The bare ground of cropped l<strong>and</strong> in the autumn, another category<br />

which is excluded. There are no species present on the l<strong>and</strong> on the<br />

left of the photograph, although the narrow strip of grassl<strong>and</strong> in<br />

the centre would be included as a boundary plot.<br />

A photograph of sea beet (Beta maritima). Such plots were<br />

excluded from the CVS <strong>and</strong> are not covered by the plot allocation<br />

Vegetation that was included in the survey but which has a high<br />

degree of internal complexity. It is along the edge of a road which<br />

has been regularly treated with salt, so that the vegetation on the<br />

immediate edge of the road is relatively sparse. Further back there<br />

is a cover of perennial rye-grass (Lolium perenne), common couch<br />

(Elymus repens) <strong>and</strong> daisy (Bellis perennis). Such complex<br />

vegetation though rather hetrogeneous, would be correctly<br />

allocated by the Countryside Vegetation System.<br />

A comparable situation in the west of Scotl<strong>and</strong>, with vegetation<br />

dominated by sea campion (Silene maritima). Localised vegetation
