MAMA AFRICA
PANORAMA DOKUMENTE
MAMA AFRICA is the biography of Miriam Makeba, South African singer and anti-apartheid
activist, the voice and the hope of Africa.
Miriam Makeba was an incredible person. She was the first black African musician who won
international stardom and whose music - that influenced artists across the globe - was always
anchored in her traditional South African roots, as was her ceaseless message against racism
and poverty.
Miriam Makeba was forced into a life in exile, after exposing the harsh realities of apartheid for
the first time internationally through her participation in the 1959 documentary “COME BACK
AFRICA”. She sang for John F. Kennedy and Marlon Brando, performed with Harry Belafonte,
Nina Simone and Dizzie Gillespie, was married to Hugh Masekela and also Stokely Carmichael.
Her life was tumultuous. She always stood for truth and justice. She fought for the oppressed
most importantly for black Africans, as a campaigner against apartheid.
She died after collapsing immediately after leaving the stage at a concert in the Southern Italian
town of Castel Volturno in November 2008. Makeba was 76. This documentary, directed by
Mika Kaurismäki, traces her life and music through more than fifty years of performing. Using
rare archive footage of her performances, interviews and intimate scenes filmed over the years,
we are shown a unique person, a world icon. Friends and colleagues, some who knew her since
she started performing in the dance halls of South Africa (remember “Pata Pata”), together with
her grandchildren Zenzi Monique Lee and Nelson Lumumba Lee, allow us know the remarkable
journey of Miriam Makeba, “Mama Africa”.
Director Mika Kaurismäki will be in Berlin to present the film.
RED DOG
GENERATION 14 PLUS
Dampier in Western Australia in 1971; there’s good money to be earned working for Hamersley
Iron. Miners, steelworkers, crawler excavator drivers – workers from all over the world come
here to sweat away. When the sun goes down, these grafters make their way to the industrial
hick town’s only pub where they drink, recall their homes and get involved in fights. They can
really use a vent for all that anger and frustration. But this particular night things are somewhat
quieter than usual. In the back room a dog is drawing its last breath. But this isn’t just any old
cur, this is Red Dog, a dog everybody here knows and loves and about whom everyone has a
story to tell.
When Red Dog first turned up here, the pub at Dampier was a wild and desolate place. Drinkers,
bruisers, gamers and con-men – everyone who came here seemed to kick up a stink. And yet,
once a customer got to know Red Dog they were transformed. Take Peeto, for instance; the dog
seemed to bring out a softer, more sentimental side in this brash giant of a man that nobody
would have dreamed existed. Red Dog even helped Vanno, a lonely Italian, to find the love of his
life; moreover, the dog managed to make miner Jocko – a man with a dark past – learn how to be
a little friendlier. But then Red Dog lost his heart to John, a drifter who found a job working as a
bus driver for Hamersley Iron. Clearly, this was a case of love at first sight, and from that
moment on, Red Dog sat enthroned next to his master on the passenger seat. And it stayed that
way – even when Nancy distracted John’s attention for a while. But John was not long for this
world. Red Dog, who couldn’t understand this, parked himself outside John’s beach hut for
weeks, waiting for him to return. No doubt about it, Red Dog really is a character – and tonight
everyone is prepared to agree for once.
THE GUARD
PANORAMA SPECIAL
THE GUARD is a comedy-thriller set on the west coast of Ireland. Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan
Gleeson) is a small-town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a
dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the
international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle)
to his door.
However, despite the fact that Boyle seems more interested in mocking and undermining
Everett than in actively working to solve the case, Boyle finds that circumstances keep pulling
him back into the thick of it. First his tiresomely enthusiastic new partner disappears, then his
favourite hooker attempts to blackmail him into turning a blind eye, and finally the drugtraffickers
themselves try to buy him off as they have every other member of the local police
force.
These events unwittingly offend Boyle's murky moral code. He realises that he needs to take
matters into his own hands, and the only person he can trust is Everett. And so the scene is set
for an explosive finale.
SING YOUR SONG
SPECIAL SCREENING
Singer, actor, activist – over the past seventy years Harry Belafonte has had many roles. In fact,
the entertainer, who was born in New York in 1927, doesn’t even see himself as a singer – at
least not when he thinks of the singers that took to the stage in his day. He is an actor, he says,
whenever he is asked about his main profession – the best proof of this being the number of
people who believe him to be a singer. Easy-going understatement and ebullient friendliness are
the salient characteristics of his art. The young Belafonte’s greatest role model was singer, actor
and left-wing activist Paul Robeson, who once visited Belafonte’s dressing room to give him a
piece of advice: persuade the audience to sing your song, then they will feel what you feel and
share your conviction. His admiration for Robeson, who was persecuted in the USA on account
of his left-wing views, but also his friendship with Martin Luther King and the ubiquitous
discrimination against Afro Americans in the USA during the 1950s and 1960s to which black
celebrities were also subjected, are just some of the things that made Harry Belafonte one of the
most popular propagandists of the American civil rights movement. Harry Belafonte is still
politically active today, and his criticism of America’s foreign and social policies still causes a
stir. Susanne Rostock’s film follows the personal trajectory of this extraordinary artiste.
COME RAIN, COME SHINE
(SARANGHANDA, SARANGHAJI
ANNEUNDA)
IN COMPETITION
World Premiere
She is going on a business trip to Tokyo. In the car on the way to the airport she tells him that
she is leaving him. He seems to accept this. No questions, no confrontation.
Some time later. A severe storm sweeps through the city. The couple are spending their last day
together at the house where they have spent the last three years. Small things remind them of
shared memories and the life they once led. But neither of them tries to turn back the clock and
both appear to be reconciled to the situation. When the rain gets heavier, they discover a cat on
the roof of their storehouse and bring it in. Frightened, it escapes and hides. Shortly afterwards
the doorbell rings. It is the couple next door, looking for their cat. These unexpected guests
bring awkwardness into the house but, at the same time, they somehow also rekindle some of
the old feelings that have been dormant for so long. The phone rings. It’s the other guy, the one
she’s leaving him for. She hesitates and tells him she’s going to spend one more night at the
house; it’s because the bridge to the city is blocked due to the storm. Has she changed her mind?
The neighbours go home at last. The cat still hasn’t surfaced. They start preparing their last
supper together. Peeling the onions makes him cry. He goes to the bathroom to wash his face,
but he can’t stop crying. Is it really because of the onions? They have almost finished cooking
when the tremulous cat appears. She soothes the cat, or maybe herself: “Everything’s going to
be alright.”
