NEWS NOTES
February 15, 2008
The MSW Program receives a $75,000 Grant from Hartford Foundation
as Part of Nationwide Initiative to Grow the Social Work Workforce
Needed for Aging Boom
The MSW program has been awarded a $75,000 grant over three years to
develop an innovative program that prepares social workers to specialize in older
adult care. Augsburg will adopt a model developed by the New York Academy of
Medicine’s Social Work Leadership Institute, with support from the John A.
Hartford Foundation. Called the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging
Education, the program addresses the growing demand for social workers as
the nation’s aging population is expected to more than triple by 2050.
The grant will support, through a scholarship and additional learning
opportunities, the advanced field placement work of 2nd year Master's of Social
Work students specializing in serving older adults. Augsburg's unique
contribution will be to focus on older adults of color. Augsburg was selected, in
consortium with the University of Minnesota, in a competitive national peerreview
process. Many thanks to Christina Erickson, Lois Bosch, Laura Boisen,
Tony Bibus, Nancy Rodenborg, and Carol Forbes for their work on this.
Successful Search Process = New Faculty Member!
Ankita Deka was offered and accepted Dean Farley's offer of employment at
Augsburg and will be joining us as Assistant Professor in fall 2008. She was excited
and pleased to receive this offer. She stated throughout the interview process that
Augsburg was her first choice for employment. She was attracted to our social
justice orientation and global focus, among other things.
Thank you to the search committee members, especially Treana Mungovan (MSW
student) and Derek Pederson (BSW student) for the hard work!
Professional Panel a BIG success—AGAIN!
BSW News
The Professional Panel hosted by the BSW Forum and Emceed
by Megan Carlson took place in the Minneapolis Room. The Professional
Panel gives BSW degree seekers an opportunity to ask questions about
the real job of social work before they enter the job market. Students in
the senior and junior classes asked questions. This year’s panelists were
sterling, no better than sterling—gold! Each panel member represented
a field of practice selected by the junior and senior classes; Schools-Kaye
Ann Mason, Brooklyn Ctr. HS, Criminal Justice-Barb Ritchie, Hennepin
County Juvenile Probation, Clinical Caroline Schultz, Healthcare-Amanda
Thoft, St. Joseph’s HealthEast, Development Disabilities-Kay Reis,
CommonBond Communities and Augsburg’s very own, Kendra Roberg for
Child Welfare through her work at Hearthstone of Minnesota. The panelists represented a combined 75
years in social work experience. Special thanks to Maggie Sponsel as the representative of the sophomore
class.
BSW Forum Meeting
The next Forum meeting is Thursday Feb 21, 5:15 to 6:15 in
Memorial 23. Some agenda items: Review/analysis of Professional
Panel surveys, issues that may have not received enough attention—
with time left in the year to affect change. The next thing: the Steen
Torstenson Senior Award.
Orientations to the Junior and Senior Year
Sophomores: Applying to the Major
Next week you will be receiving an invitation to the orientation to
the major next March. Please be sure to keep Wednesday, March
12 3:30-5:00PM open on your calendar.
Juniors: Orientation to the Senior Year
If you are going to be a senior next fall you will need to come to the
orientation to find out what you will have to do. Next week you will
be receiving an invitation to the orientation to the major next March.
Please be sure to keep Wednesday, March 5:05-6PM open on your
calendar.
Both orientations will be held in Sverdrup 102. Will there be food?
Maybe, maybe not…
BSW Member for NASW Board
The NASW is still seeking an undergraduate board member. Maybe
it can be you! We need a current junior BSW student or an MSW
student (that will be an MSW from summer 2008 to summer of
2009) to run for the MN NASW Board of Directors. Both MSW and
BSW student representatives serve a one year term, summer of
2008 to summer of 2009. At Large members meet monthly. Also,
both BSW and MSW students are also able to run for the
Nominations Committee. Members on this committee serve a 2-year
term and meet starting in the fall and usually into mid-spring,
depending on how difficult it is to locate candidates, and about once
a month. Nominations Committee members recruit members of
NASW to run for the board of directors. Anyone who is interested
can contact me at this email address (msteans1860@msn.com) or
612-227-3273. Being on the board is a great opportunity to not only
meet new people and to network, but also to be a voice for social
work across the state of MN.
The Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Social
Workers (NASW-MN) is seeking students to serve on the
chapter board and other committees. The student board rep.
commits to attend the board meetings (roughly once a month
if I remember right) and if they are on committees, there
might be a monthly meeting and some between meeting
tasks and communication -- the experience of working with
the other board members (who often are potential mentors,
networking resources and even employers!) is invaluable, and
the opportunity to advocate for social work from the students'
perspective gives special oooomph and power to one's
resume. If interested, contact Molly Stean, Augsburg alumna
The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular
attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social
work is the profession’s focus on individual well-being in a social context and the well-being of society. --- NASW
