The Varzuga outcrop was studied by a number of researchers (M. A. Lavrova, A. D. Armand, R. M. Lebedeva, A. A. Nikonov, N. I. Apukhtin, V. Ya. Yevzeroy V. I. Gudina and others). Most of the investigators consider the lower marine sequence (Ponoi Beds) as Boreal in age. Accumulation of the next thick layer of marine deposits (Strel'na marine beds) is considered to have taken place during the Boreal transgression by some (e.g. Armand, Lebedeva 1966;
