GREEK COINS ACQUIRED BY THE BRITISH MUSEUM<br />

IN 1888.<br />

DURING <strong>the</strong> year 1888 (Jan. Dec.) <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Coins in <strong>the</strong> British Museum has acquired, chiefly by<br />

l<br />

purchase, 455 coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greek class, 10 <strong>of</strong> which are<br />

gold <strong>and</strong> electrum, 217 in silver, <strong>and</strong> 228 in bronze. A<br />

description <strong>of</strong> noteworthy specimens among <strong>the</strong>se acqui-<br />

sitions is given in <strong>the</strong> following pages.<br />

Cunningham Collection (Bactrian, Indian, &c.), purchased by a<br />

special Parliamentary grant during <strong>the</strong> past year. This very<br />

important acquisition will probably be dealt with separately in a<br />

future number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Numismatic</strong> Chronicle. <strong>The</strong> Greek acquisitions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Coins during 1887 were described<br />
