Captivating rhythms, profoundly moving melodies and
winning hits with all-time-great potential distinguish the
music of John Rutter. No great effort is required: he
wrote his opera The Piper of Hamlin on the basis of the
rat-catcher legend, and it was originally intended for a
school performance.
Hard to believe but it now appears for the first time on
CD with the ECHO award-winning children and young
people from Bobbys Klassik and the Beethoven
Orchestra of Bonn.
Despite its popularity, Rutter’s music is absolutely
demanding and avails itself of means in keeping with its
times. The piper’s iridescent leitmotif is based on a
whole-tone scale and thus lends his appearance a touch
of the mysterious and magical. The scenes featuring
corrupt rat society are absolutely grotesque in their
exaggeration; they are situated somewhere between
march music and the hits of the 1920s.
A thoroughly engaging release recorded to MDG’s
customary high standards.
Ferdinando Paer (1771 – 1839) was an Italian composer
of Austrian descent known for his operas and oratorios.
Using the same subject matter as Beethoven did for his
Fidelio, his opera is called Leonora and received its world
premiere recording under Peter Maag for Decca, with a
star-studded cast that included Siegfried Jersualem and
Edita Gruberová.
Here, it receives its first release on CD. The score was
discovered by Maag in Parma, Paer’s birthplace.
Eloquence has been systematically releasing the
recorded repertoire of Peter Maag, and this is an
important step in that journey.
“Maag directs a piece for which he has an obvious
affection with a care for both its lyrical and histrionic
possibilities” Gramophone
Possibly the most thrilling, sexually-charged Walküre
ever recorded, this recording features the sappy voices
of Gré Brouwenstijn and Jon Vickers as Sieglinde and
Siegmund, and two of the leading Wagnerians of their
day – Nilsson and London – as Brünnhilde and Wotan.
Also look out for the wind machine introduced in the
Prelude to Act I! This is real aural theatre.
‘…an exciting, eloquent, lyrical, an always vital
account of the opera and draws splendid playing, of
which the conductor must have been proud, and we
should be, from the London Symphony Orchestra, all
departments of which distinguish themselves. …
GréBrouwenstijn gives a most musicianly, youthful
sounding and touching rendering of Sieglinde …
Nilsson is glorious here, but one hardly needs to praise
the greatest exponent of her part today … This
wonderful Brünnhilde has worthy partners in George
London’s Wotan and Jon Vickers’s Siegmund’
Gramophone
‘…one of the finest Wagnerian casts in recent memory
under a vastly experienced Ring conductor, and the
result is a triumph… Perhaps the chief credit must go
to the conductor, Erich Leinsdorf… possibly Leinsdorf’s
greatest achievement is the way in which he maintains
interest throughout the whole vast canvas. … and the
final pages are more thrilling than I have ever heard
them.’ Records and Recordings
Distinguished pianist Antony Gray is an Australian who has
based himself in London for over 30 years. He has recorded for
ABC Classics for the last 20 years. Antony’s debut recording for
ABC Classics was in the early 1990s; the piano music of Sir
Eugene Goossens which was acclaimed for his ‘diligent and
captivating pianism surpasses all competition’ and ‘technical
assurance and expressivity are hugely impressive’. The other
notable release is Malcolm Williamson’s complete music for
solo piano, on which IRR notes Antony delivers ‘excellent
performances … dispatched with considerable technical and
artistic accomplishment. I cannot recommend this issue too
strongly.’
Williamson’s piano music is uncompromising and rarely speaks
the same musical language and this J.S Bach project is no
different. J.S Bach’s works are uncompromising and here
Antony Gray has compiled excerpts from over 60 of Bach’s
works; from note for note transcriptions through to liberal
offerings where the transcriber very much adds his/her style to
Bach’s original. The diversity of transcriptions here mark Gray’s
trademark intelligence, energy and atmospheric emotion as
musician and pianist.
This is the second volume of the Paragon Ragtime
Orchestra’s series of recordings paying tribute to the
pioneering African-American composers of late
nineteenth and early twentieth century New York City.
The initial inspiration behind this effort was James
Weldon Johnson’s fascinating 1930 history book Black
Manhattan, which described the evolution of New York’s
black music and theater communities from the 1890s
through the 1920s. Through its pages, Johnson (1871–
1938) brought to life an amazing group of
achievers - musicians, writers, stage performers, and
businessmen - whose work profoundly transformed the
cultural life of this nation.
Black Manhattan Vol. 1 centered on music composed by
members of the legendary Clef Club. The present
volume ranges a bit more widely, offering music from
the theater, ballroom, and recital stage. All of the
selections heard here are performed from original
orchestrations using antique instruments; most have
never before been recorded.
The CD has already generated a lot of positive review
attention and will shortly be reviewed in Gramophone
Magazine to accompany this release.
Carus presents three fascinating works for the
Passiontide on Volume 6 of the Complete Recording
of Heinrich Schütz.
Heinrich Schütz expressed musically the central message
of the Christian thinking in the work The Seven Words of
Jesus on the cross SWV 178, so this mostly enigmatic
work is similarly in a theological and musical way
fascinating.
The mostly unknown sacred concert for four violins and
voice, Have mercy upon me, O God SWV 447 is a world
premiere recording for the Good Friday service and
represents a delightful addition to The Seven Words of
Jesus.
The St Lukas Passion SWV 480 unfolds a kind of
panorama which invites the listener to an intensive and
quiet viewing of the passion.
Performed by the talented collaboration of the Dresden
Chamber Choir under the direction of Hans Christoph
Rademann, we can enjoy the music in its most sublime
form.
Although Homilius was the long time choir master of the
Kreuzkirche, due to its destruction, the primary center
where he performed this function was at the
Frauenkirche in Dresden. With sensitive arias, unusual
orchestral sounds and expressive turba choruses
Homilius translated the traditional Passion into his time.
Fritz Näf and the Ensemble Basler Madrigalisten
recorded with his St. Mark Passion a piece that was
considered by connoisseurs, like the Prussian Princess
Anna Amalia, a particularly successful example of
modern church music.
The Kammerchor Stuttgart, under the direction of
Frieder Bernius is one of the finest choirs worldwide.
Their many prizewinning a cappella recordings have set
a standard. Now Frieder Bernius presents Beethovens
Missa in C major (op.86). With its tonal language of
subjective avowal, the first of Beethoven’s two masses
opens up new worlds of expression for the liturgical
texts of the Mass which are expressly modern and point
towards the future. Not to be considered a preliminary
work to the Missa solemnis , it is an entirely independent
work which set standards for the further development of
settings of the Mass in the 19 th century. The world
premiere recording of Luigi Cherubini's Sciant gentes
(1892) rounds off this CD.
Andreas Hammerschmidt (1611/12-1675) was one of the
most important masters of the early German Baroque.
His vocal works are known to the wider public today
through just a few pieces such as “Machet die Tore weit”.
Hammerschmidt ranks alongside the greatest
Protestant-Lutheran church music composers including
Schütz, Schein, Rosenmüller and Bach. His output
encompasses a wide range of the most varied musical
forms: sacred concertos and cantatas, motets and
instrumental pieces, and secular vocal works. This CD
with the ensemble Gli Scarlattisti presents Andreas
Hammerschmidt’s vocal compositions for Passiontide
and Easter as well as a "DixitDominus" by his
contemporary Johann Rosenmüller (1619-1684). The
vocal ensemble Gli Scarlattisti was founded in 1995 by
Jochen M. Arnold and comprises professional singers
from Germany and Switzerland.
Profano e Sacro, the new album by the young Belgian countertenor Dominique Corbiau, conveys you on a journey into
the baroque music of Italy, exploring the vocal work of composer Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725).
Presenting four overtures and twenty infinitely contrasting yet refined arias made of simple, immediately appealing
melodies, this disc is superbly performed by the sensual and mellifluous voice of Dominique Corbiau and accompanied
by the many talents of La Cetra d'Orfeo under the ever inventive and colorful baton of Michel Keustermans.
Profano e Sacro, will be for many a double discovery; that of a young singer with a growing reputation, and an exciting
introduction to a fascinating but seldom recorded repertoire.
This disc has already piqued a lot of interest across continental Europe and is currently at Number 1 in the Belgian
At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, the interest of composers for a cappella choir music seemed to be weak.
When composers like Mahler and Debussy wrote for choir, they mostly included them into orchestra works.
In the 1960’s Ligeti opened up new perspectives with his piece for choir Lux aeterna and Gottwald’s transcriptions
refer to Ligeti’s work, by applying the technique of writing for voices which gives us ultimately better understanding
of the contemporary choir music.
It is a pity that one of the most acclaimed recordings of Rosenkavalier was only recorded as
excerpts, but at over an hour, and including some of the absolute plums of scenes from the opera, it
is rightly regarded as a gem among great recordings of Strauss’s music. Included are the
Marchallin’s Act I monologue, the Presentation of the Rose, and naturally, the trio and final duet.
“impassioned and youthful sounding [Söderström] … sensuous charm exerted by singers …
superlative recording … I was nearly consumed by the burning flames of eroticism that Silvio
Peter-Jan Wagemans (1952) occupies a unique place amongst Dutch composers. Despite the fact that
he was born and educated in The Hague, his music has little in common with the ‘Haagse School’ and its
minimalist roots, even though repetition does play a role in his opera Legende.
The opera is based on the (in)famous 19th century comic book “Histoire de M. Vieux Bois” which are
known in English as “The adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck” written and drawn by the Swiss author
Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846). He intertwined comic stories about a lepidopterist (a man that catches
and studies butterflies) with stories that are very serious, tragical and at times mystical.
This recording features De Nederlandse Opera, the Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera, the Netherlands
Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and is conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw. It is a mid priced 2 CD set.
Kairos is proud to announce the release of three string quartets by renowned Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino,
recorded by the brilliant Quartetto Prometeo. The group has worked closely with the composer for years, leading
him to dedicate two pieces to it, one of which is included on this CD, the Quartetto No. 8.
The three quartets, Quartetto No. 7, Quartetto No.8, and Sei quartette brevi were written over a time span of fortyone
years, but despite this long range of time, Sciarrino’s idiosyncratic musicality is recognizable in every piece.
However, each of the three pieces included in this collection is starkly individual, an ‘interruption’ within the
‘continuity’ of Sciarrino’s oeuvre. In Quartetto No. 7, we are confronted with the composer’s attempt to transfer
techniques he developed for voice writing to strings, and in Sei quartette brevi with the enduring legacy of both
Beethoven and the post-war avant-garde. This concept of a conscious historical dialog through a personal filter is
also present in the Quartetto No.8.
Melodiya presents a recording of The Maid of Orleans, a rare opera masterpiece by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
realized by the outstanding contemporary conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky with the great Russian
singer Irina Arkhipova performing the main part.
The opera was recorded by the All-Union Radio Big Symphony Orchestra and Choir led by Rozhdestvensky
(he was an artistic director of the collective during 1961to 1974). Among other soloists, we would like to
mention two remarkable baritones – Sergei Yakovenko as Lionel and Vladimir Valaitis as Dunois.
Forming part of their recent box sets of major Russian works, this opera is presented in a 3 CD digipack.
It took Borodin nineteen years to compose this opera based on the old Russian epic poem The Tale
of Igor’s Campaign and also incorporating material from other sources. Eternally busy, the author
combined composing with a chair in chemistry and active social life and never finished the work.
Prince Igor reached us thanks to the effort of the composer’s friends Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and
Alexander Glazunov who managed to complete Borodin’s masterpiece.
English Music for Viola and piano is a disc comprised of: Arnold Bax, Sonata / Arthur Bliss, Sonata and Ralph
Vaughan Williams, Suite.
Lionel Tertis is regarded as “the father of the viola.” Although he was not its inventor, he wasthe first musician
to perform internationally as a soloist on this marvelously multifaceted instrument and to inspire leading
composers to produce music for it. While retracing his path, the viola player on this recording, Christian Euler
chanced on three English compositions by Bliss, Bax, and Vaughan Williams.
With delight, he presents these rediscoveries with the critically acclaimed pianist Paul Rivinius. The works could
not be more different and display the viola’s overwhelming potential in all its great breadth.
Verdi's baritone-roles can roughly be divided into two categories: the fathers and rulers, who are in moral
conflict between the love for their children and moral and/or political duties (Rigoletto, Amonasro, Simon
Boccanegra, Nabucco, Jacopo Foscari, Guido di Montfort or father Germont), and youthful men of honour
and/or villains, who usually turn out to be the tenor's rival (CarIo in "Forza", Renato, Carlo V, lago. Cote di Luna).
Forming part of Presier’s celebration of the 200th anniversary of Verdi, this collection is a unique and
fascinating account of the performances over the years 1904-1950.
Post World War 1, broadcasting became ever more popular and most of the music played on the
radio in those early days could be categorized as jazz or ragtime. The main element of these styles
of music was of course syncopation and in Britain, Billy Mayerl had arguably become one of the
most famous ‘syncopaters’ regularly broadcast on the radio at that time.
The distinguished Irish pianist and composer Philip Martin is the pianist introducing us here to
Volume 1 of the series of Billy Mayerl’s music from Somm Records.
Somm has established itself as a great exponent of British piano music and this series is sure to be
revered in the same light as previous releases of Bridge and Bax’s music.
Otto Olsson was one of the greatest virtuoso organists of his time. He displays a particular affinity for the
French organ, and choral and instrumental compositions were caracterised both by an interest of Gregorian
Chant, and by incursions into polytonality.
The Symphonie Romane by Widor takes its inspiration from the romanesque Basilica of St. Sernin in Toulouse
and its famed Cavaillé-Coll organ, and is based on the Gradual “Haec dies” from the Mass for Easter Sunday.
Georges Athanasiadès has been the organist titular for over sixty years in Saint-Maurice where the
remarkable organ is the perfect instrument for these symphonic masterpieces.
focuses on one poem and on one central musical idea, albeit with many variations. The final movement is
more like a suite, using three poems and moving through several different musical landscapes.
The repertoire of Tessarini is only instrumental and the sonatas are mainly in three movements, "Allegro -
(1878-1950). Henri Saguet’s ‘Le Chatte’ is one of the most important works of the late Diaghalev era.
conceived in 2005, the composer left it until 2011 when it became this work. Performed by the Aurora
Better known as principle accompanist to Rostropovich, composer Roderick Elms studied at the Royal
With this CD, dedicated to the friendship between Mozart and Haydn, we are far removed from a studio
exists between a musician and his audience. Following two of the most famous Mozart sonatas, two Haydn
sonatas in two movements combine seriousness and exuberance, apparent simplicity and studied sophistication.
Heinrich Ernst Erwin Walther (1920–1995) must not only be considered one of the pioneers of graphic scores, as the phenomenon was
far more than a passing fad in his case. Correlations between visual art and music had been a central aspect of his work from the start. He
had made his first attempts at graphic notation as early as 1938, while still a student of conducting at the Würzburg Conservatory. In 1949,
after the war and captivity, he made his debut as a pianist in Nuremberg with improvisations on drawings by Franz Xaver Fuhr. From the
mid-1950s on – continuing until his death – Walther produced what he termed “audiograms”. More than 300 of this graphic scores have
survived – and, as can be heard on the present CD, they are among the most inspiring examples of the genre. That they have remained
virtually unknown is due not least to the character of a composer who scarcely seemed interested in any more than regional renown; one
could almost say that he stubbornly obstructed the dissemination of his own works.
These two CDs show the music’s stylistic breadth that Walther was a composer who was acutely aware of contemporary idioms, but also
that he found, with a certain quirkiness and sense for hidden meanings, a path of his own which did not follow any one aesthetic tendency.
The long-time dictator of the Boston Symphony appeared at Carnegie hall in early 1942 in a series of historic concerts that breathed new
life into the moribund New York Philharmonic. TIME Magazine had nicknamed them “The Dead End Kids”, and Koussevitzky had just two
weeks to whip this recalcitrant band of notorious musical delinquents into shape. The orchestra had flourished under Toscanini, but
Barbirolli allowed performance standards to slip precipitously, and quite a few of the younger members had been called up for military
service and were replaced by new players. This new release documents this difficult period in the New York Phil’s history.
