HOCKWOLD CRICKET CLUB. A VIEW FROM THE GROUNDSMAN’S HUT!! I really cannot believe that by the time you read this article, our League season will be over for another year. With the exception of some yet to arrange friendly matches, that will be it. We seem to wait so long for the cricket season to come around; then it’s over in no time at all! The continuing poor weather has really destroyed our season, with the Saturday XI missing 4 out of the last 7 matches. This means we have dropped to fifth in our League table. With 1 match left we have played 15, won 5, lost 5 and cancelled 5. Sunday’s we have played 13, won 5, lost 2 and cancelled 6. Again, I have only a few matches to report on, but where we have played there has been some interesting results. On Saturday’s, against Fakenham we narrowly lost, chasing down 280 to win. We fell 4 runs short with 286-7. Against Thornham we amassed the massive total of 380-9, in our allotted 45 overs. 8 man Thornham could only manage 82 in reply. A convincing win by 298 runs!! On Sunday’s, we beat Mundford by 99 runs and then lost to Rocklands by 9 runs. We have had some fantastic performances in these last 4 matches, with Simon Groom highlighting with an amazing 168 against Thornham. Also in that match, Carl Smith scored his ever first half century, batting at number 10. Roy Bland has continued to score runs with 117 against Mundford and a 74 against Fakenham. Anthony Ruddick scored 61no. against Fakenham. David Spencer picked up 4 wicket against Fakenham, while Bert Marlow picked up 4 against Rocklands and Simon Groom 4 against Mundford. Our new pavilion is moving on well, with the roof now finished. With the scaffolding down you can really start to see the building at its best. Work on the interior is progressing well, and with the windows due on site shortly. This means the project will be watertight long before the Autumn/ Winter drought arrives!! We are again hosting the West Norfolk Cricket League President’s Match on Sunday 16 th . September. Starting at 1-00. Do come along and watch what the finest cricketers in West Norfolk have to offer! The bar will be open all afternoon and the BBQ will be on! Wednesday evening practice sessions are now underway from 5.30. If you are interested in getting involved, young of old, do come down or alternatively give John a call on 827098.
