Avada’s Good to Great Q & A
Kurt Trede
National Sales
Trainer Oticon
A. Understanding Directionality in Avada’s
AI Products: in general, directionality in hearing
instruments has been shown to improve the
S/N ratio for patients in some situations and is
therefore a desirable feature. However, there
are many new and more complex forms of directionality
and one must understand the differences
in order to know how to best fit the patient
and employ various types of directionality.
Why offer Split Directionality? With Full Directionality,
if the switching to directional takes
place at moderate input levels, there is a significant
drawback of poor sound quality. In other
words, full band directionality inherently causes
a roll-off in the LFs which leads to a dramatic
sense of a loss of loudness. However when
LF gain is increased to compensate for this, it
raises the internal noise level in the hearing instruments,
and is perceived as “circuit noise” or
“poor sound quality” by the patient. Most products
from other manufacturers have Full Directionality
as their only option. In order to protect
against degraded sound quality, they only offer
this full directionality at high input levels. This
means patients are not able to take advantage
of the benefits of directionality at moderate input
Q. Why is directionality implemented in
hearing instruments?
levels. No matter how many channels or bands
of directionality the aid offers, if it only kicks into
directional at high inputs, the patient may be in
many situations where he is not able to benefit
from directionality.
Avada products provide a much more comprehensive
and complex plan for directionality
by offering “Split Directionality” (also known as
HF Direct in some of our earlier products) as
well as Full Directionality. Split Directionality
allows the hearing instruments to provide the
benefits of directionality at moderate input levels,
not just loud levels, without the drawbacks
that Full Directionality would create at these
levels.
In fact, our analysis of the performance of directionality
on real patients using the Activity
Analyzer indicates that the hearing instruments
are in the Split Directional mode far more often
than the Full Directional mode. People are
more likely to spend time in moderate environments
than louder sound environments.
PCC of the Month: Jewel Neuberger,
Westerville, Ohio
Jewel Neuberger is
our PCC in the Westerville
office of the Central
Ohio Region in Columbus.
Jewel joined our
team three years ago
with high expectations
but no experience in
our profession.
Having to transition
from her previous career pathway to hearing
care was not an easy one but Jewel “dove
right in” quickly becoming well versed in the
advantages of Goldmine utilities and the importance
of the services we provide.
On numerous occasions Jewel has expressed
heartfelt joy, stating “the coolest part
of my job is, I get to really help people. It’s
so nice to see someone’s life change so dramatically
after they are fitted with a hearing
system.”
Teaming up with her clinician Tammi
Brooks, Jewel has found much success by
digging deeply into the patient records and
even in her least favorite task of calling the
“outside lists.”
During the last three months Jewel has
made many phone calls resulting in $75K
worth of sales selling 29 units!
Perhaps the most unique role Jewel has
adopted is that of the Regional Director of
Motivation!
Each month she faithfully tabulates our
sales performances for each clinician, sending
out a spreadsheet with their respective
levels of sales to goals. As we get closer, the
messages of encouragement become stronger,
what a great motivating factor when it
doesn’t come down from above but rather
from “within”.
Jewel Neuberger has evolved into a wonderful
asset for our region and our company;
I am pleased to be able to honor her as our
PCC of the Month.
