SYNOPSIS:
PROMISED LAND
IN COMPETITION
In Promised Land, Matt Damon stars as Steve Butler, a corporate salesman whose journey from farm boy to
big-time player takes an unexpected detour when he lands in a small town, where he grapples with a
surprising array of both open hearts and closed doors. Gus Van Sant helms the film from an original screenplay
written by John Krasinski & Matt Damon, from a story by Dave Eggers.
Steve has been dispatched to the rural town of McKinley with his sales partner, Sue Thomason (Academy
Award winner Frances McDormand). The town has been hit hard by the economic decline of recent years, and
the two consummate sales executives see McKinley’s citizens as likely to accept their company’s offer – for
drilling rights to their properties – as much-needed relief. What seems like an easy job and a short stay for the
duo becomes complicated – professionally by calls for community-wide consideration of the offer by respected
schoolteacher Frank Yates (Academy Award nominee Hal Holbrook) and personally by Steve’s encounter with
Alice (Rosemarie DeWitt). When Dustin Noble (John Krasinski), a slick environmental activist, arrives, suddenly
the stakes, both personal and professional, rise to the boiling point.
Director GUS VAN SANT and writer/actor MATT DAMON will be in Berlin to present the film.
SYNOPSIS:
If you build the foundations of peace . . . will it come?
STATE 194
PANORAMA DOKUMENTE
This fascinating question lies at the heart of STATE 194, a vital and revealing look deep inside Israel and
Palestine at the men and women trying to seize an historic opportunity to end the conflict and make
implementing the two-state solution a reality right now. From the halls of power, across youthful social
networks and on the streets, it is a remarkable story of those who are attempting to transform an endangered
thread of hope into something tangible.
This journey-still-in-progress begins with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who in 2009 launched a
daring campaign to change his people’s destiny. For decades, acts of war and terror, political wrangling and
diplomacy have failed to solve the territorial disputes of the region; settle the questions of Palestinian
independence and Israeli security; or halt ongoing violence. But Fayyad envisioned a different approach.
Taking his surprising inspiration from the Israeli battle for U.N. recognition in 1948 – which centered on
building the bedrock of civil society to demonstrate their readiness to be a nation -- he forged an ambitious 2year
plan to pave roads, raise schools and fast-track creating the core institutions of governance across the
West Bank. Fayyad decided even if statehood was stalled, progress didn’t have to be. The plan achieved rapid
and dramatic improvements in key development areas, leading President Mahmoud Abbas to take a different
risk: presenting the case to the United Nations that Palestine was ready to become the 194th member nation.
Participant Media presents STATE 194 directed by Dan Setton and produced by Setton and Elise Pearlstein.
The executive producers are Jeff Skoll and Diane Weyermann. The film features cinematography by Hanna
Abu Saada and Yoram Millo; editing by Brian Johnson and Ariel Setton; and music by Michael Brook.
Director DAN SETTON will be in Berlin to present the film.
SYNOPSIS:
CAPTURING DAD
GENERATION
Her husband may be dying but the girls’ mother seems quite unmoved. She’s never been able to forgive him
for having left her for another woman years ago. And so, rather than going herself she decides to send her two
daughters, aged 17 and 20, to his deathbed. They are to bid their father a fitting farewell, even though they
can barely remember him. But when the girls finally arrive their father has already died.
The two young women stick out like sore thumbs in their summer dresses amongst all their black-clad
relatives. At the funeral they find themselves having to cope with an onslaught of encounters including an
overly friendly uncle, a hostile aunt and a blind grandmother who gets far too close for comfort. Luckily there’s
also a delightful young half-brother, about whose existence the girls knew nothing at all.
Time and again they find themselves asking the same questions: who was their father? And – are we like him?
A film about family ties and the absence of relationships; about bidding farewell to the departed, anger and
reconciliation.
Director RYOTA NAKANO and actresses ERISA YANAGI and NANOKA MATSUBARA will be in Berlin to present
the film.
SYNOPSIS:
LOVELACE
PANORAMA SPECIAL
From Academy Award® winning directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (HOWL, THE CELLULOID CLOSET)
comes the true story of fame, abuse and betrayal set against the sexual revolution of the 1970s. Starring
Amanda Seyfried and Golden Globe nominee Peter Sarsgaard, along with an all-star cast including Emmy
Award winner Hank Azaria, Wes Bentley, Adam Brody, Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale, Academy Award®
nominee James Franco, Debi Mazar, Golden Globe nominee Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Eric Roberts, Academy
Award® nominee Sharon Stone, Academy Award® nominee Chloe Sevigny and Juno Temple.
In 1972—before the internet, before the porn explosion—Deep Throat was a phenomenon: the first scripted
pornographic theatrical feature film, featuring a story, some jokes, and an unknown and unlikely star, Linda
Lovelace. Escaping a strict religious family, Linda discovered freedom and the highlife when she fell for and
married charismatic hustler Chuck Traynor. As Linda Lovelace she became an international sensation—less
centrefold fantasy than a charming girl-next-door with an impressive capacity for fellatio. Fully inhabiting her
new identity, Linda became an enthusiastic spokesperson for sexual freedom and uninhibited hedonism. Six
years later she presented another, utterly contradictory, narrative to the world—and herself as the survivor of
a far darker story.
Directors ROB EPSTEIN and JEFFREY FRIEDMAN and actors AMANDA SEYFRIED and PETER SARSGAARD will
be in Berlin to present the film.
Based on true events related to the life of Taiwanese piano prodigy HUANG Yu Siang (Siang played by himself),
THE LOOK OF LOVE
BERLINALE SPECIAL GALA
Michael Winterbottom’s “THE LOOK OF LOVE” stars Steve Coogan (24 Hour Party People, The Trip) in the truelife
story of Paul Raymond, the man behind Soho’s notorious Raymond Revue Bar and Men Only magazine.
Paul Raymond began his professional life with an end of the pier mind-reading act. He soon realized that the
audience were more interested in watching his beautiful assistant, and that they liked it even more if she was
topless. He quickly became one of Britain’s leading nude revue producers. In 1958 he opened his Revue Bar in
Soho, the heart of London’s West End. As it was a private club, the nudes were allowed to move. A huge
success, it became the cornerstone of a Soho empire, prompting the Sunday Times in 1992 to crown him the
Richest Man in Britain. The film focuses on Raymond's relationships with the three most important women in
his life: his wife Jean (Anna Friel), his lover Fiona (Tamsin Egerton) and his daughter Debbie (Imogen Poots). It
is a modern day King Midas story, with Raymond acquiring fabulous wealth, but at the cost of losing the
people who are closest to him.
Director Michael Winterbottom and cast-members Steve Coogan, Imogen Poots, Anna Friel and Tamsin
Egerton will be in Berlin to present the film, along with screenplay writer Matt Greenhalgh and producer
Melissa Parmenter.
GMO OMG
CULINARY CINEMA
Who controls the future of your food? GMO OMG explores the systematic corporate takeover and potential
loss of humanity’s most precious and ancient inheritance: seeds. Director Jeremy Seifert investigates how loss
of seed diversity and corresponding laboratory assisted genetic alteration of food affects his young children,
the health of our planet, and freedom of choice everywhere. GMO OMG follows one family’s struggle to live
and eat without participating in an unhealthy, unjust, and destructive food system. In GMO OMG, the
encroaching darkness of unknown health and environmental risks, chemical toxins, and food monopoly meets
with the light of a growing global movement to take back what we have lost. Has the global food system been
irrevocably hijacked? Is there still time to reclaim its purity, protect biodiversity and save ourselves?
THE BEST OFFER
BERLINALE SPECIAL GALA
Virgil Oldman is managing director of a leading auction house. He is a man with his own individual style who
regularly dyes his hair, never goes out without his finest leather gloves and tries to reveal as little as possible of
his emotional world. In a secret hall inside the villa in which he lives alone, he has collected hundreds of
masterful, priceless paintings from many different eras. He has succeeded in acquiring these paintings, all of
them portraits of women, during his own auctions with the help of his old friend Billy. One day, Oldman
receives a special assignment: a mysterious young woman, who refuses to appear in person, asks him to sell
her family’s antiques. But Oldman is not only interested in the classical painting, furniture and material on
offer. He becomes increasingly fascinated by the mysterious incognito woman, who will only communicate
with him from behind thick walls and heavy doors.
Giuseppe Tornatore directs his stylish film about passions, neuroses and intrigue with panache and a sense of
morbid sophistication. He has chosen to set his plot’s surprising twists and turns in picturesque locations in
Bolzano, Merano, Vienna and Prague.
KAI PO CHE
(BROTHERS FOR LIFE)
PANORAMA SPECIAL
Ahmedabad in Gujarat has always been a unique city in India; its characteristics were carved in stone centuries
ago. Mysterious labyrinths and secret passages unite the ancient quarters, in which Ishaan, Omi and Govind
grew up. At the beginning of the film, the three rather different friends decide to make their dream come true
by turning their passion for cricket into business. From scratch, yet with a vision, they build a cricket academy
for the players of tomorrow. Time seems to be on their side until heavy communal violence between Hindus
and Muslims erupts all over Gujarat in February 2002. Kai Po Che recalls one of the darkest chapters in recent
Indian history in an emotional story of friendship and betrayal that captures its forebodings as well as the
painful aftermath. Skilfully merging traditional elements of mainstream Indian filmmaking, a sensitive score
and exquisite use of unique locations, Kai Po Che stands out as an example of modern cinema from Bollywood.
It deals with India’s reality in a distinctive manner, and is surprisingly different in its ambition to bring back to
public debate events which were almost forgotten and covered up for too long.
Director ABHISHEK KAPOOR and producers RONNIE SCREWVALA and SIDDHARTH ROY KAPUR will be in
