MARGARET MARGIN CALL L’ATALANTE SHAME Thank you, thank you, thank you... Introduction Well, it’s looking mighty likely that 2011 will go down as the most successful year in Filmhouse history – in terms of your bottoms on our seats – and I’d like to sincerely thank you all for helping us make it so. It’s a hoary old chestnut I know, but never less than completely true – we could not do lm (which I occasionally get to do), it would be way less fun without you – not to mention rather less practical! If I seem a little obsessed by the numbers at times, I apologise, but the fact of the matter is that every time you visit us and buy a cinema ticket, a cup of tea, a glass of wine, a fine ale, a chickpea curry (my personal favourite) or a DVD, every penny we make goes straight back into the business of bringing you the finest world cinema in an environment conducive to the appreciation of the world’s favourite art form, and allows us to continue all the educational and community work at the very heart of our venture. If you like, The King’s Speech pays for a season of realist cinema from Weimar Germany. So, thanks again... and thanks, Colin Firth! Steve McQueen’s Shame is undoubtedly one of the highlights of our January programme. His stunning, compelling, uncompromising follow up to 2008’s Hunger stars Michael Fassbender, who delivers a bold, fearless performance as a man forced to confront his sex addiction upon the arrival in town of his messed-up sister, played with equal conviction by Carey Mulligan. Margin Call is a superbly crafted financial thriller set the day before the 2008 crisis and stars an awesome cast of amongst others, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons and Paul Bettany; it’s very much in the David Mamet/Glengarry Glen Ross mould, and worthy of the comparison. The middle-aged employee of an arthouse cinema is forced to confront the real world when his workplace closes, in wee Uruguayan gem A Useful Life (bit close to the bone for some of us round here, that one!). And brilliant Czech surrealist Jan Svankmajer returns to our screens after a five-year absence with Surviving Life, an autobiographical tale told using his customary, and dazzling, combination of live action and animation. Never very far away from critics’ and filmmakers’ top ten lists, the BFI are re-releasing Jean Vigo’s masterpiece, L’Atalante, now in a form as close to that which the filmmaker originally intended – you can read more about that on page 8!
