NOVEMBER 2010
ON The COveR
26 Paul Motian
Rhythm Of The Moment
By KEN MicAllEf
Motian is one of the most prolific
and imaginative drummer/leaders
in jazz today. He never leaves
Manhattan and doesn’t have to.
Musicians who want to play and
record with him journey to New
York, where Motian holds court
at the Village Vanguard, Cornelia
Street Café, the Jazz Standard,
Birdland and the Blue Note. But
regardless of the gig, Motian
never really changes. Some see
him as the ultimate swinger,
others as an anarchist bent on
meeting his once throwaway
comment to “destroy jazz.”
