“<strong>The</strong>y used <strong>to</strong> sleep but little by night [invoking <strong>the</strong>ir Lord (Allah) and praying, with fear<br />
and hope]{17} And in <strong>the</strong> hours before dawn, <strong>the</strong>y were (found) asking (Allah) for forgive-<br />
ness{18}.” (Adh-Dhariyat).<br />
Moreover, night prayer is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger’s Sunnahs by which Allah, <strong>the</strong> exalted,<br />
commanded him as Allah saying:<br />
( 5 4 3 2 1 0 / . - , + * ) ( ' & % $ # " ! )<br />
“O you wrapped in garments (i.e. Prophet Mohammad)! {1} Stand (<strong>to</strong> pray) all night, ex-<br />
cept a little {2} Half <strong>of</strong> it, or a little less than that, {3} Or a little more. And recite <strong>the</strong> Qur’an<br />
(aloud) in a slow, (pleasant <strong>to</strong>ne and) style {4}.” (Al-Muzzammil).<br />
In addition, <strong>the</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> God mentioned it in his tradition as it is narrated by Abu<br />
Haraira that <strong>the</strong> Messenger said: “<strong>The</strong> best prayer after <strong>the</strong> obliga<strong>to</strong>ry prayers is <strong>the</strong> night<br />
prayer (Qiyam prayer).” (Sahih Muslim). And <strong>the</strong> Messenger Mohammad (peace & blessings<br />
be upon him) praised his companion Abdul Allah ben Amro as he said: “<strong>The</strong> best man is<br />
Abdul Allah if he prays <strong>the</strong> night prayer.” And in ano<strong>the</strong>r narration he said: “Don’t be like<br />
<strong>the</strong> one who was praying <strong>the</strong> night prayer and left it.”<br />
1. Deeds related <strong>to</strong> fasting:<br />
A-General voluntary fasting:<br />
It was narrated by Abu Said al Khudri that <strong>the</strong> Messenger Mohammad said: “For every<br />
servant <strong>of</strong> God who fasts one day for God’s sake, <strong>the</strong>n God Almighty will distance his face<br />
from <strong>the</strong> Fire by seventy years.” (Sahih Muslim). And it was narrated by Abu Huraira that<br />
<strong>the</strong> Prophet mentioned <strong>the</strong> Holy tradition <strong>of</strong> Allah that Allah <strong>the</strong> Almighty says: “All <strong>the</strong><br />
deeds <strong>of</strong> Adam’s sons (people) are for <strong>the</strong>m, except Sawm (fasting) which is for Me, and I<br />
will give <strong>the</strong> reward for it.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari). And voluntary fasting is included in this<br />
tradition.<br />
Fasting is a <strong>to</strong>ol <strong>to</strong> protect Muslims from committing lewdness (sin) and prohibited ac-<br />
tions. It was narrated by Abdullah that he said, “We were in <strong>the</strong> company <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prophet<br />
