One of the things that theatre does 

best is to draw us into a secret 

– either revealing it to us as the characters themselves find out, or letting us 

in on it early so we can watch the proceedings from a wonderfully omnipotent 

standpoint. This season’s playbill is full of secrets of both kinds, covering all the 

really interesting stuff – sex, money, politics and even murder! 

Shaw’s classic Mrs Warren’s Profession pits mother and daughter against 

one another as the secret of Mrs Warren’s past and the source of her daughter 

Vivie’s upscale upbringing is revealed. A newly discovered piece, Githa Sowerby’s 

The Stepmother, turns the popular notion of an evil stepmother on its head as we 

watch two daughters and their loving stepmother discover the treachery of their 

father and husband. An Inspector Calls, J.B. Priestley’s classic drama, takes an 

entire family’s hidden histories to a most shocking conclusion, and Lillian Hellman 

gives us a gloriously gothic family whose manipulations and machinations earn 

them the title of The Little Foxes. 

Secrets abound in A Little Night Music, Stephen Sondheim’s delightful meditation 

on loves lost and won, and a lost generation wrestles to discover who they really 

are in Terence Rattigan’s neglected jewel, After the Dance. And as for Ann-Marie 

MacDonald’s hugely popular Belle Moral – what or who is the secret in the attic? 

Let the notion of guilty secrets slide to not-so-guilty pleasures and simply 

revel in the deliciously manic world of Ferenc Molnár’s The President, soak in 

the music of Leonard Bernstein and a bohemian New York full of energy and 

dreams in Wonderful Town, and take advantage of an extra Sondheim treat 

– a concert version of Follies. And finally, enjoy Shaw’s hilarious discourse on 

the institution that creates all of the families above – Getting Married.

A spring evening,1912, and the prosperous Birling 

family has gathered for an intimate dinner. Their 

daughter’s engagement to a fine young man of means 

is the cause for celebration, but the festivities are 

interrupted when a police inspector unexpectedly 

calls. He is looking into the death of a young woman, 

and as Inspector Goole questions each member 

of the family, skeletons come clattering out of the 

closet and a remarkable web of connections unfolds.

about to embark on her own career, her mother decides 

that it is time for her feminist daughter to finally learn 

the truth about her mother’s profession. The shocking 

news sets the stage for a battle royal between mother 

and daughter about sex, love, money and morality.

with his young stepmother. Under the mystical lights of 

Sweden’s midnight sun, loves are lost and found, longed 

for and forgotten, all set to some of musical theatre’s 

most enduring songs – including the classic “Send in 

the Clowns.” Based on the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles 

of a Summer Night, the original production won five 

Tony Awards including Best Musical.

and Bette Davis, who starred in the 1941 movie.

political questions with a poetry that charts the 

complex relationships among that region’s peoples. 

Miss Helen, a reclusive, elderly Afrikaner, has spent

a battle of wills erupts. 

Feminist, socialist, satirist – British playwright 

Caryl Churchill has explored issues of modern 

life since the 1970s, often in an unconventional 

way. This play takes us into the world of the 

London Stock Market in the 1980s in a wickedly

Canadian Jason Sherman’s plays are remarkable

From Toronto, follow the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) 

toward <strong>Niagara</strong>. Once across the Garden City Skyway at 

St Catharines, take the <strong>Niagara</strong>-on-the-Lake exit (38b). 

From the traffic light at York Road turn left onto York Road, 

then right onto Airport Road. At Highway 55 turn right and 

follow 55 (<strong>Niagara</strong> Stone Road) until it ends at the golf 

course. Turn right into downtown <strong>Niagara</strong>-on-the-Lake. 

There you’ll find the Royal George Theatre and the Court 

House Theatre; the Festival Theatre is two blocks farther on. 

From Detroit, take highways 401 and 403 to Hamilton, 

Ontario, and join the QEW toward <strong>Niagara</strong>. Then follow 

the same route as the traffic from Toronto (see above). 

From New York, Ohio or Pennsylvania, cross the <strong>Niagara</strong> 

River into Canada at Buffalo, at <strong>Niagara</strong> Falls, or at Lewiston, 

NY. Take the QEW to Highway 55, then follow the same 

route as the traffic from Toronto (see above). 

> By Air 

The nearest major airports are at Toronto and Buffalo, NY. 

<strong>Niagara</strong> Airbus and Southampton Limousine provide 

door-to-door ground transportation from both these 

airports. Flights also come into the Hamilton airport.
