CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 29, 2008) —<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Dr</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Robert</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> presented "Langues of God: <strong>Modern</strong><br />

<strong>Art</strong>" to the Charlotte community in <strong>Queens</strong>' Sykes<br />

auditorium. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Dr</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sidered how artists such as<br />

Paul Klee <strong>and</strong> Arnold Shoenberg resp<strong>on</strong>ded to the<br />

horrors of World War Two. The questi<strong>on</strong> posed by the<br />

war, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> suggested, c<strong>on</strong>cerns how <strong>on</strong>e is to pursue a<br />

meaningful life in the wake of the Holocaust <strong>and</strong> the<br />

widespread destructi<strong>on</strong> of historical European cities.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> used slides of paintings to illustrate the despair<br />

felt by many Europeans of the time <strong>and</strong> went <strong>on</strong> to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sider how painters such as Wassily K<strong>and</strong>insky<br />

expressed hope in a positive future.<br />

With regard to religi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Dr</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> pointed out that<br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>ally western art focused <strong>on</strong> religious<br />

themes. However, the war <strong>and</strong> philosophical thinking<br />

called this traditi<strong>on</strong> into questi<strong>on</strong> as artists <strong>and</strong><br />

philosophers began to w<strong>on</strong>der how God could allow the<br />

atrocities of war to occur. The questi<strong>on</strong> became, "How<br />

could an artist paint lovely religious scenes in the wake of<br />

such widespread destructi<strong>on</strong>?" <str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> suggested that<br />

even though modern art often does not c<strong>on</strong>tain religious<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tent, it too can be religious in the sense that it can<br />

c<strong>on</strong>vey hope <strong>and</strong> a sense of the transcendent. As<br />

K<strong>and</strong>insky wrote in his C<strong>on</strong>cerning the Spiritual in <strong>Art</strong>:<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Dr</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> discusses the<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ship between<br />

music <strong>and</strong> painting<br />

"Literature, music <strong>and</strong> art are the first <strong>and</strong> most sensitive<br />

spheres in which [the] spiritual revoluti<strong>on</strong> makes itself<br />

felt. They reflect the dark picture of the present time <strong>and</strong><br />

show the importance of what at first was <strong>on</strong>ly a little point of light noticed by a few ...<br />

Perhaps they even grow dark in their turn but <strong>on</strong> the other h<strong>and</strong> they turn away from the<br />

soulless life of the present towards those substances <strong>and</strong> ideas which give free scope<br />

to the n<strong>on</strong>-material strivings of the soul."

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Dr</str<strong>on</strong>g>. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g> discusses<br />

religi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> the horrors<br />

of war<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Whalen</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s presentati<strong>on</strong> intrigued the audience <strong>and</strong><br />

sparked a discussi<strong>on</strong> about the relati<strong>on</strong>ship between<br />

moderrnity, art, <strong>and</strong> religi<strong>on</strong>.
