used as water hoisting machines, and even if at least half of them had been used in the<br />

worsted industry, about 20 steam engines had been directly employed as moving power in<br />

the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Riding</strong>’s woollen cloth industry in 1800. This figure raised within the next years<br />

(table 5), though there is no information about the number of water hoisting machines.<br />
