State Council – Branch Delegates Meeting Next meeting: Saturday, 5 November 2011, 10:00am at City of Sydney RSL Club. The Executive Committee and Branch Delegates meet quarterly on the First Saturday of February, May, August and November each year. Minutes are mailed to each Branch Secretary. General Membership and Subscriptions Membership is open to anyone who has a love for writing – writers, whether amateur or professional – or anyone interested in promoting Australian literature. AFFILIATION FEES – $34pa Full Membership ($17 U18/Student Membership) – are due by 31 DECEMBER each year and should be paid to the Branch Treasurer where a member attends meetings. Please make cheques/money orders payable to Fellowship Aust Writers (exactly as written). Each Branch sets it own ANNUAL FEE from which the $34 (or $17) affiliation fees are forwarded to FAW State Council for costs involved with printing and mailing Writers Voice, public liability insurance and administration. ISOLATED WRITERS – $40pa ($45 overseas, $20 Youth U18) – pay their subscription direct to the FAW Isolated Writers’ Branch Convenor. Please make cheques/money orders payable to Fellowship Aust Writers (exactly as written) and mail to FAW Isolated Writers’ Convenor, Adrienne de Bouvier, PO Box 29, PINGELLY WA 6308. Enclose a SSAE if receipt is required. Writing Fellows FAW Writing Fellows are listed at . The broad criteria for this class of membership, are that the applicant should have had a substantial body of work published and should normally have been a member of the FAW for at least two years. A committee of the State Council adjudicates on each application, which should be forwarded to the Registrar of Writing Fellows, FAW State Council, PO Box 488, Rozelle NSW 2039. The application should: a) be accompanied by a $50.00 cheque, payable to ‘Fellowship Aust. Writers’. b) indicate the Branch where the applicant is currently a member and the number of years of FAW membership. c) have attached a list of published, performed or broadcast works, with dates and details of publication. Also list any literary prizes awarded, although such works may be unpublished. Unpaid contributions to newspapers etc. and selfpublished works (unless widely sold and acclaimed) should not be included. The onetime fee of $50.00 will be used to cover costs of administration and cost of certificate. Excess funds will be used to further the work of the FAW. If the application is unsuccessful, the cheque will be returned, perhaps with a suggestion to resubmit an application when a greater body of work has been published. Distinguished Service Award This annual award recognises FAW members confidentially recommended by their Branch Committees and approved by the DSA Assessment Committee. DSA members will be honoured in the following way: a ceremony will be held at the Annual Presentation Luncheon and the successful candidates will be presented with certificates acknowledging their outstanding service. In addition, a permanent Honour Roll in Writers’ Voice lists the names of recipients of the DSA. Guidelines for assessing recommendations for Distinguished Service Awards: 1. Recommendations must be as a result of a unanimous decision of a current Branch Committee. 2. Qualifications to include the following features: (a) Length of service as a current financial member to be at least ten (10) years. (b) Required to have a regular attendance record at Branch Meetings. (c) Required to have participated in activities organised by the Branch Committee on a regular basis for at least eight years or to have served on the Branch Committee for at least eight years. 3. All recommendations to be submitted to the DSA Assessment Committee, PO Box 488, Rozelle NSW 2039, by 30 June of each year. 4. A committee comprising the State President, the Vice President, the Secretary and the Treasurer will assess recommendations. The DSA Committee’s decision is final. When there are sufficient funds, Branches may approach State Council for an amount for a specific purpose. Without donations FAW cannot grow and achieve this aim. When a member makes a donation, a note of his/her Branch is made. FAW Manuscript Assessment Service Critical reading with general criticism, editing including interpolation of articles, short stories and novels. A fee of $45 for a sample assessment of 2 chapters and $25 for poetry up to six poems of no more than 60 lines each. A detailed quote for the critical assessment of the remaining work will be supplied should the author require further editorial or constructive advice. For manuscripts, please include a synopsis and approximate word count and a stamped selfaddressed envelope for return of all the assessments. State Council News ANNOUNCEMENT: ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS The Special General Meeting, held on 6 August 2011, unanimously passed a special resolution to adopt the amended Constitution of the Fellowship of Australian Writers NSW Inc. It conforms with the new Associations Incorporation Act of 2009 and the Associations Incorporation Regulation of 2010. The change to the objects/constitution has been registered by The Department of Fair Trading and takes effect from 16 August 2011. Henceforward the word “Regionals” will no longer be used, the word “Branches” has replaced it. There have been some small changes to the draft of the amended constitution which was sent out to Branches. These have been made in response to feedback which was always constructive. The registered constitution will be sent to all Branches and individual members may obtain a copy by emailing or phoning me. It gives me great pleasure to make this announcement. Helen Luidens (Public Officer) IMPORTANT: INFORMATION FOR ALL MEMBERS All subscriptions are due by 31 December 2011, and are to be paid to your branch Treasurer, who will then forward $34 for each member to the State Treasurer. All payments received by the end of December go into our “Early Bird” draw for $50.00. To help with our finances, please enclose a SSAE for return of your receipts. The March copy of Writers Voice is the last magazine issued to unfinancial members. If fees are not paid by 31 December, there will be no Writers Voice. Renewals must be forwarded to the state treasurer as soon as received. Current members, when renewing, must pay the whole year’s fee. Only new members pay half fee of $17 from 1st July. And from 1st October, for new members, payment is a quarter fee of $8.50. There is no such thing as membership for half a year, except for new members starting after 30 June. Lists are sent out every quarter to the branch treasurer, and should be returned to the Membership Secretary by the date specified. The aim of these lists is to keep the membership details up to date, and treasurers should note on them any changes of address, resignations, and new members. If they are returned by the proper date, every member will receive a copy of the next Writers Voice. Any last minute names of new members/renewals can be emailed to Membership Secretary with followup of money and list to the State Treasurer. Every year branches are asked to supply State Council with a copy of their annual financial statement. This can be checked and verified by any responsible person such as another branch’s treasurer/committee member and does not require to be audited by a qualified accountant. At the same time, treasurers are asked to supply names of any tutor/ speaker hired by their branch in the last 12 months, together with how much was paid to each one. This information is required for the GIO to assess our workers’ compensation premium for the next twelve months, and MUST be sent to the state treasurer by the end of January. INSURANCE. Any branch wanting a certificate of Currenty of the Public Liability insurance policy for their landlord, contact the state treasurer who will send one out. Probably for most of us this is not that exciting but as history has shown, you only need a strong leader in times of trouble and for an organisation like FAW NSW we need a strong constitution for the same reason. The constitution is a very easy to read document and should assist any Branch which may experience a problem. I have to admit to standing on the sidelines in this whole process and marvelling at the tenacity of Ken Challenor, Helen and Johan and the others who have participated over the years. Well it’s done and hopefully will last the organisation for many years as it is in line with the latest rules and regulations for our type of entity. So what does this mean for the rest of us? Firstly a revamp of the Membership and Branches’ packages, yes Branch not Regional anymore. This will be done as soon as possible and can I ask that these are made available for all members and especially office bearers in all the Branches. You will have the choice of photocopying the original or using the electronic format. Every Branch has a folder with the original in and so it will just require substituting the new pages. The last of the major administrative work has now been completed and so we can work on the future and how we can grow our organisation and support each other in our writing endeavours. Barbara Simmons, State Membership Secretary Marjorie Quinn’s Book Launch 10 December 2011 The MC for the Launch of The Years The Locust Hath Eaten (see cover story) will be our FAW President, Trevar Langlands. The NSW State Library’s Dixon Room is an excellent venue for a function such as this and the Saturday afternoon time slot will be appropriate for those of us who don’t like being out at night. Full details of the Launch will be included on the Open Invitation to all members from Kathy Berryman and Deb McMahon. Keep a lookout for it and please remember to RSVP to Deb or Kathy as numbers are limited.
