Wednesday 26 October – General Meeting at 20.00.
The Annual Prize Giving went without a hitch thanks to Cameron Still,
Jaet Moore and Shonagh Fleming. Mrs Vice Commodore, Elaine Turnbull,
presented the prizes. Once again Paddy, Eileen and staff produced a
fabulous buffet which was enjoyed by all. Photos and report next week.
Open Mic Night Raises the Roof . . .
Fiona McNeill and Dave Currie pulled out all the stops last Friday night to
make sure their first Open Mic Night of the Social
Season raised the roof - the capacity crowd weren't
disappointed!
Talented sisters Emma and Megan Murray had the
unenviable task of being first to take to the stage after
Fiona McNeill. Emma's bagpipe playing was just the thing
to start the night off on a nigh note, and Megan's
beautiful - unrehearsed - singing was an absolute
delight. Hope to see more of this popular pair in the
future. As the Open Mic events gain
in popularity, people come from
farther and farther afield to take
part. Friday night saw guests from Glasgow and
Edinburgh, Dunoon and Inverkip . . . and many points
between
Jonathan and Amanda Currie are a perfect example.
Amanda is studying in Edinburgh whilst Jonathan lives
and works in Glasgow. Despite the distance between
Dave's two talented offspring, you'd swear they had rehearsed for
weeks prior to their gig. Their polished guitar work and near-perfect
harmonies had the audience transfixed.

Mattie Hynds, as always, delighted the crowd with
her beautiful singing and Alan Roach was in fine
fettle as he took to the stage.Young Stephen Keenan
has always had talent. Now he's developing the
confidence to back it up! He appeared with young
Amelia Spragg whose lovely voice added another
dimension to the performance. Stephen is always a
popular turn at these evenings, and he and Amelia left the stage to
tumultuous, well-deserved applause.
There was something of a surprise when Chic Keenan
abandoned his usual brass instruments and turned up
with a keyboard . . . and daughter! Young Rihanna took
centre stage - you could have heard a pin drop as she
delivered a very polished performance indeed!
Got a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of this young
lady!
There's little that can be said about Reely Jiggered
that hasn't been said before. Their set, as always, was
tremendous. The standing ovation that followed spoke volumes. Thanks,
as always, to Alison, Fiona and Scott.
Such was the popularity of the night that we were victims of our own
success. We could only allocate one ten- minute slot per act. This left the
audience wanting more of many performers than there was time for. We
do intend to invite the most popular turns back early in the new year . . .
watch this space for details.
In the meantime, a very special thank you to
everyone who helped make the night such an
unforgettable, utterly enjoyable one, but
especially to Jim Currie and Charlie McGroarty,
Peter Wilkinson, Jim Byrne and the
Blackwoods, Stuart Anderson, Robert Harrison
and Allan Trotter and to Dermid and the
irrepressible Fandangos.
Fiona McNeill and Dave Currie should take a well-deserved bow! Photos by
Report Quiz Night – 18 October
Boab Hughes hosted last Tuesday night's Quiz with his usual aplomb. This
might be his first appearance of the season, but Boab's the most
experienced quiz master we have. He has dozens- nae hundreds- of Quiz
It was good to see the Starsweepers back - well, half of them anyway -
and Ken Fulford returned from his travels.
Thanks to Ken, the Firehuggers managed a win despite much heckling with
the quiz master who, despite his wealth of experience, came up with
questions like, "Are all metals metallic?" Mind-boggling stuff!
Boab for a stimulating evening!
