BEIJING FLICKERS
(YOU-ZHONG)
VANGUARD
Beneath the dazzling economic boom, exists the downtrodden and the forgotten “little” people that bear the weight of
life’s trials and injustices.
Beijing, 2012. San Bao is deserted by his girlfriend and fired by his employer in the same day. Worse still, his landlord has
also kicked him out of the shabby apartment he can barely afford and his dog “Lucky” has left him. In extreme distress, he
attempts to end his life by lying across the train tracks and later by eating a glass; but he survives both attempts. He ends
up in a hospital where he shares a ward with a transvestite poet/dancer with an attraction to plastic surgery. Later when
he is released, he finds that the predicament of his circle of close friends parallels his own - a spiral downwards from what
already seemed to be a pretty low point. Included in this group of Beijing outsiders are his best friend, a hotel car attendant
whose girlfriend has dumped him for a rich guy, a composer/pub singer whose band has dumped her for someone more
“connected” and his transvestite poet pal who is “not appreciated in his homeland”. Each, struggling with their
own life predicaments in the glamorous, prosperous, modern metropolis called Beijing, finds solace and support in each
other.
Director Zhang Yuan and actors Li Xinyun, Duan Bowen and Han Wenwen will be in Toronto to present the film.
EMPEROR
GALA PRESENTATION
A gripping tale of love and honor forged between fierce enemies of war, EMPEROR unfolds the story, inspired by
true events, of the bold and secret moves that won the peace in the shadows of post-war Japan. Matthew Fox joins
Academy Award® winner Tommy Lee Jones and newcomer Eriko Hatsune to bring to life the American occupation of Japan
in the perilous and unpredictable days just after Emperor Hirohito’s World War II surrender.
As General Douglas MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an
expert in Japanese culture – General Bonner Fellers (Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the
country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught
between the high-wire political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school
teacher (Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers can be certain only that the tricky subterfuge about to play out will
forever change the history of two nations and his heart.
EMPEROR is directed by Peter Webber, from a screenplay by David Klass and Vera Blasi, and produced by Yoko
Narahashi, Gary Foster, Eugene Nomura and Russ Krasnoff.
Director Peter Webber, cast members Matthew Fox, Tommy Lee Jones, and Eriko Hatsune will be in Toronto to present
the film.
HYDE PARK ON HUDSON
GALA PRESENTATION
Client contact: Anna Bohlin / M +44 7983 570 899 / anna.bohlin@focusfeatures.com
SYNOPSIS:
Academy Award nominees Bill Murray and Laura Linney star in a historical tale that uniquely explores the all-toohuman
side of one of history’s iconic leaders. Blending literate wit and drama, Hyde Park on Hudson is directed by Roger
Michell from a screenplay by Richard Nelson.
In June 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Bill Murray) readies to host the King and Queen of England
(Samuel West and Olivia Colman) for a weekend at the Roosevelt home at Hyde Park on Hudson, in upstate New York –
marking the first-ever visit of a reigning British monarch to America. As Britain faces imminent war with Germany, the
royals are desperately looking to FDR for U.S. support.
But international affairs must be juggled with the complexities of FDR’s domestic establishment, as his wife
Eleanor (Olivia Williams), mother Sara (Elizabeth Wilson) and secretary Missy (Elizabeth Marvel) will all play a part in making
the royal weekend an unforgettable one.
Seen through the eyes of Daisy (Laura Linney), Franklin’s neighbour and intimate, the weekend will produce not
only a special relationship between two great nations, but, for Daisy – and through her, for us all – a deeper understanding
of the mysteries of love and friendship.
Director Roger Michell, screenwriter Richard Nelson and cast members Bill Murray, Laura Linney & Olivia Williams will be
in Toronto to present the film.
THE IMPOSSIBLE
SPECIAL PRESENTATION
A powerful story based on one family’s survival of the 2004 tsunami, THE IMPOSSIBLE stars Naomi Watts and Ewan
McGregor and is directed by J.A. Bayona (THE ORPHANAGE.)
Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking
forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool
after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in
fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her.
Based on a true story, THE IMPOSSIBLE is the unforgettable account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of
strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. But the true-life terror is tempered by the
unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria and her family encounter during the darkest
hours of their lives. Both epic and intimate, devastating and uplifting, THE IMPOSSIBLE is a journey to the core of the human
heart.
MIDNIGHT’S CHILDREN
GALA PRESENTATION
Midnight’s Children is an epic film from Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta, based on the Booker Prize
winning novel by Salman Rushdie. At the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, as India proclaims independence from
Great Britain, two newborn babies are switched by a nurse in a Bombay hospital. Saleem Sinai, the illegitimate son of a poor
woman, and Shiva, the offspring of a wealthy couple, are fated to live the destiny meant for each other. Their lives become
mysteriously intertwined and are inextricably linked to India’s whirlwind journey of triumphs and disasters. From the
unlikely romance of Saleem’s grandparents to the birth of his own son, Midnight’s Children is a journey at once sweeping in
scope and yet intimate in tone. Hopeful, comic and magical – the film conjures images and characters as rich and
unforgettable as India herself.
Director Deepa Mehta, author/writer Salman Rushdie and cast members Satya Bhabha and Siddarth will be in Toronto to
present the film.
MISS LOVELY
CITY TO CITY
Set against the colourfully garish, seedy and exotic backdrop of Bombay’s “C” movie business of the 1980’s when the
underbelly of Bollywood churned out sleazy social dramas, campy horror films and erotic bandit pictures with titles like
“Dolly Darling” and “Lady James Bond”, MISS LOVELY tells the tale of two brothers immersed in this universe who
eventually turn on each other in a sordid tale of betrayal, doomed love, jealously and revenge. MISS LOVELY is a tribute to
the Bollywood underground, an audacious cinema with wild Cinemascope compositions, lurid art directions, rollicking
background soundtracks and gut-wrenching melodrama.
STATE 194
TIFF DOCS
In 2009, Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad launched a plan to demonstrate that his people were deserving
TAI CHI 0
SPECIAL PRESENTATION
An uncommonly gifted child, Yang Luchan has an abnormal and expanding mark on his forehead that gives him
tremendous power. Bullied for his deformity, Yang’s mother encourages him to practice martial arts, and, following her
wishes, Yang travels to the distant Chen Village to learn the ancient art of TAI CHI.
Within this legendary village, everyone practices TAI CHI and uses it in all aspects of their lives. However, it is
forbidden for a villager to teach TAI CHI to an outsider, which Yang learns the hard way.
Upon arriving at the village, locals attempt to discourage Yang by challenging him to fight. Everyone, from strong
men to old ladies and children, defeat Yang through TAI CHI. After being defeated by Master Chen’s beautiful daughter
Yuniang in his toughest fight, Yang is determined to master the art of TAI CHI and decides to track down Master Chen.
Unbeknownst to Yang, the strange man who rescues him during his duel with Yuniang is, in fact, Master Chen.
Master Chen realizes Yang’s potential and disguises himself to secretly guide Yang to TAI CHI enlightenment.
One day, a frightening steam-powered machine arrives in the village, brought by Fang Zijing, a childhood friend of
Yuniang. He has bribed government officials to allow him to construct a railway that will run straight through the village.
Yang soon joins forces with Yuniang to defeat Fang Zijing and destroy the machine, a brave act that may just win the hearts
of the villagers.
Director Stephen Fung will be in Toronto to present the film.
SYNOPSIS:
WHAT MAISIE KNEW
GALA PRESENTATION
Drawing from classic American literature but rooted in today’s New York City, What Maisie Knew is an affecting portrait of a
family coming apart, as seen from the vantage point of a six-year-old girl who watches the adults around her behave like
children.
Susanna (Julianne Moore) is a pushy but seductive rock and roll icon married to Beale (Steve Coogan), a charming,
distracted art dealer. Unnerved by the prospect of middle-aged stasis and drawn to other lovers, the couple eventually
divorces. Maisie (Onata Aprile), their only child, is caught in the middle of it all, a flesh-and-blood bargaining tool who winds
up being shuttled back and forth between her parents as they each attempt to start their lives afresh with new partners.
Quietly precocious and a keen observer, Maisie begins to understand how essentially selfish, irresponsible and damaged
her parents really are. With time their new relationships disintegrate as well, and Maisie is forced to consider whether or
not she should try to construct for herself a whole new family altogether.
Co-directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel and actresses Julianne Moore and Onata Aprile will be in Toronto to
present the film.
