I would like to thank my committee members Bob Anderson, Bob Bridges and Alison Helm for
all of their support during my education at West Virginia University. Most specifically, I would
like to thank Bob Anderson whom is the chair of my committee. Without Bob, I would not be
the potter I am today. He pushed me, questioned me and forced me to search inside myself to
find my voice as an artist. I would also like to thank Joe Zeller who was interim faculty for the
2006-2007 school year. With out Joe Zeller, this thesis would just be an analysis of the
processes I explored while doing my graduate work. Joe helped shape the direction of this thesis
by urging me to combine business principles and analysis along with my ceramic work to take
the research beyond graduation. Exploring ceramics through the eyes of business principles,
creates a thesis that can, in-turn, help others following the same path. Last, I would like to give
a very special thanks to Chris Hollis Brown. Immediately upon arrival at WVU, Chris taught
me about studio management, studio efficiency and how to manage my time. Chris changed the
focus of my work and ultimately my career by teaching me with the jigger-jolly. Thank you for
