VIMY RIDGE, 1917 ARMISTICE 1918
BIRTH OF A NATION
On Easter Monday, April 9, 1917, 100,000 Canadian soldiers stormed and captured Vimy
Ridge in France. It was one of the great victories of World War I. Although the cost to
Canada was high - 3,600 dead and more than 7,000 wounded - historians say this victory
marked the birth of Canada as a nation. It was the first battle in which all units of the
Canadian Army fought together, and their success was overwhelming.
After the war the Canadian government determined the battle should always be
remembered, and decided to build a monument at Vimy Ridge. Reaching 40 metres into
the sky, the Vimy Memorial is made from 6,000 tons of white limestone. Resting on it are
20 figures that represent Canada’s soldiers and the principles they gave up their lives for.
The Members of The Royal Canadian Legion join with their neighbours across the
country to express our gratitude towards all members of the Canadian Forces, past and
present, by celebrating the courage and commitment
of those brave Canadians who fought and won the
impossible victory at Vimy Ridge.

Canada put forth a great effort in building the Vimy
Memorial as an eternal reminder of the sacrifice for
courage and principles. The Legion is renewing the
memory of that great event with a selection of items
including the Vimy t-shirt, made from 100% pre-shrunk

THE 11 TH HOUR, THE 11 TH DAY,
THE 11 TH MONTH
At the darkest hour before the dawn on
11 November 1918 a train car sat in a forest 50
kilometres north of Paris. Inside, a treaty was
signed to end hostilities that had ravaged
Europe for more than four years. Six hours
later, at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the
11th month, the guns fell silent. It was the
beginning of the end of the Great War, the
“War to End All Wars.”
As the news spread, there was celebration in
some places, but at the “Front,” where soldiers
stared at each other across “No Man’s Land,”
no one cheered. For certain, they were happy
to still be alive, but all around them, as far
as the eye could see, lay devastation beyond
belief. Culture in Europe, centuries in the
making, lay in ruins. Eight million people had
been killed. Those who survived laid down
their arms and returned to their homelands
with memories of fallen comrades—
memories that would never leave them.
The following year, King George V declared
11 November to be Armistice Day—later to
be known as Remembrance Day—a day
to remember all those who had made the
supreme sacrifice in service to their country.
Subsequently it grew to become an annual
tradition, increasing in significance after
World War II.
Canada was profoundly affected by the
events of World War I. A generation of young
Canadians had experienced life changing
events and had seen their comrades perish.
Even those Canadians who did not go to war
were affected by the loss of friends or family
members. The tradition of Remembrance,
and its perpetuation, on 11 November grew
out of the grief we feel and our need to care
for those who return from war and whose
lives are changed forever.
Today, more than 90 years after order and
sanity was restored to a world of chaos and
desperation, we are reminded of the sacrifices
that were made and are still being made,
summed up in the Royal Canadian Legion’s
enduring motto—Lest We Forget.
