2005 Wyvern wins The Pride of Australia
Young Leader Medal Award
Young Leader Medal winner Kate Smith (2005)
The Pride of Australia Medal,
sponsored by the Herald Sun,
honours everyday Australians
who do extraordinary things in our
communities. They are our unsung
heroes whose contribution to the
Australian way of life is not widely
recognised. More than 700 Victorians
were nominated for the award.
Young Wyvern, Kate Smith (Arts/Science
2005), was amongst the nominees who
continued on to become a Finalist in the
Young Leader Medal category - awarded
to someone who has advanced a
community or will advance a community
through academic or personal endeavours.
During her school years in Queensland,
Kate supported a number of charities
Queen’s College The Wyvern Society Newsletter
including World Vision, the Red Cross, the
Cancer Council and the Guide Dogs. She
was the founding member of her school’s
Amnesty International Committee. Whilst
studying at the University of Melbourne
and residing at Queen’s, Kate was
involved in many environmental, social
justice and humanitarian causes. She has
also taught English to migrants, worked
in the St Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen,
assisted with the Regent Honeyeater
Project revegetation programme and
helped create wildlife corridors for sugar
gliders and possums.
Managing Director of the Herald and
Weekly Times, Peter Blunden said at
the Awards Ceremony at the MCG on
7 July: “To have been nominated as a
fi nalist, someone has been watching
Proud Mum Ros Pulley with the Young Leader
Medal awarded to her daughter Kate.
you and been inspired by what you do.
People such as Kate Smith are a powerful
affi rmation of the decency and goodwill
that is paramount in the community. The
winners are truly exceptional, but all those
nominated, and all the fi nalists, should
take pride in their contribution to the
strength and cohesion of our community.
Kate was a standout winner who has
dedicated her life to supporting worthy
causes”.
