMU Student Code. A copy of <strong>the</strong> NMU Student Code is posted on-line at:<br />

http://webb.nmu.edu/dso/SiteSections/OurServices/HandbookSection2.shtml. Extra copies are<br />

available in <strong>the</strong> Dean of Student’s office. Please feel free to see any of <strong>the</strong> USOEC administrative<br />

staff regarding questions about expectations for USOEC student-athletes.<br />

�Facility Treatment:<br />

NMU provides NGB’s and <strong>the</strong>ir athletes with access to state-of-<strong>the</strong>-art training facilities. The facilities<br />

include a sports medicine clinic, weight rooms, locker rooms, and training gymnasiums. Meyland Hall<br />

also underwent a major renovation in 2006, costing over $6 million dollars. We expect that each of you<br />

will treat <strong>the</strong>se facilities with respect by doing <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

� Throwing trash in a trash can.<br />

� Picking up your clo<strong>the</strong>s at <strong>the</strong> end of each training session - Tending to your laundry.<br />

� Putting all equipment away in its proper place.<br />

� Notifying staff of maintenance concerns or general needs<br />

immediately.<br />

� Keeping walls, doors, and floors free of gum, marks, spit,<br />

stickers, and o<strong>the</strong>r debris.<br />

� Cleaning up spills (water, shampoo, soap, power drinks, etc.) immediately or notifying a<br />

custodian immediately.<br />

� Do not let anyone outside <strong>the</strong> program access to or use of <strong>the</strong> doors coded access number<br />

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES<br />

DUE PROCESS<br />

There are three organizations that may be involved in any athlete disciplinary situation: <strong>the</strong> NGB, <strong>the</strong><br />

USOC, and/or NMU. Any disciplinary action taken by your NGB can be appealed through your NGB’s<br />

due process procedure. Questions regarding your NGB and/or USOC disciplinary decisions may be<br />

referred to <strong>the</strong> USOC’s athlete ombudsman, a position that was created by <strong>the</strong> federal Amateur Sports<br />

Act, at <strong>the</strong> following address:<br />

DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES Cont.<br />

� Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Due Process<br />

NMU generally adheres to <strong>the</strong> following process when investigating all incidents:<br />

1. Investigation Process ~ NMU seeks information about <strong>the</strong> incident by talking with <strong>the</strong> parties<br />

involved, eye witnesses and o<strong>the</strong>rs as appropriate.<br />

2. Report of Investigation Results ~ The USOEC notifies <strong>the</strong> Program Coach, NGB Executive<br />

Director, USOC, parents (if <strong>the</strong> athlete is a minor), and/or o<strong>the</strong>r appropriate parties.<br />

3. Determination of Action ~ NMU’s Dean of Students office determines and levies discipline and/or<br />

sanctions based on <strong>the</strong> evidence and established procedures & time lines. In addition to <strong>the</strong> NMU<br />

Dean of Students office review, NMU also has a separate 3-person Athletic Review Committee<br />

that reviews all code violations for NCAA and/or USOEC student athletes. This committee may<br />

also meet to discuss <strong>the</strong> alleged violation and take action as appropriate specifically regarding<br />

<strong>the</strong> student athlete’s continued participation in <strong>the</strong> USOEC program. NMU’s review process is<br />

4. Appeal Process ~ Disciplinary decisions taken by NMU can be appealed by following <strong>the</strong> process<br />

ACADEMIC INFORMATION &<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

We are here to help you succeed academically. However, <strong>the</strong> responsibility for being a winner in <strong>the</strong><br />

classroom rests with YOU. You have <strong>the</strong> responsibility to ask for help when you’re not doing well in<br />

class. You have <strong>the</strong> responsibility to complete assignments on time. Ultimately, YOU have <strong>the</strong><br />

responsibility to take control of your own learning process and become an academic success.<br />

� Grade Point Average:<br />

Each athlete is expected to attain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) for each semester/grading<br />

period enrolled. If you do not receive a 2.0 GPA or better, you will<br />

automatically be placed on academic probation. A meeting may be scheduled<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Assistant Director to review your academic performance. You may be<br />

dismissed from <strong>the</strong> USOEC program if you fail to receive a 2.0 GPA in two (2)<br />

consecutive semesters. Please ask for help early if you fall behind.<br />

�Class Attendance/Absence:<br />

Poor attendance will have a negative impact on your academic success. You should<br />

understand that your instructor is not obligated to excuse you from class. If you<br />

expect to miss class due to an athletic competition during <strong>the</strong> semester, you are<br />

strongly encouraged to discuss <strong>the</strong> expected absence and alternatives with your<br />

instructor as soon as you become aware of <strong>the</strong> situation. Your coach has Student Absence Forms<br />

that are to be used for notifying your professors of all sport-related activities that entail missing a<br />

class(es). Your coach issues <strong>the</strong>se out to you, but you deliver <strong>the</strong> form to <strong>the</strong> professor. An excused<br />

absence from class does not relieve you from <strong>the</strong> responsibility to complete all required course<br />

assignments.<br />

ILLNESSES / SICK: If you are ill and unable to attend class, you must see <strong>the</strong> Athletic Trainer<br />

and/or physician. After visiting <strong>the</strong> Athletic Trainer, <strong>the</strong> Trainer will contact <strong>the</strong> USOEC Admin.<br />

staff to discuss and/or verify your need to miss class.<br />

�Academic Advising and Course Registration:<br />

Once each semester <strong>the</strong>re is a specific period established for campus-wide advising and course<br />

registration. Every student should have a faculty member assigned to <strong>the</strong>m for academic advising.<br />

Athletes are strongly encouraged to meet with <strong>the</strong>ir faculty advisor frequently.<br />

o Course registration for <strong>the</strong> Winter 2013 semester begins in October – Check with your<br />

Academic Advisor for any questions.<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong> is committed to <strong>the</strong> academic and professional development of its students. While a<br />

student’s academic program is ultimately his or her own responsibility, <strong>the</strong> university, through <strong>the</strong> academic<br />

advising process, provides <strong>the</strong> student with information about career options, educational programs, courses,<br />

resources, policies and procedures. The academic advising process is a shared responsibility which involves<br />

If you have a declared major, your adviser is a faculty member from that<br />

� MEDIA RELATIONS<br />

The Media Relations Department promotes <strong>the</strong> U. S. Olympic Education Center, its events and athletes,<br />

and assists with developing media opportunities for <strong>the</strong> Center.<br />

To ensure proper exposure for you and your sport we need your help. The first step<br />

is to complete <strong>the</strong> Athlete Biography (Appendix C) and return it to your coach by<br />

September 7. Photographs will be scheduled through your coach in <strong>the</strong> fall semester<br />

of each year. These photographs will be used for media guides, athlete profile<br />

information, autograph sheets, news releases, and <strong>the</strong> web site.<br />

The outstanding free publicity you can receive from <strong>the</strong> media as a USOEC athlete is<br />

very valuable to you, your sport, NMU, and <strong>the</strong> USOC. The Media Relations Department provides you<br />

<strong>the</strong> opportunity to promote yourself, your teammates, coaches and <strong>the</strong> USOEC through local, state, and<br />

national media. Remember, people judge you as an athlete by your athletic performance, but <strong>the</strong>y judge<br />

you as a person by your performance with <strong>the</strong> media.<br />

� FOOD SERVICE & NMU ID CARD USE<br />

Meals are provided to USOEC student-athletes at The Marketplace throughout <strong>the</strong> school year. The<br />

<strong>University</strong> Center Food Court is used during <strong>the</strong> summer and at o<strong>the</strong>r times when NMU is not in session.<br />

� Each meal card swipe costs <strong>the</strong> USOEC budget. We pay<br />

per meal eaten; to put it more accurately, every time one of us<br />

enters <strong>the</strong> MP or UC - even if only to meet your friends to talk,<br />

<strong>the</strong> USOEC budget gets charged.<br />

� Please let Mike Kaurala know if you are having any issues<br />

with your meal card/NMU ID working. If <strong>the</strong> cashiers need to<br />

swipe your card more than once to get it to “work” let us know<br />

that same day.<br />

� You must always present your ID/Meal card to <strong>the</strong> Food<br />

Service cashier every time you eat. The USOEC will NOT accept billings from you for “lost”,<br />

“stolen” or “misplaced” meal cards. If we receive such a billing you will be responsible for<br />

paying <strong>the</strong> charge.<br />

� Protect your meal card as if it was cash. Report lost cards immediately.<br />

� It is unacceptable to allow ANYONE ELSE to use your meal card at anytime for any reason. If<br />

this occurs you will be held financially responsible, and you may lose meal privileges or face<br />

possible expulsion from <strong>the</strong> program. Your meal card is yours and yours alone!<br />

�MEALS ON THE GO<br />

"Meals on <strong>the</strong> Go" is a NMU Dining program to allow individuals with a meal plan to<br />

pre-order and pick up a meal when <strong>the</strong>y will be unable to come into <strong>the</strong> Dining Facility<br />

for a designated meal period because of a conflicting event.<br />

Each meal plan participant requesting this service will be required to complete and<br />

submit <strong>the</strong> "Meals on <strong>the</strong> Go" Application Form to <strong>the</strong> Simply Superior Catering &<br />

Events Office (Room 1104) <strong>University</strong> Center, one week prior to <strong>the</strong> start date.<br />

� You may submit a "Meals on <strong>the</strong> Go" order form for meals you will miss. These forms are available in <strong>the</strong><br />

Simply Superior Catering & Events Office (Room 1104) <strong>University</strong> Center.<br />

� This service is available:<br />

Monday - lunch, Monday- dinner,<br />

swipe <strong>the</strong> student's card and deduct a meal from <strong>the</strong>ir plan.<br />

� USOEC WEIGHT ROOMS<br />

The USOEC uses two weight room facilities in <strong>the</strong> Superior Dome. Teams will be assigned specific<br />

weight room training times each semester. In addition to <strong>the</strong>se assigned team<br />

times, a coach may access <strong>the</strong> weight room with his/her team provided that it is<br />

reserved with NMU Athletics. Under no circumstances should an athlete be in<br />

<strong>the</strong> weight room alone or with o<strong>the</strong>r athletes without approved supervision.<br />

No guests are permitted in <strong>the</strong> weight room without prior approval from <strong>the</strong><br />

Operations Manager.<br />

� TRANSPORTATION SERVICES<br />

Through a USOC grant, <strong>the</strong> USOEC will be able to provide LIMITED shuttle service to and from <strong>the</strong><br />

Sawyer International Airport and <strong>the</strong> Marquette Bus Station until <strong>the</strong> funds are<br />

exhausted. To schedule transportation, simply complete a departure form and <strong>the</strong>n have<br />

your coach sign it to confirm it is a sport related travel (Appendix F).<br />

Departures:<br />

Whenever you leave Meyland Hall overnight, regardless of <strong>the</strong> reason or length of departure, a departure<br />

form (Appendix F) must be filled out and given to your coach for <strong>the</strong>ir approval prior to departing.<br />

Departure forms can also be obtained from your coach or a RLC or in <strong>the</strong> USOEC copy/mail room. All<br />

departures to <strong>the</strong> airport will originate from Meyland Hall.<br />

Departure Form Submission Policy: 48 hours minimum notice will be required to submit<br />

transportation requests.<br />

No Show Policy:<br />

If you request transportation, but do not show up for your departure or arrival, without providing at least<br />

24 Hours notice of <strong>the</strong> change or cancellation, a $32.00 fee may be assessed. An exception to this policy<br />

is granted for changes and/or cancellations due to airport or airline/bus station changes. However, if a<br />

flight change occurs, you must call (906) 226-7777 to notify Checker Cab of your flight change so a<br />

driver can be rescheduled.<br />

Wildcat Shuttle<br />

The Wildcat Shuttle Service is brought to you by NMU Public Safety and Police Services in conjunction<br />

with ASNMU. The Wildcat Shuttle offers students, faculty and staff free, reliable transportation.<br />

The main goal of <strong>the</strong> Wildcat Shuttle System is to transport students from <strong>the</strong><br />

LRC to <strong>the</strong> Jacobetti Center and to <strong>the</strong> Superior Dome when classes are<br />

changing.<br />

Remember: Students, faculty and staff are able to ride any fixed-route<br />

Marq-Tran Bus in Marquette County free of charge with a student ID.<br />

Flag down <strong>the</strong> shuttle at any time and <strong>the</strong> driver will be happy to stop for you.<br />

� PARKING ON-CAMPUS<br />

All USOEC athletes living on- or off-campus must have <strong>the</strong>ir vehicle registered to park on-campus and<br />

pay <strong>the</strong> necessary annual fee of $140. This regulation also applies to high school<br />

athletes living on campus. NO EXCEPTIONS!<br />

Parking for USOEC athletes and coaches is available in lot 14 and lot 24. Both of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se lots are for resident students, with <strong>the</strong> exception of no freshman parking in lot<br />

24. Freshman can park in lot 14. Parking in Lot 22 (Services Building) is available by special permit<br />

and can be obtained from <strong>the</strong> Public Safety office at no additional cost. Parking citations for illegal<br />

parking are a minimum of $25.00. Parking in a handicap space is a $100.00 fine.<br />

Students are NOT allowed to park in Lot 9 (circle lot behind Meyland).<br />

SPORTS MEDICINE SERVICES<br />

Medical Services at USOEC Clinic<br />

All of <strong>the</strong> medical and athletic training services provide to student-athletes are generously provided by<br />

Marquette General Hospital (MGH) and <strong>the</strong>ir employees. The <strong>University</strong> provides <strong>the</strong> clinic space where<br />

USOEC student-athletes can be assessed and treated for sports related injuries.<br />

Prior to arrival at <strong>the</strong> USOEC, <strong>the</strong> Sports Medicine staff need all participants to complete <strong>the</strong> Marquette<br />

General “admittance form”, complete an online and electronic Sportsware medical record.<br />

Clinic Expectations:<br />

1. Be on-time for your treatments<br />

2. Practice proper hygiene before treatments – shower post practices for treatments<br />

3. Please sign-in upon entering <strong>the</strong> clinic<br />

4. Be and practice orderly and polite conduct<br />

5. Respect o<strong>the</strong>r’s privacy<br />

6. Take responsibility for your health care – please ask questions when you don’t understand<br />

7. Please turn off cell phones or put <strong>the</strong>m on silent<br />

8. The clinic is a medical facility where <strong>the</strong> public is also seen, it is not a social lounge.<br />

� SUBSTANCE ABUSE<br />

To be consistent with <strong>the</strong> aims and objectives of a high performance sports program that also emphasizes academic<br />

excellence, certain substances are NOT to be used. Consistent with this philosophy <strong>the</strong>re will be no<br />

drugs, except medications prescribed by a physician, no alcohol (including collecting bottles or cans),<br />

no smoking, no chewing tobacco or snuff, and to preserve a healthy environment, no burning of<br />

incense in <strong>the</strong> rooms. Violation of this policy may result in your immediate expulsion from <strong>the</strong><br />

resident program. Please do not jeopardize your athletic career by making poor lifestyle decisions.<br />

LIVING ENVIRONMENT<br />

Meyland Hall, named after Gun<strong>the</strong>r Meyland, professor of English for 37 years,<br />

opened in 1966. In <strong>the</strong> summer of 2006, Meyland Hall received an extensive<br />

renovation of all floors. The cost to renovate <strong>the</strong> hall was approximately $6 million. With<br />

<strong>the</strong> new look and furnishings, <strong>the</strong>re are new policies and rules for how <strong>the</strong> USOEC programs use <strong>the</strong> 3 rd<br />

floor.<br />

� Proper Use of Residence Hall Space<br />

Given <strong>the</strong> new changes to Meyland, how we use <strong>the</strong> building and its furnishings has changed as well.<br />

Here are <strong>the</strong> changes and expectations for care of this building:<br />

� No exercise equipment can be used or stored in <strong>the</strong> TV lounges, study rooms or sun rooms<br />

� No bikes are allowed in common areas such as hallways, TV lounges, sun-rooms or study rooms<br />

� Nothing is to be taped, hung, stuck or attached to <strong>the</strong> wood doors<br />

� Do not take any furniture from any commons area. All furniture must remain where it is!<br />

NMU’s Housing Department has made a significant investment in this residence hall which will<br />

improve your stay and comfort. We expect that everyone will do <strong>the</strong>ir part to maintain this<br />

building for years to come.<br />

� Check-in:<br />

At check-in, you should have been issued a room key and first time residents will also be issued a<br />

temporary ID/meal card until we can activate your NMU ID card. All returning athletes should use <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

NMU ID as with <strong>the</strong> previous year. Your ID/meal card must be presented for admittance to <strong>the</strong> dining<br />

hall, NMU facilities, and USOEC facilities. A lost meal card will cost $15.00 and a lost room key costs<br />

$20.00. A Resident Life Coordinator will ask each resident living on-campus to complete Housing’s<br />

Room Inventory form (Appendix G) within two (2) days of your check-in.<br />

� During Your Stay:<br />

The USOEC’s presence on this campus is reliant on our ability to maintain positive relationships. It is an<br />

expectation that every athlete respects, not only his or her space in <strong>the</strong>ir room, but also <strong>the</strong> space in <strong>the</strong><br />

halls and <strong>the</strong> lounges. This includes, but is not limited to, appropriate use of furniture, walls and bulletin<br />

boards. It is also expected that you will respect your fellow athletes’ and NMU students’ need for rest<br />

and recovery, studying, and privacy.<br />

�Room Changes:<br />

All room changes must be approved in advance by your head coach and <strong>the</strong> USOEC. NMU’s Housing<br />

department requires all room changes to be documented for security, official records, and mail purposes.<br />

There is a sample room change form in <strong>the</strong> Appendix (H) for your review.<br />

� Check-out:<br />

All residents must properly checkout with <strong>the</strong> Meyland Hall front desk or an RLC at <strong>the</strong> conclusion of <strong>the</strong><br />

program year or whenever you officially leave <strong>the</strong> program ~ having a room-mate does not change this<br />

requirement! If you fail to properly checkout, you will be charged a minimum fee of $75. Failure to<br />

schedule an appointment to have your room inspected may result in a charge for “improperly” checking<br />

out. Additional cleaning, if necessary, will be a separate charge from <strong>the</strong> “improper” checkout charge.<br />

To properly check-out please follow <strong>the</strong>se simple steps:<br />

1) Notify your coach, coordinator and Operations Manager that you are leaving.<br />

2) Set up an appointment with an RLC at least two (2) days before you leave.<br />

3) Clean your room ~ sweep, dust, mop, clean your sink and shower, fridge &clean all walls.<br />

4) Turn in your room key and ID card to <strong>the</strong> Meyland Hall Front Desk or an RLC.<br />

5) Complete NMU Housing’s Contract Termination Form (Appendix I).<br />

Meyland Hall’s Living Environment Cont<br />

� Resident Life Coordinators:<br />

The USOEC housing floor will be staffed by Resident Life Coordinators (RLC’s). The RLC’s are part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> USOEC staff, and are responsible to ensure that <strong>the</strong> housing facility is running well. Each RLC will<br />

perform daily rounds and are available for, and should be used, as a resource.<br />

The RLC’s are also responsible for ensuring that <strong>the</strong> housing facility is quiet, safe, and comfortable for<br />

�Appropriate Noise Standards:<br />

Quiet hours – 10:00 P.M. to 10:00 A.M. daily. During <strong>the</strong>se hours, noise should not be heard<br />

when your door is closed. Please be courteous to o<strong>the</strong>rs in <strong>the</strong> building. Any Resident Sport’s<br />

Dorm Liaison, Resident Life Coordinator, or a Meyland Hall RA may ask you to turn down your<br />

music, television or simply ask you to quiet down. We appreciate your compliance to <strong>the</strong>ir request<br />

and respect for <strong>the</strong>ir job responsibilities.<br />

Courtesy hours – 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M. This is a 12-hour period when everyone has a right to<br />

sleep, study and be safe. At any time during <strong>the</strong> day someone may ask you to turn down your music,<br />

television, or simply to quiet down. Please respect <strong>the</strong>ir rights.<br />

� Curfews:<br />

Curfews vary from sport to sport. The coach or coordinator who sets <strong>the</strong> curfew policy understands that<br />

athletes need to keep reasonable hours and have adequate rest daily to be consistent with <strong>the</strong><br />

physiological principles of effective training. If curfew ends after <strong>the</strong> beginning of quiet hours, athletes<br />

should be particularly sensitive to <strong>the</strong> rights of o<strong>the</strong>rs to have a quiet environment as <strong>the</strong>y are coming into<br />

<strong>the</strong> building and entering <strong>the</strong> floor.<br />

� Visitor Policy:<br />

All overnight guests must be registered with <strong>the</strong> Resident Director. Guests must be registered one day in<br />

advance. You are responsible for your guest knowing and abiding by all <strong>the</strong> rules of your NGB, USOEC,<br />

& NMU. See an RLC for <strong>the</strong> registration form. Only guests of <strong>the</strong> same gender are permitted to stay<br />

overnight.<br />

Visitors are allowed in <strong>the</strong> athlete rooms or in <strong>the</strong> formal lounge area located near <strong>the</strong> check-in desk until<br />

10:00 p.m. Quiet Hours begin at 10:00 p.m. and ALL visitors must leave <strong>the</strong> Olympic housing facility.<br />

We know you have a choice in life and a choice in where you train. By choosing to train at <strong>the</strong> Olympic<br />

Education Center you ARE choosing to follow <strong>the</strong> USOEC visitor policy and your individual sport’s<br />

visitor policy, which can be more restrictive<br />

� Housekeeping Services:<br />

A comforter, two sheets, one bath towel, one washcloth, and one pillowcase can be provided to each<br />

resident at <strong>the</strong> USOEC who truly need <strong>the</strong>se items. The USOEC cannot provide <strong>the</strong>se items to all<br />

student-athletes. Athletes are responsible for laundering <strong>the</strong>ir own sheets, towels, and clothing. If <strong>the</strong><br />

sheets, towels, and washcloth are issued, <strong>the</strong>y are yours to keep. All o<strong>the</strong>r items are property of <strong>the</strong><br />

USOEC/NMU. Twice each year we will conduct room maintenance and safety inspections. It is your<br />

responsibility to keep your room clean (sinks, toilet, shower, TV, fridge, etc).<br />

� Personal Mail:<br />

Your mailbox is located in <strong>the</strong> Meyland Hall lobby and corresponds with your room number. Your room<br />

key opens your mailbox. Mail is distributed Monday through Saturday between 1:00 and 3:00 P.M.<br />

NMU’s direct dial long distance, a calling card, or by calling collect.<br />

� TV Rooms & Rules:<br />

There are two (2) TV rooms on <strong>the</strong> 3 rd floor. TV rooms are for watching television programs and not for<br />

viewing training videotapes. The choice of programming is to be made by a consensus of people in <strong>the</strong><br />

room. No training equipment, including bikes, is to be used or stored in <strong>the</strong>se rooms. Cutting of hair is<br />

not allowed in <strong>the</strong>se areas as well. There is no overnight sleeping in <strong>the</strong> TV rooms or “sun rooms” at<br />

any time.<br />

� Refrigerators:<br />

It is your responsibility to keep <strong>the</strong> fridge assigned to your room clean and sanitary. Failure to properly<br />

clean your fridge may result in extra charges. If <strong>the</strong>re is chronic abuse of <strong>the</strong> fridge, it will be removed<br />

from <strong>the</strong> room permanently. Please clean it regularly.<br />

� Laundry Rooms:<br />

Washers and dryers are available free of charge to ONLY those who are officially assigned to a room on<br />

<strong>the</strong> 3 rd floor of Meyland Hall. All unclaimed laundry may be collected and donated to charity. Be<br />

responsible and courteous ~ take care of your clo<strong>the</strong>s by checking your laundry often. Please do not<br />

overload <strong>the</strong> machines. Ask questions if you are unsure of how to properly operate <strong>the</strong> machines. Report<br />

any problems with <strong>the</strong> machines to <strong>the</strong> Front Desk.<br />

� Valuables and Equipment Storage:<br />

Valuables should be secured within your room. Always lock your door every time you leave your room,<br />

and leave your screens in <strong>the</strong> windows. The USOEC is not responsible for any personal property that is<br />

lost or stolen. The USOEC has very limited storage in Meyland. Please see an RLC if you have any<br />

storage needs.<br />

� Air Conditioners:<br />

Air conditioners of any variety are not allowed in any residence hall, including <strong>the</strong> USOEC 3 rd floor.<br />

� Weapons ~ Guns, Knives, etc:<br />

ABSOLUTELY NO WEAPONS ARE ALLOWED ON-CAMPUS. NMU’s Public Safety<br />

Department will store all weapons (guns, b.b. guns, airsoft guns, knives, bows, paint ball<br />

guns, etc.). If you are found with an item determined to be a weapon, you may be<br />

expelled from <strong>the</strong> program and university immediately; this includes weapons stored in<br />

your vehicle.<br />

�Single Rooms:<br />

Single rooms will be issued on a sport-by-sport basis and as space permits. To request a single room<br />

complete Appendix J and submit it to <strong>the</strong> USOEC Operations Manager.<br />

�Parking at Meyland Hall:<br />

All USOEC student-athletes living on- or off-campus must have <strong>the</strong>ir vehicle registered to park on<br />

campus and pay <strong>the</strong> necessary annual fee of $140. No parking is allowed in Lot 9 (circle<br />

lot behind Meyland). See page 14 for more information on parking.<br />

FIRE SAFETY & EMERGENCY PROCEDURES<br />

Fire safety is a top priority of NMU. NMU has a list of procedures to be strictly<br />

adhered to should a fire alarm be triggered in a residence hall area. NMU will conduct<br />

fire drills as frequently as once a month.<br />

� In case of a fire alarm YOU should:<br />

a. Leave <strong>the</strong> building immediately ~ remember to take room key!<br />

b. Evacuate <strong>the</strong> building using <strong>the</strong> exit closest to your room unless that exit is blocked by a staff<br />

member, Public Safety officer, intense smoke, or fire. If <strong>the</strong> next nearest exit is blocked, use<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r exit. If both exits are blocked, return to your room.<br />

c. Do not stand in stairwells, entryways or in <strong>the</strong> lobby corridor (near <strong>the</strong> mailboxes).<br />

d. Do not re-enter <strong>the</strong> hall until you are told to do so by a staff member.<br />

� Additional Instructions:<br />

a. Know your exit route and what to do if it is blocked.<br />

b. Before leaving your room, test your door. If it is hot, use an alternate escape route. If cool,<br />

open door cautiously. Close your door quickly if smoke or heat comes in. If <strong>the</strong> hall is clear<br />

your usual exit route may be safe.<br />

c. If you are trapped by fire, smoke, and/or heat:<br />

1. Stop and THINK.<br />

2. Close your door and seal off cracks with cloth or rags. Soak <strong>the</strong>m if water is nearby.<br />

3. Signal from your window and call Public Safety (NMU extension 2151) or 911.<br />

4. If you are above <strong>the</strong> first floor, stay in your room next to <strong>the</strong> window. Do not jump out.<br />

Staff will be circling <strong>the</strong> building at all times to check for entrapped persons; stay in<br />

your room and signal. Fire department personnel will tell you what to do and provide<br />

you with necessary assistance.<br />

d. Smoke is your worst enemy. Smoke, heat and gases can choke and kill you after only a few<br />

breaths. If you are caught in smoke get down and crawl.<br />

e. If your clothing catches fire, drop and roll (rolling will smo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> flames).<br />

1.1 Philosophy<br />

Athletic Code<br />

Student athletes training at <strong>the</strong> United States Olympic Education Center are guests of Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>. The university provides aid to <strong>the</strong>se student athletes in <strong>the</strong> form of a waiver of out-of-state<br />

tuition fees, use of training facilities, and o<strong>the</strong>r academic and athletic services. In exchange for <strong>the</strong>se<br />

privileges, USOEC student athletes are expected to reflect high standards on all levels: social, academic,<br />

and athletic.<br />

1.2 Purpose<br />

1.3.1 The term "USOEC student athlete" is defined at those student athletes accepted by <strong>the</strong><br />

NGB, <strong>the</strong> USOC, and NMU as resident athletes training at <strong>the</strong> United States Olympic<br />

Education Center at Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

1.3.2 Unacceptable behavior is defined as any behavior that violates <strong>the</strong> NMU Student code, <strong>the</strong><br />

USOEC Athlete Handbook, and/or local, state, or federal laws.<br />

1.3.3 Criminal activity is defined as felony level offenses: or serious misdemeanor level<br />

offenses which include, but are not limited to, criminal activity that involves violence,<br />

assaultive behavior, stalking behavior, sexual assault, and drug or alcohol offenses.<br />

1.3.4 The USOEC Athletic Code Violation review committee will consist of <strong>the</strong> USOEC<br />

Director, Director of Public Safety, and <strong>the</strong> Dean of Students, or <strong>the</strong>ir designees.


1.4 Scope<br />

Student athletes whose behavior does not meet acceptable standards expected of USOEC student<br />

athletes will be subject to review by <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code Violation Review Committee.<br />

1.4.1 All USOEC resident athletes will be given a copy of <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athlete Handbook and <strong>the</strong><br />

NMU Student Code, All athletes will be required to sign a document indicating that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

understand that participating in <strong>the</strong> USOEC program is a privilege and <strong>the</strong>y agree to <strong>the</strong><br />

standards of behavior outlined in <strong>the</strong> Athlete Handbook and Student Code,<br />

1.4.2 All student athletes will be required to acknowledge that <strong>the</strong>y are under obligation, as a<br />

condition of <strong>the</strong>ir participation in <strong>the</strong> USOEC program, to immediately self-report any<br />

violations of <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code to <strong>the</strong>ir coach or <strong>the</strong> USOEC Director. Failure to<br />

self-report any violations of <strong>the</strong> Athletic Code will subject <strong>the</strong> student athlete to possible<br />

disciplinary action by <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code Violation Review Committee.<br />

1.4.3 Any action taken pursuant to <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic code will be considered separate and<br />

distinct from any action that may be taken by <strong>the</strong> university's Dean of Students office, <strong>the</strong><br />

NGB, <strong>the</strong> USOC, or any action taken by law enforcement or criminal justice agencies<br />

against <strong>the</strong> student athlete.<br />

1.4.4 All USOEC student athletes will be subject to review under <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code if <strong>the</strong><br />

athlete:<br />

1.5 Procedures<br />

.01 Is in violation of Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong>'s Student Code,<br />

.02 Is in violation of <strong>the</strong> USOEC's Athlete Handbook,<br />

.03 Has committed criminal activity that consists of an act or acts prohibited under<br />

municipal, state or federal law as defined in this document.<br />

1.5.1 The USOEC Athletic Code Violation Review Committee will ei<strong>the</strong>r confer or hold a<br />

meeting or review and investigate all alleged violations of this code pursuant to sections<br />

1.4.4.01-.03 above. Members of <strong>the</strong> committee shall initiate <strong>the</strong> review process upon<br />

becoming aware of an alleged violation. The committee should confer or meet within three<br />

working days of becoming aware of <strong>the</strong> alleged violation.<br />

1.5.2 Coaches shall notify <strong>the</strong> USOEC Director of all alleged violations of <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic<br />

Code on becoming aware of <strong>the</strong> alleged violations.


1.5.3 The USOEC Athletic Code Violation Review Committee after conferring or meeting to review an<br />

alleged violation of <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code should receive input from <strong>the</strong> coach or any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

party who has relevant information that is pertinent to <strong>the</strong> alleged violation of <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic<br />

Code.<br />

1.5.4 Once alleged charges are resolved, <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code Violation Committee shall review <strong>the</strong><br />

outcome of <strong>the</strong> charges to determine <strong>the</strong> appropriate <strong>University</strong> response or action.<br />

1.5.5 The USOEC Athletic Code Violation Review Committee shall determine <strong>the</strong> disciplinary action or<br />

penalty to be imposed on <strong>the</strong> student athlete including but not limited to partial or permanent<br />

revocation of support and use of campus facilities and services.<br />

1.5.6 In <strong>the</strong> event that <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code Violation Review Committee cannot reach consensus as<br />

to what action to take on an alleged violation of <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code, <strong>the</strong> matter will be<br />

referred to <strong>the</strong> Associate Vice President for Recreation and Athletics to determine what action, if<br />

any, should be taken against <strong>the</strong> student athlete.<br />

1.5.7 The USOEC Director shall provide notice of disciplinary action taken by <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic<br />

Violation Review Committee to <strong>the</strong> Associate Vice President for Recreation and Athletics, <strong>the</strong><br />

student athlete's coach, <strong>the</strong> USOC, and <strong>the</strong> appropriate NGB within two business days. It will also<br />

be <strong>the</strong> USOEC Director's responsibility to notify <strong>the</strong> student athlete of any disciplinary action taken<br />

by <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code Violation Review Committee.<br />

1.5.8 Student athletes may appeal disciplinary action taken by <strong>the</strong> USOEC Athletic Code Violation<br />

Review Committee within 72 hours to <strong>the</strong> Associate Vice President for Recreation and Athletics, or<br />

Meyland 3 rd Floor Participants<br />

HOUSING AGREEMENT/BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES<br />

PREFACE<br />

Meyland Hall, <strong>the</strong> U.S. Olympic Education Center's (USOEC) residence hall, has been designated as a<br />

unique living environment to provide student athletes with <strong>the</strong> opportunity to develop and maintain a living<br />

environment based upon common interest in academic and athletic excellence, mutual support and<br />

encouragement, and an atmosphere conducive for studying, training, and resting. To facilitate <strong>the</strong><br />

development and maintenance of such an environment, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> agrees to hire staff that are<br />

supportive of this concept and to allow only those student athletes who understand, agree to, and meet <strong>the</strong><br />

provisions for this agreement to live in Meyland Hall. This agreement is intended to ensure that <strong>the</strong><br />

residents of Meyland Hall, <strong>the</strong> USOEC staff, <strong>University</strong> staff, and o<strong>the</strong>r interested parties know and<br />

understand <strong>the</strong> unique purpose for this living environment and <strong>the</strong> special conditions for living in Meyland<br />

Hall.<br />

CONDITIONS<br />

Since I voluntarily choose to live in Meyland Hall because of its unique designation, I agree to support and<br />

participate in USOEC programs intended to contribute to my academic/athletic advancement and to enrich my<br />

educational/athletic experiences to <strong>the</strong> degree that I can. I also agree to conduct myself in a manner that contributes<br />

to <strong>the</strong> principles stated above and reflects credit upon me, my sport, <strong>the</strong> USOEC, and Nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

I will do so by:<br />

1. Abiding by <strong>the</strong> regulations and administrative policies stated in <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s Student Code.<br />

ROOM SEARCHES/INSPECTIONS<br />

The USOEC staff and NMU reserve <strong>the</strong> right to enter, search, and inspect a resident athlete's residential facility<br />

(dorm room) in order to maintain university property, ensure <strong>the</strong> resident athlete's health and safety, and preserve a<br />

disciplined educational atmosphere. I also understand that any violation of <strong>the</strong> specific conditions of this agreement<br />

in which it is alleged that I was involved will be discussed with <strong>the</strong> USOEC and will be handled through normal<br />

USOEC and/or <strong>University</strong> channels. I fur<strong>the</strong>r understand that I may be required to move out of Meyland Hall into<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>University</strong> resident hall and required to forfeit all USOEC privileges if I am found to have been in violation<br />
